A Must Shopping Event in San Antonio

These are my new slingback, gold, peep-toe sandals...a brand carried by a top retailer...which still bore the new purchase tags when I discovered them recently at one of our GoodwillSA locations!
San Antonio does have simply the best Goodwill shops around and tomorrow, February 25 is a day you do not want to miss....drive in, catch a plane, call Uber, be here... The 93rd ANNUAL RUMMAGE AROUND SHOPPING EVENT where GoodwillSA partners with the Junior League of San Antonio to offer amazing items at 25% off in all departments in 10 locations.

My New Style-the-Jacket Experiment

When I attended the recent Spring Trend fashion show, I noticed the majority of styles included a jacket just over the shoulders ...you can see other pictures HERE.  In fact, the Marketing Director from Neiman Marcus who moderated the evening also wore her jacket on the shoulders.  A couple of days later, I received my new catalog in the mail from Chicos and it looked like this...
So, I get it, perhaps this is more of a styling trend this year. Now, I know this styling is nothing new, but to see so much of it at once, intrigued me. I have always believed a jacket worn this way communicates confidence, power, and strength.  It seemed a good fit for my current job, but I still wasn't sure if it made sense for my busy life...so I conducted an experiment of wearing the style several days in a row.  I started with the looks you saw HERE on Sunday.... and followed two more days....

Here is what I learned:

1. With my body type, it is difficult to do this and not appear larger.  My chest looks larger and it widens my shoulders.  Perhaps if I was smaller it would look better on me.
2.  At least two of the jackets kept falling off when I would move from my desk.  The last one, a heavier fabric, stayed on the best.
3.  I feel more confident and powerful actually wearing the jacket rather than placing it back over the shoulders.
4.  It might be a good idea once a month with the right jacket.

Are you a fan of wearing your jacket this way...would you share why or why not?  Are you more likely to try it if you see it styled often in Spring Fashion media?

Please share your thoughts about this as a styling technique....

Keep Smiling Everyone!

A Must Investmentt for Spring Fashion Look Over 50

As soon as the warmer weather surfaces in your part of the world. consider a lengthy manicure and pedicure to refresh hands and feet.  It is perhaps one of the best decisions you can make for your spring wardrobe.  When I say lengthy, I mean it should include paraffin wax treatments and lots of massage!
This past weekend I decided to take a break from color and go with a traditional French manicure...there is something clean and refreshing about it.  I make sure to eat healthy and take my supplements to keep my nails shiny and strong.
With mules and sandals, it is a must to go for regular pedicures.  Honestly, this is a relaxing treat I give myself twice a month.  It is an investment I make in my state of mind.

If you have gone the winter with hands in gloves, and feet in boots with no visit to a salon...consider a visit first before you buy new clothes and accessories.

You will be glad you did!  What color are you looking forward to wearing on your nails this spring??

Keep Smiling, everyone!

Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: Why Investment Shoes for Women Over 50

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence

Last week, Jennifer and I began a conversation about investment dressing for women over 50 and this is a continuation.   When I went to the Spring Trend fashion show this past week, the mules really stood out to me.  There were amazing Gucci designs, but that is an investment I am just not in a position to make.

I do believe quality shoes are important.  When my feet are happy, I am happy….so I am open to investing $100- $200 in good shoes…but I can only think of one time in my life I went beyond that.  Do I regret it now?  I really do…but they were gorgeous stilettos and I was in my early thirties and looking to make a statement. However, I do believe the mules are a statement I can currently get into and keep in my wardrobe.  They do fit my lifestyle now.

After the fashion show, I immediately went online looking for modern mules with prices I can live with…and I found them in brands I trust.
For me to invest in a pair of shoes, I am seeking a good fit, comfort, structure, design, and looking to see if they go with more than one outfit.  My husband liked this pair of Shelby Snakeskin Mules from Nordstrom, but I could not locate them to give a link...they may have sold out..they are very cool! So I have a similar mule for your consideration below.
I live in a very warm climate and I like the fact that a mule looks a bit more professional than a sandal, but still allows those cool breezes in on the feet.  Also, I like to send messages of creativity with my style and what better way is there than for my feet to do the talking!
Now, these Sam Edelman floral Mules are linked with the selections below and I LOVE THEM so much!
There are so many looks I can create with both of these pair of shoes. Though I would love to own a pair of Gucci's, these give me the style I was looking for; a little update with a trend; and comfort in brands I trust which I know will withstand time. It is worth it to me to make an investment in my shoes.  What about you?
(Note:I have the jackets on my shoulders for a reason...will explain later in the week.)

Now, let's go see what JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE is discussing today!

5 Reasons Column Dressing Works for Fashion Over 50

I know it’s obvious I believe in column dressing.  For those who may not know, column dressing is taking one solid neutral base and styling on top of it.   I am often seen in a black or brown column…and occasionally a white one….same color top and same color bottom.

The benefits for me are these:
1.        Column dressing is slimming.  It tricks the eye to believe you are a long, tall, cool glass of water!
2.       It is simple.  Great wardrobe basics are smart and worth investing in.
3.       It is easy.  On those morning I am tired …it always works.  The simplest outfit can easily become a work of art.
4.       It is economical.
5.       It builds confidence.

Often when I dress with columns, my outfits include fun accessories…this one combined a little shine and pattern…another one of those basic rules from the old What Not to Wear!

What do you think of column dressing?  Have you found it works for you?

Have a fabulous Friday!!

Fashion Group International San Antonio Spring Trend Event

San Antonio has an active, fun chapter of the Fashion Group International (FGI) and I am honored to be a member.  We recently gathered at NEIMAN MARCUS in the THE SHOPS OF LA CANTERA to celebrate Spring Trends and I thought you might enjoy a few of my favorite images from the show and the attendees!

This precious woman in the hat is one of the original founders of the national FGI.

It was a wonderful evening and I will talk more about a particular trend this Sunday on Hit Your Style Sweet Spot.  As I have said before, going to a fashion show is the same as going to an art museum for me...both are creative expressions of talented artists!

Do you ever have the opportunity to attend fashion shows?

Thanks for stopping by......

Home Decor on a Budget: Start Small to Ignite Inspiration

I remember how overwhelmed I was when we first moved into our home years ago. It took a friend to stop by and give me vision to get started...she just jumped in and said, "Begin in the kitchen.  Just focus on it and nothing else...then the rest will happen."

I took her advice with me as we traveled to see our daughter and her family in a new home.  With two small children, she was overwhelmed.  Toddlers were the first challenge.  Followed by little money and little vision. Also, an older, unique floorplan in a home with great potential. So, I looked for an area where we could begin small and found it in this little breakfast nook just outside of their kitchen.

Recently, I noticed on Pinterest a trend to place coffee bars inside of residences.  I found many cute pictures like the first one in this post.  Her kitchen is also very small with limited counter space and they love coffee so much, they own a really nice coffee machine. So, I suggested making this a coffee area and they loved the idea...so, off to shop we went and here are the results.
We found the clock first at Homegoods and my daughter loved it!  Next, Hobby Lobby was having a huge sale, so we found the shelving, the metal basket on the table, and the wall art there.  It provided the "industrial-coffee-shop" style we were going for.  We placed this small, burlap tablecloth on the table and then supplemented with their pieces and a family picture which happened to be framed in a similar style.  Future purchase will be a cool light over the table of similar style.

Just taking on this one tiny area was the catalyst for a weekend of inspiration and they were able to decorate their front room and children's room!  Sometimes a small change leads to bigger ones.  It is that way with a personal style makeover as well!

Are you familiar with this new idea of having a mini-coffee shop in your house?  I love the idea....and it works for their lifestyle right now.

What room do you like to begin with when decorating a new place?

Thanks for stopping by...and...as always...

Road Trip! What I Wore and What I Saw!

I am born and raised in Texas, so most road trips within the state can go for up to 13 hours one way!  We decided to take a 6 hour journey this past weekend (12 hour round trip) and make a delivery to my daughter's family!
Sitting for that long requires comfort, so this weekend I chose a black Eileen Fisher long sleeved tunic under a maroon FOXCROFT TEXTURED PONCHO (ON SALE NOW).  My denim crops are Soft Surroundings Metro Legging Crops...one of the best fits around. (See Below for links to the tunic and crops)
Of course, when driving the back roads of Texas, one has to experience different barbecue places coming and going!

While the meals are really good, my favorite was the amazing
peach cobbler....

Now, I must work it off this week...but it was worth every bite!  Tomorrow, I will show you a little home improvement I did with my daughter while I was there!

Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!

Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: A DIscussion About Investment Dressing Over 50

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence

Jennifer and I have decided to spend a couple of weeks discussing how we approach investment dressing.  For my purposes, I would define investment dressing as a few pieces of clothing purchases which are high quality, great fit, and unique design.  They are worth paying the price.  Tim Gunn says your basic pieces should be investments in “quality, taste and style.”  The pieces are NOT fast fashion, but endure time.
However, I remember a time in my life when a $50 purchase was an investment!  We all have our different price points and budgets.  So an investment piece for you, may be way out of my league…and vice versa.
Since I went through my reinvention at age 50, I have learned over the years the designers I like and how to find them on my budget.  I have an Eileen Fisher section of my closet, however, each piece was found at a discount or special price.  The coat I am wearing today is EF from Dillards.  It was worth it to me to invest in this coat…here are the reasons:
1.       It is lightweight and I will wear it all year.
2.       It looks great with pants, leggings, skirts or dresses.
3.       It says chic, strong, intelligent, and depending on the accessories, can say fun!
4.       The design of the jacket is very flattering.  The back is designed with a deep pleat.
5.       I will have it as long as I want it, and, if I desire to ever sell it, it will have value and return a nice price.  I will wear it often which drives down the cost per wear.
6.       When I wear it, my confidence is high.  I do not even once have concern about my outfit being appropriate for the event.  I navigate where I am with a completely confident smile.

I paid full price at an EF event, but received a discount on another EF garment because I purchased the coat.  I rarely purchase an investment garment without savings happening somewhere.  I still work fulltime and attend many events, so coats like this one are important to me.   I must be confident when I go out to represent the magazines or my own brand.
Now, the leggings are by Joan Vaas, a designer found at Neiman Marcus.  However, I bought these at Marshalls for $18 several years ago and I wear them often!  The quality, fit and design are perfect and because of this pair, I have purchased a few more Joan Vaas pieces.   There really is a difference in the fit of many investment brands over lower price point garments.   Marshalls and TJ Maxx are perfect places to find investment clothing for less.

I love the way I feel in special pieces and have made the decision, for me, occasionally I will add a special piece.  How about you?  What is your favorite investment piece in your wardrobe?  Does it have a story you can share?  Please do…then go see what JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE is saying today about investment dressing!

Thanks for being here!
