A Little Bit Classic, A Little Bit Rock ‘n’ Roll

I know…the song lyric is country not classic…but I use the song to make a styling point today.   Recently, I wrote in a comment that I did not know in 20 years if I would be an Iris Apfel or a Carolina Herrera.  Later, I was thinking about it…trying to visualize me in my 80s or even 90s and thought…that’s silly, I will be both!

The reason it is silly is that my current style encompasses both.  Some days I lean toward Iris…other days, like in today’s pictures, I take more of a classic turn and lean toward Carolina.  For the past 10 years, my style story has been developed around five main adjectives…creative, strong, savvy, approachable, and classy.  I think this is where I have become the classic/rock n roll woman.  My choice of the word creative gives me the license to style classic my way.

The local marketing director of Neiman Marcus is an inspirational woman, Xitlalt Herrera Salazar.  I am always inspired by Xitlalt’s style, because I believe she takes my five adjectives to the next level.  I think she communicates the same messages I am going for…just styled off the charts.  I always pay attention to how she looks.

In the top picture today, I am wearing smaller accessories gifted to me by my husband.  Some days, the smaller, delicate pieces are me.  But other days, the loud and large statement pieces are me.  I just want you to see that both people can exist in the same style of one.  I learned a long time ago when I remain true to my five style messages, then I develop my own style and I am very happy in that place.

It is important for me to leave the Iris Apfel- rock n roll woman in my style story as I go forward so that I keep having fun with who I am every day.  Now, I have thoroughly confused you…or does this make sense?  I hope it does.  As we go forward, let’s enjoy life on many levels and in different ways.  For some of us that will be our personal style. The slide show below is fun accessories (all on sale) …for gifts or you!

KEEP SMILING!!

  1. I can certainly see why you pay attention to Xitlalt’s style. My goodness but she’s classy! It does make sense to me how you can combine two completely different looks and still be yourself. A lot depends on mood or occasion. It’s a good thing to be able to toggle between two completely different vibes and come out as you. You’ve shown here how that’s done. I do love that jacket and V-neck top together in the first picture! I’ll be reviewing my Foundational Five in the near future as I transition into retirement, or semi-retirement. I can see things changing up a little from all my years spent in more uptight office wear! (BTW, I like that song!)

  2. Xitlalt is certainly beautiful and classy, and so are you, Pam! Her name looks “Mayan’ and I would love it if you gave clues as to how this unique name is pronounced: I presume that the “X” is pronounced as “Z” such as in ‘xerox’. But how to pronounce the remainder, all put together, is an intriguing mystery!

  3. Hi Pam, next birthday I will be 80 ! Where did the years go ? I always wore classic styles and continue to do so. I have upped the accessories, the boots and purses. Since retiring 20 years ago more casual outfits have appeared in my wardrobe. And I am continually impressed by the choices of other bloggers. You look great in this photo!! Love your comments and fashion tips.

  4. It is great to be versatile with our style choices. Some days the agenda calls for a classic look. Other days, a more fun look is just right. Many of the pieces in your wardrobe work well for both.

  5. Classic and rock and roll definitely describes me. I hope when I retire from my corporate role I can lean more to the rock and roll/funky side. That’s what I want to be when I grow up!

  6. Am I the only one not able to pull up the items you show in your slideshow.,,interested in so many of the items and so disappointed I can not click on and see where to go for information on each.

You look great in the first picture. Love the blazer.

  7. Hi Esther, I am not sure what the problem is, but I just checked the slide show and it goes to each page of each item. So the problem might be on your end. Sorry about that, but it seems to be working fine.
