Soft Surroundings and French Country Home Decor

Deep in the heart of San Antonio, Texas, I have decorated my own little French Country home.  My love of this aesthetic is one of the reasons I swooned over the Soft Surroundings stores when I first walked into one...I thought, "I want to live here!"  The design, decor and aroma really resonated with me....not to mention all of the beautiful clothes. So, I was pleased to learn they also sell their beautiful home decorations online.

Since my home always seems to be a work in progress, I love to add new special pieces like this beautiful lamp from Soft Surroundings.  It fits into my decoration family perfectly and is so pretty.

If you love French Country like I do, then check out some of the offerings below and you can find even more online.  The home department is as much fun as the fashion and beauty departments.  Three of the reasons they are growing while other retailers are closing.

Enjoy your home!  I certainly do mine!

Keep Smiling!

Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: What is Age Appropriate Fashion Over 50?

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence

Today's topic is a hot button.  Everyone has an opinion...some believe anything goes...all clothing is appropriate for all ages...some believe the opposite direction and tend to dress frumpy because they are trying to accept their older age and kind of believe the fun is over.  So, Jennifer and I decided to ask...do you every consider age appropriateness when shopping for clothes?
This might surprise you....but I don't consider age appropriateness when I shop.  I rarely ask myself is this alright  for a 63 year old woman.  What I have written about often is that I selected five messages I want my clothing to say about me years ago.  I want to communicate that I am strong, intelligent, creative, youthful, and confident.   Youthful is my way of saying that I want my clothing to be current...not dated or stodgy.  So, when I am shopping I look in the mirror and ask myself if what I am wearing communicates those adjectives.
The casual outfit I am wearing today (yes! this is a favorite tunic right now) does communicate all of that to me. These wonderful sandals sent to me are current,  creative and fun. And sooooooo comfortable!  I also believe very appropriate for many ages.

Now,  sometimes a youthful trend can make us actually appear older...if it is not a great fit for our bodies or our lifestyle.  Most often when something does not work it is about the fit of the garment and fitting who we are as far as personality goes.  If I want people who approach me to believe I am strong and intelligent before I say a word, then there are many garments I am not going to wear.

My Alamo necklace is my touch of creativity today...and also says this girl is from San Antonio, Texas!

You don't have to worry about your age...only determine what you want to say with your clothing.  Then when you hit that messaging you know you have what is right for you.  My last message is confidence and I dress it with a smile...when I know I am on target.

The sandals are a teaser!  You will have to come back to my blog this week to see who they are from...but I promise to tell you!  I really like the comfort fit...and yes, youthful aesthetic.

If you would like my free document (8 Steps to Reinvented Style) where I discuss messaging, please email me at over50feeling40@gmail.com.

Now, go see what JENNIFER AT A WELL STYLED LIFE is saying and tell me below...what do you think about dressing age appropriate??

Fashion Over 50: What Women Wore and A Question for You!

Friday night was a special awards event to honor the entrepreneur spirit of businesswomen and future businesswomen in San Antonio. As editor of our magazine, I was asked to hand out the Inspiration Award...which is perfect since INSPIRATION is my personal focus word for 2017.
I wore a simple black dress with an Eileen Fisher jacket over it which had a little bit of shine to it. I had
planned to wear a fancier navy blue dress, but the sheer blue hose I ordered have not arrived yet.  Poor planning on my part!
I thought you might enjoy seeing what some of the other ladies wore.  I always like to look around and see how women dress for a fancier event!

It was a lovely evening.  Now here is a question for you...

Hose seem to be making a comeback! I saw many wearing them last night.  However, they are almost impossible to find in a store front now.

So, I ask...do you wear them with your dresses or are they gone from your life?

Happy Saturday!

4 Favorite Looks So Far In 2017 for Fashion Over 50

Hard to believe it is about to be April!  Seems like New Year's was just yesterday.  As we changed to a new season, I decided to reflect on  four of my favorite looks so far in 2017 for this woman over 50!
Yes, I am having fun with this red wall...it has always been there but I never saw it as a photography background until this year.  So, far it backs up two of my favorite looks.
I am always sad to put away my faux leather leggings...but it gives me something to look forward to next year.
It's been a fun beginning to 2017.  I hope you will join me as we go forward...so much to talk about and so little time.  I hope you are enjoying this year as much as I am.

As always, thanks for reading, commenting and being here!

Happy Friday!

A New Ralph Lauren Jacket...from a Treasure Hunt!

I have been reporting results of my treasure hunts at GOODWILL SA for a little over three years now.  Some of my favorite finds are when I discover a high end garment which is brand new with tags still on it.

This is a new Ralph Lauren jacket I uncovered recently and though it is just a tad large, it really is a great piece for me for only $5.99!

I suppose my biggest pieces of advice are to stop by a GOODWILL SA location often; and do it when you have some time to shop.  You never know what you will find!  Here are a few other treasures I saw recently....

San Antonio is lucky to have such a great GOODWILL organization which gives a lot back to our community.  As I like to say...so many treasurers, so little time.

SHOP LC (Low Cost) is similar to QVC…only predominantly for jewelry and is known as a low cost modern day shopping option.  Plus, I was pleased to discover their household items and home goods, which would make perfect gifts for showers, house warming, or Mother’s Day.  Let me tell you a secret which I do not want my children to know, I love this fabulous 25 Piece Stainless Steel Kitchen Set…so many great pieces which will replace very used items and some which have been “borrowed” by adult children.

I think we should get another shower for our 30th wedding anniversary anyway!  Am I right??

But as I said, Shop LC is really known for jewelry...and they have many lovely pieces which will bring joy from quality pieces at affordable prices. Next time you need a gift or would like to treat yourself, go check them out.

Just A Touch of Color Goes A Long Way

Last weekend, we opened one of the back doors to discover several roses had bloomed.  Both my husband and I gasped at the surprise and enjoyed the beauty of each one against a back drop of a backyard transitioning into spring.  Just this little bit of color went a long way in bringing us pleasure that morning.

Clothing is the same way.  I often wear a neutral outfit and just pop it with one touch of color such as this purple jacket.  Because of the crops, I might wear this for my casual attire such as meeting a friend for lunch or even running errands o shopping.
Even the accessories add some pattern and shine to this simple look.  These ballet flats are from the TOTAL MOTION COMFORT LINE BY ROCKPORT.

I found the clutch in a clearance sale at a local small boutique.  It is a fun piece to wear out and always gets noticed by someone.  Color, pattern, texture, shine and fit ...always are components of a successful look...whether casual or work wear!

6 Spring Shopping Tips for Wardrobes over 50

Yes, it is the first official day of spring!  This often brings on the desire to shop for some bright and beautiful spring clothes...so I thought I would give you a few spring shopping tips for women over 50 before you hit the stores.
I am going to continue my search for skirts and dresses which will help cool me off in our humid warm weather...which leads to our first tip....

1. Have a game plan when you shop!  What are the needs in your current wardrobe?  Where are the gaps you would like to fill? Would you like to participate in a current trend?  Have some idea of your goal.
2. Do not shop on the run.  Allow time for shopping.  For me, fast decisions usually result in returns to the store.
3. Remember...clothing sizes and designs are not standard.  You must try garments on to see how they fit and if they communicate what you desire to say with your clothing.  If it doesn't fit, don't immediately plunge into a self loathing pity party.  It is not about something being wrong with you...it is about the garment.  It simply does not fit you...be frustrated with the designer or brand...but move on to another garment and DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP.
4.  There are lots of clothes out there...you will find something which fits you...at your age and body shape you currently are.  Do not give up...consider this a challenge and choose to enjoy the process.  Only buy what makes you say, " Oh Yeah, This Is It"
5.  The three way mirror is your best friend...if you need to step out of the dressing room to see all sides of the garment, then do it...you need to see yourself coming and going.
6.  Finally, most major retailers place coupons online.  Before you leave the house, make sure you are armed with coupons for more savings while you shop!  Every little bit counts!
Now, go have some fun with spring shopping!  Also, make a list of the messaging you are looking for in your clothing...what do you want to say about you?

Do not buy anything which does not bring you confidence and joy!

Happy Spring!

Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: Chic Over 60...Leave Frumpy Behind!

Are we still worthy of the runway after age 60?  You bet we are! When I hit the big 6-0 three years ago, friends immediately asked, “Are you going to change the name of your blog?”  Well, no, I am still over 50 and still feeling great…no need to change.  The messaging is the same.
What Jennifer and I have witnessed is many believe there is a difference in the way women in their fifties and sixties dress.  Somehow, when we hit 60 the norm says we are suddenly expected to dress “old lady” or like a “grandma.”  I always cringe when frumpy clothing is called grandma clothing….I respect grandmothers more than that!

Well, I am in my sixties and very much a grandmother, and there is no frumpy here! I have worked hard through my reinvention to throw the frumpy out.  I want to be the strong, intelligent, chic woman who enters the room…and not the frumpy sad one.

Recently I discovered the old WHAT NOT TO WEAR episodes are on at the same time I am on the treadmill three mornings a week.  After this discovery, I told you I would re-visit some of those important guidelines.  Last week, a graphic designer who was tagged with bad fashion wrote a content strategy for her makeover, which said this,

“I want to end this journey (a week with the show) with a cross seasonal wardrobe which communicates strength and professionalism with a spirit of fun.”

I loved it!  Since I am very much in the professional world and also love to show some fun in my style, this was a great content strategy for my own wardrobe!  I also live in a warm climate where we use very few cold weather clothes, so a cross seasonal wardrobe just makes good financial sense.  Making sure my clothing sends the messages I desire, means I will walk in confidence and leave frumpy behind.

One of my wardrobe goals has been to add more dresses and skirts for the warmer weather.  All signs look for this to be a very humid spring and summer, so I need ways to stay cool and chic.  For work, I lean toward classic styling with fun accessories.  This sheath dress is a great find at Dressbarn and I have it featured below.  I really like black and blue together...très chic!

I am 63…not old…not dead…not out of the game…but feeling confident and joyful... and still walking my own runway every day!

Now, let’s go see what my over 60 friend, JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE, has to say on the topic

Then, Go Out With A Smile!
