Hit Your Style Sweet Spot When Not Feeling Well

Welcome to a new collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us…the grandmothers, the professionals, the retirees, the volunteers… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be and we hope to encourage you with specific, step-by-step guidelines right here every Sunday.  We would like to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence!
Each Sunday, we will bring to you a scenario we face each week and show you our step-by-step process as we decide what to wear…you will see on our individual blogs how we handle the challenge and seek our personal sweet spot for the day!

This was a reader request a few weeks ago…”please address how to look nice when you don’t feel well.”  It really hit home with Jennifer and I, because we are both dealing with some health issues.  I will send you over to her site below for her story, but I have already written how I face some surgery next Friday with up to a two week recovery.

No worries, everyone, I am not going to tell you that we must dress up in our finest clothing, even when we don’t feel it.

But, I will say, that I know from experience it is important to have days you do fix hair and makeup ….because, mentally, it will help you feel better.

There is just something therapeutic about taking some time to look our best. It can provide hope of things to come.

MY OLD THINKING:  I formerly did not care at all what I looked like if sick or tired at home.  I had an old, oversized WALMART shirt I loved…my family hated it.  And I literally wore it to death…but upon requests from husband and children, I finally got the courage last year to toss it in a trash can.

MY NEW THINKING:  It really is easy to relax and look nice at the same time.  Places like SOFT SURROUNDINGS provide us so many beautiful fabrics and options to wear while in recovery or relaxing.  I now have about three older pair of leggings…which are in good shape that I only wear around the house…and they are so comfy with a  FLEECE TOP like this one from Soft Surroundings, this exact top is sold out,… but there are others availabe in the same soft fabrics.   I also, love, love, love my FAUX FUR THROW from Soft Surroundings…best Christmas gift!

If I take the time to wear something I feel comfortable and good wearing, then it will not be embarrassing if a friend stops by and again…

I think it helps us to recover and feel better when we take a little time…

I have promised my family to put more thought into this and to be more purposeful when shopping comfort wear….even at a place like Walmart.

Of course, there are BEAUTIFUL GOWNS AND ROBES around…worth the investment to look your best if you are down and out for a time…and some are just stunning.  If I were to have an extended time of illness, I would want to add a couple of these to my wardrobe.  Also, for the best comfort in bed, get some of the BAMBOO SHEETS…I do own a set and they are amazing.

I hope everyone is feeling well, but it is always good to have some R & R at home during colder winter months!

  1. I know there are times when we can be too sick to even sit up, but for what you address here, I agree that putting on some makeup and fixing our hair goes a long way toward helping our outlook. Love the leggings and comfy top! I have some lounge wear that I often employ after a tough day at work. Relaxing is important for recovery!

  2. I know there are many levels of sick…and I my heart goes out to those who are bound to bed. I hope this helps the others in recovery. Thanks so much Karen!

  3. Lounge wear!. As soon as I have closed my front door, off come the clothes I wear to make myself feel good when I'm out, and into my comfy's to relax in. In good health or not, nothing beats curling up on the sofa in something comfortable. I often write my blog this way and smile to myself, if my readers could see me now!
Happy New year to you Pam

  4. I just had to up my comfort game, Laurie! My family hated that old shirt so much, but once I find some comfort clothes I liked, it was easy to toss it out! Have a great week…thanks for stopping by!

  5. Well, as I told Jennifer. I've failed miserable. I've been sick with fever and bronchitis for 10 days. In that time I never got out of my bathrobe ( clean) or my cute PJ's never put on makeup. Obviously I need to up my game. I looked at Soft Surroundings but did not see your sweatshirt so went over to Orvis and bought another one. I didn't see anyone while I was sick. No one wanted to see me with all my germs! Thank goodness. I'll try to do better in the future. I mean at least eyebrows and a touch of lipstick. But I don't know I was pretty sick.

  6. Wow Pam, we like the same things when resting up, recovering from illness or just watching a movie in the evening at home. That throw is incredible by the way…is it on sale?

Happy New Years and all the best in 2016!

  7. Good luck with your surgery, Pam! I have had to step up in my "at home" clothes too – why should my husband not see me looking nice, even when I want comfort clothes?

Happy New Year as well to you, my dear! Here's to another year of blogging!

  8. You know Sandra…there are just times when we feel awful and it is okay. After my surgery Friday I am anticipating four to five days when I do not do much of anything, but I hope shortly after I can at least fix my hair and put on some lipstick. Believe me, I understand! I mentioned in the post that particular shirt was sold out, so I am glad you found another. It is a fun way to be comfy!

  9. This is the most amazing blanket EVER!! My husband finally tried it and now he keeps trying to steal it! So soft and warm. It will be my best friend the next couple of weeks.

  10. I finally got the message though it was a little late! I won't wear the torn, oversized despicable shirt again! I hope you have a joyful and successful New Year also, Shelia!

  11. I totally agree with you about feeling better if you look nice Pam. We don't have to go all out, but something that we wouldn't be embarrassed to open the front door in is probably a good start. I hope your recovery time goes well and you're back up to speed in no time! and thanks for sharing at our #OverTheMoon link #4 ~ Leanne

  12. Hi! Glad to discover your blog! I haven't been sick the whole time (16 months!) we've lived in our new house, but I would be so embarrassed if any of my neighbors saw me in my jammies! I need to get something cute! Stat! I also love a fuzzy faux fur blanket, and so do my cats!

  13. Love your name…a warm hello! I am so glad I have nice comfort wear now…wish I had not taken so long! Thank you for commenting and hope you will be back! Happy New Year!

  14. I hope it could encourage others, Alicia…like you do. You always look so nice with a wonderful smile. Thanks for stopping by and have a great start to 2016.

  15. This is really good advice! I confess, though, that I save my actual clothes for when I am going to leave the house. At home, I wear robes or loungewear. Though I did invest in some that I knew would look good and feel good. And you are SO right! When you don't feel well, or are tired, it can be comforting to know you look good in spite of it all. 🙂

  16. You will love it, JJ if you call its name back! One of my favorite all time gifts. And thanks for sending the request…it obviously resonated with a lot of women.

  17. I agree So very much. After BOTH my c-sections I was bedridden for days. but so many people stopped in to check on me and see the babies, so I had to be somewhat dresed and feelign like myself. The days I took a few moments to get comfortably coordinated I felt SO much BETTER! Love the slippers.

  18. Great tips. I finally bought myself some nice pajama sets after wearing my husbands old t shirt to bed for the past few years. I feel so put together just going to bed. It is amazing how it makes you feel!

  19. I agree, I replaced my old bathrobe for a more feminine, elegant one as well. My husband has to look at it all the time on Sunday morning. Might as well look good.

  20. Pam, I'm so sorry you aren't feeling well. I certainly know exactly what you mean about wearing the same old raggedy clothes around the house. I am guilty as well. I have a totally different day if I don't fix myself up a bit. I certainly am not as productive! Nothing more than I love than to be cozy. I also love your muk luk slippers!! Thank you for linking up with SHOE AND TELL.
