Back in my 20s I wore very heavy hoop earrings because I wanted to look like the girlfriends of The Beatles…remember Patti Boyd and Cynthia Lennon!  I was on a business trip in New York when I first ripped through my ear lobe.  I did not want to go to an emergency clinic in Manhattan! It was eventually fixed, but did not hold long…even with light earrings.  So, this article Ouch! Read this before buying your next pair of heavy earrings is a good reminder for any age.  Yes, I walk around with a ripped earlobe and rarely wear a clip on earring.  So sad!

I laughed out loud when I saw this picture.  In college, my roomies and I would wrap bread and cheese in foil and iron it!   Worked for college, but there are better ways now.  Cold weather, grilled cheese and soup just go together like chocolate and marshmallows!!  Here is an article from Taste of Home, showing The Best Ever Grilled Cheese Sandwich!  I have to try this…with tomato soup, of course! So glad, I don’t have to iron my sandwiches now!

The older I get, the harder time changes are to cope with…even this recent one where we gained an hour.  I, for one, am on board with not messing with it.   This opinion piece Turn Back the Clock on Daylight Savings: Why Standard Time all Year Round is the Healthy Choice got my attention because I am tired! I can see where it might be a healthier choice.  Does anyone live in a state where you have thrown Daylight Saving Time out the window?  Please share your experience…or is there someone who believes we really need to do this?? Would love to hear what you think.

The final story today has no link…just a warning.  Recently, I got up to go to work…went through my morning routine…very rushed…left out the gym that day…and when I had driven about two miles, I began to pass out behind the wheel of my car.  Fortunately I was able to pull into a Walmart and call my husband.  The world was spinning and I knew I was moments away from going completely dark.  I ended up in the Emergency Room of a nearby hospital.  I suppose when you are in your 60s, they are going to check first for stroke and heart issues…which is what they did.  I just lay on the table feeling loopy for a few hours as they did almost every test (very expensive) available…including a brain scan.  It would be a couple of hours later before they finally began to pump fluids in me.  After two bags of fluids, I started to feel like myself and gain my faculties again.  That weekend had been very hot…in the upper 90s with high humidity.  I had helped my husband clean out the garage and then attended my grandchildren’s outdoor birthday party…both involved lots of sweat.  In hindsight I did not drink my usual amount of water.  Good News is…according to all those tests, I am healthy!  Bad News is….I now have lots of bills to pay because I did not drink water.  Diagnosis:  Sever Hydration.  Stay hydrated, ladies…it matters alot!

Please comment on any of the news….enjoy the slideshow (remember gift ideas through Christmas will be in the slideshows as well as fun fashion)…and always (even when you made a big mistake like not drinking water)………………………

KEEP SMILING!!!

  1. Hi Pam. So sorry to hear about your health scare. Very glad it was “only” dehydration. Here in Arizona (with no daylight savings time) I also have to remind myself to drink enough. It’s a real issue. Regarding our lack of DST, I love it! I’m from New Jersey so I appreciate the difference. Here we’re more in tune with what happens naturally. No need to fuss with it. The only challenge is keeping track of what time it is everywhere else!

  2. These are always my favorite posts of yours, Pam! You find the best stuff. Thanks for the reminder to drink water… I’m guilty of not doing that too. I have several friends who can no longer wear earrings due to wear and tear. Believe it or not, paper earrings are a thing! There are so many beautiful handmade ones that are modern, light, and durable. (I’m showcasing one such maker on my blog right now if anyone is interested in seeing an example.)

  3. Thanks,Ann! I am glad you like these posts. I love paper mache jewelry… beautiful, artistic and light weight! You are right!

  4. That dehydration issue must have been terrifying. First thought would naturally be heart attack. Thank goodness it was an easy fix. It’s worth the money spent to be assured that you are healthy, and as a reminder of how important hydration is. Your earring story is really relatable when I think back to the British fashions ushered in with the Beatles! Didn’t we all want to look like Mary Quant or, as you said, their girlfriends!? Good memories, but sad about your ear. So many times I’ve passed on some great earrings due to the weight. Not worth it! Off I go to drink my water…thank you for the reminder!!

  5. Hi Pam,
I can relate to your terrifying dehydration episode. A few years ago we went to a Colorado St football game. We live south of Denver, so it’s at least an hour and a half drive to Fort Collins. I didn’t drink any coffee or much water that morning because we didn’t want to stop. It was an 80 degree sunny September day and during the game my eyesight started to go, I was dizzy and couldn’t sit or stand. My blood pressure was dangerously low. Very scary. I spent 6 hours in the ER getting fluids, and later visited a local cardiologist. Diagnosis was dehydration. I now drink constantly and am never without my water bottle. Hydration is so important!

  6. So happy that nothing serious (other than severe dehydration, of course) turned up in your tests! My daughter has had a “black out” migraine while driving on the interstate going 70 mph! Thankfully, like you – she was able to pull over before it fully hit – but how terrifying! After many ER trips for various ailments with both my parents (both are now deceased), I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told that 9 out of 10 times when an older person comes in, they are dehydrated! So I’m with you, Pam! Trying to get at least 8 glasses (or 4 bottles in EVERY day!)

  7. Thanks for sharing, Dawn. You are right…I know exactly what you have been through. I am sitting here with my big glass of water! It goes where I go. It is scary and a great motivator to pay attention to our water intake!

  8. So glad your daughter was ok! How scary! I was joined that morning with three other people all older than I in the ER!!

  9. Drinking enough water is so important. Sorry you had the episode you had. It must have been so scary, for everyone! Remember, by the time you get thristy, you are already dehydrated. Get a headache and take an aspirin (any headache remedy) and the headache goes away? It is more likely the glass of water you took the pill with. Headache is one of the first signs of dehydration.

  10. I move so fast in the mornings, I do not think I noticed being thirsty. But I probably was. I have learned my lesson well! Thanks Freda!

  11. I really appreciate this post. I know I don’t drink enough water during the day. Gonna take care of that! Merci beaucoup!!

  12. Another two cents … I heard that by the time you fell thirsty, you are already dehydrated. For me, that means … Just. Drink. Water. Just. Because.

  13. For your health! What is so ironic is that I am known for drinking water. Just shows how one off weekend can make a difference!

  14. I know how scary your dehydration episode must have been because a similar thing happened to my husband one Sunday at church. He is notorious for not drinking enough, & that is especially important for someone with a kidney transplant. After receiving an IV at the emergency room, he was fine.
Indiana used to be on standard time all year, but about fifteen years ago, our legislators decided to change that. I have hated it ever since. I have seen more articles this week on the detriments of changing the clocks than I ever have. Perhaps the powers that be will get the message that it is bad for everyone’s health & stop the nonsense.
