How to Wear an Oversized Topper

Recently, I told you how I was going to begin wearing clothes which fit my body better and to ease up on oversized clothing going forward.  For the most part, I have been true to that, but I still have a few oversized toppers I really love.  I don’t wear this Nine West Topper to look thinner or taller…I wear it because I love it.  I own a few oversized toppers because I am attracted to the “artist-smock” appeal they have.  This is a style which really speaks to my creativity without any vibrant color.

My favorite way to wear this is with black, but it also looks great with my olive pants, pink pants, and white pants.  It is lightweight, flowy and just makes me feel like the creative, communications professional I am.  So, despite what anyone would say, I will continue to wear it.

This necklace is great.  I found it a few years ago in a local consignment shop.  I think if you go out with the intention to find statement pieces with your accessories, your eyes will be more open to those pieces when you are treasure hunting.  One of my favorite things to do is to spend an afternoon going through thrift and re-sale shops in search of a “find.”  This one was and I have loved it ever since I discovered it.

Do you have pieces you treasure and love to wear though they may not be the most flattering garments on you?  Am I just being a tad rebellious here?  What are your very favorite pieces in your wardrobe right now.  Please share!  And, of course,

KEEP SMILING!!

  1. It is such a great necklace and only cost be ten dollars! Love re-sale shops!! Thanks Jennifer.

  2. You look amazing in this outfit. You can truly see your enthusiasm. When I look at the full length shot of you, I wonder how you would look if the necklace were just a little shorter, bringing the eye up more to your beautiful smile.
Thanks so much for keeping us inspired and looking for treasure!

  3. Thanks Stormy! I love the necklace so much I am willing to keep the focus on it!

  4. I’d love to see you add a belt over the base layer in a color that coordinates with the necklace. I think that would bring the eye to your waist and de-emphasize the volume of the topper.

  5. This is perfection! The simplicity of the two solid colors is inspiring. It speaks to me.

  6. There are some items in our closets that just feel good. Is some of the topper appeal more than visual? Does it just feel cozy? Does it wrap you in luxurious softness? Keep you warm but not too warm? Accommodate anything you want to wear under it and makes you ready to take on the day? I have a soft black cardigan, nothing special but fits well, slim but not too slim, long but not too long, feels like softest cashmere but is wash and dry. I had it in my “good” clothes mindset until I realized I could just move it to everyday wear and enjoy frequent good use of it.

  7. Great observation, Sue! Yes, this does feel great… and even feels good in warmer weather!

  8. I have been having trouble getting dressed in the mornings and have fallen on two favorite pieces – a black leather jacket and a little black cardi. Now, I am not “supposed” to wear black, but, these pieces are so darn easy. I just like them.

  9. Oh my goodness! My kind of look. Love this topper. The whole look has a simple elegance to it. And I’m a great fan of wearing things because they feel good and I love them. I think it really shows up if you feel good while wearing something, you exude that when wearing it. And you look great!

  10. I think one of the reasons this looks good is that the sleeves are not too long. A lot of oversize pieces just swallow people up, but this one looks good. I agree that a hip slung belt under in a color might be good to try, and to pull the necklace up just a bit and take a look at it, not to alter it but maybe get an idea for the next resale outing! Nothing ventured, nothing gained! I love the color (which I could never wear) and the whole outfit looks great!

  11. I like the combination of black and gray very much. This topper very definitely speaks to creativity, and i think that’s a good thing! I have always liked the look of longer cardigans and this one has the advantage of the cascading front, which adds interest. Great look! To answer the question about wearing things that aren’t flattering, I have these great floral jeans that are a little too big and I wear them anyway. I usually toss them in the dryer first, but haven’t been able to part with them! My favorite things in my closet right now are all my summer clothes that I can’t wait to wear. The weather is improving so there is hope! It’s been so long since I’ve worn them, it’s like having a new wardrobe without spending any money!

  12. I agree about thrift shops and love finding treasures. That black and grey outfit is beautiful on you.

  13. Wow! You look amazing in that topper and necklace, and the whole outfit is great for you. A real keeper for you!

  14. I like the long necklace with the topper. It keeps the eye moving up and down vertically. I too have a couple of these, one in navy linen and one in coral. They were generous before and now, with weight loss, are even more so. I still wear the coral one because the color is stunning with a wide gold cuff bracelet which is one of my treasures. Every time I put it on, I wonder if it shortens me, etc. but also every time I wear it, I get a compliment on how the color looks so good. So, my question is this: why is the only or even foremost criterion for a nice outfit whether it makes us look thin? I get the idea of conventionally flattering, but can’t an outfit be flattering because the color particularly suits you, or because it speaks to your personal style, or it is just a flat out beautiful, unique garment?

  15. Beautifully said Linda. I would add that we probably look our best when we feel good in our clothes. Why do we let others tell us what we “should” wear?

  16. It’s a balance, Lily. I know relying on advice from others has really helped me…some advice I adhere to and some not so much! It helps to be confident! Then we are better at deciding what to listen to and what to discard
