News for Women of a Certain Age

Hello from my patio table in the cool autumn breezes…and, welcome to News for Women of a Certain Age where I curate news headlines for women over 50 which may be helpful or interesting.  There is so much to read these days I thought it might be helpful if I refined the field for you.  Once again, I want to begin by reminding you when I include a health related article to make sure you go over it with your doctor before making any changes….that’s right, let your doctor be your guide!  So, pour a cup of coffee or tea, grab a cozy blanket and let’s see what we can learn.

Speaking of going to the doctor, that is just one more place where many of us are becoming skeptical of writing our Social Security Number down so often and in unsecured situations.  So this article was timely for me, because I just wondered If the Doctor asks for my SSN, what are my options.  Read If A Doctor Asks for Your Social Security Number, Do This.

There are many things we can do to avoid trips to the doctors…eat right, exercise, etc….but there is one essential ingredient that INC magazine says is the most important for wellness.  Find out here, The Most Important Factor for Wellness that has nothing to do with Food, Exercise or Time Management.

This next story received a lot of media attention this week, but is actually from a summer release of results of research done by Michigan State University.  They say, “The simple act of silently talking to yourself in the third person during stressful times may help you control emotions without any additional mental effort than what you would use for first-person self-talk — the way people normally talk to themselves. ”  See the research results in Science Daily Here.

This story from AARP’s DISRUPT AGING really hit home for me because I have had so many similar experiences since turning 60+.  Whether it is shopping in a store or working a day job, there are too many moments I feel the disrespect and disdain.  Let me know what you think when you read Don’t Judge Me Because of My Age.

Results of another study find that owning a dog could perhaps help us live longer.  Any Dog Owners out there?  Do You Agree!  Find the support for this in  Owning A Dog Could Help You Live Longer (especially if you have heart disease).

Now, let’s close with a little fun!  Do you know the words which were created the year you were born.  In my year, the phrases or labels were ballpoint pen, bench press, day trader, microprogramming (makes you think I am young, right?), talent show, videotape, and …..ready for it….stiletto heels (was I born into a love of fashion?) Head over to Reader’s Digest and discover THE WORDS COINED THE YEAR YOU WERE BORN.

Please feel free to comment on all or one of these articles and let us know what you think!  We just got a new coffeemaker at our house and it is awesome, so I included it in the slideshow below along with my favorite coffee.  I have also started Christmas shopping and found some fun ideas for my five grandchildren. These are ideas…not bought too many yet.  I will share these ideas with you whenever I find them.  Hope you will be here tomorrow for an interesting new way to enjoy fun fashions and styles for special occasions. There are amazing news ideas and ways to shop now!  See you then…and until that time……………………………..

KEEP SMILING, EVERYONE!!

  1. I loved the bunny theory of hugs. It really makes a difference when you have someone who is totally negative and another who you laugh with. I always walk away feeling better and smiling after a coffee morning with upbeat friends. On another note, when I am treated invisibly in a store or looked at ‘that way’, I just leave now. I prefer to do business with people who at least have a smile for me when I enter. Also, we are having our Thanksgiving weekend and the weather is much cooler, lots of frost this morning, so feeling the fall in the air and seeing all the colour in the trees (getting out the sweaters ) makes it ideal to get out and enjoy. Great articles as usual Pamela.

  2. A great variety of articles! Apparently, rock and roll & I were born the same year, & people were dancing the cha-cha. We have known for a long time how important touch is to infants, & recently, we have found out that hugs & gentle touches are important for those with dementia. I think I will give more hugs, with permission of course.

  3. “Don’t Judge Me Because of My Age” reminds me to give grace to the ignorance of youth. I have some “looks” stashed away that have stopped the disrespect in one case I recall. Thankfully I haven’t experienced this again, but suspect one day it will be coming. I am limiting social media and won’t use Twitter, but if it works for people, good for them. The dog article makes so much sense. I am currently without pets but would love to have a dog. I’m not ready for one but do enjoy the pets of friends and family.
