NorthStyle for Fashion Over 50

I am pleased to introduce you to another online retailer with some excellent designs for women over 50...NORTHSTYLE.  I love good jackets and the HERRINGBONE JACKET above has won me over!

This jacket has high quality fabric and seams sewn in all the right places for the best, most flattering, fit.  The call it the fit and flare...which flares just enough. I have tried on this style before and the flare was too much and made me look larger...but NOT with this one.

I also like the velvet buttons and cuffs. For me this longer length is perfect since I am tall.

I can wear a jacket like this over a skirt or even a dress with tall boots; and with my jeans.  I am pleased to add it to my wardrobe.  But, there are several NorthStyle Jacket I would love to own....I counted eight, but here are my top favorites! Just click on the pictures to go to the information and prices.

I hope you have enjoyed learning about NorthStyle...I am very impressed with the jackets and like what I see!  For my jacket, just click on this link,  NORTHSTYLE HERRINGBONE JACKET

Happy Tuesday!

What Does Your Clothing Say About You After Age 50?

I am sure most of you read this statement and affirmed YES...I just want to be me with my clothing.  But in the beginning of my style reinvention at age 50, it was statements like this which threw me off.

We have been reminiscing about What Not to Wear all week, and I promised to go back to some of the basics from the show which really helped me.  After I began to watch, I also began to read...books about style, fashion, and confidence.  A few books said...be the best YOU you can be.  However, at that time of my life, I did not understand who I was...I had lost me in my 40s.  The stylish, young, flamboyant marketing professional had disappeared.
Statements like the one above hit me cold.  I needed to figure out who I was at age 50 right then.

Stacy London and a few others kept asking what do you want your clothing to say about you.  This is when I began to understand my outfits every day sent a message about me...and I could control the messages.

This journey to change my look, became a journey to transform my attitude about me and about life.  I wrote in journals positive lists about myself and lists to fine tune the messages I wanted my clothing to say about me.  I listened intently to advice of how to dress my body for the way it looks today, and to stop saying, "I will dress nice when......"
I knew these things:  I am intelligent; I am strong: I am creative; I am friendly and approachable; I am passionate about the work I love and I am youthful...these became the messages I desired to capture in my style.  I learned to look closely at colors which made me smile and enhanced my own coloring when I wore them.  I looked at clothing designs which were slimming and learned techniques for body confidence.  I also moved ME to the top of the priority list and represented the phrase I MATTER with my decisions.  As all this happened, confidence and joy grew.
Now, that I am laughing and smiling on my insides, my closet is in sync with how I feel.   When you learn these lessons, it takes more time in a dressing room to ask critical questions.  However, it is worth it to wonder WHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT ME?

Do you know how to dress when a book or stylist says, JUST BE YOU, or does it leave you cold as it did me in the beginning?  Please share your thoughts....

Have a wonderful Saturday!

The Myth About Comfortable Clothes

The line I think Stacy and Clinton heard most often was, "I only wear comfortable clothes."  There is some myth out there which says nice clothing is not comfortable.  I have learned that is simply not true.

I dress comfortably and confidently every day...and have for years.
So, I pulled some beautiful garments for you to consider which look very comfortable and stylish!  Comfort does not have to look bad.

Do you agree ...nicer clothes can be comfortable!?  Chime in below!

Now, I often end this post with a call to KEEP SMILING...as we smile this week, let's remember the beautiful smile of Mary Tyler Moore who inspired many of us! When I left college, I wanted to be Mary Richards!  She will be missed.

Thank You!

On the Subject of Style Over 50....

Since we are on the subject of What Not to Wear, I first introduced Stacy London's book to you in 2012.  I have referenced it several times since then...it is as much a psychology book as it is a style book...and still the best I have read on the subject.

Here is just a sampling of my favorite quotes:
Style doesn’t start with your body – it starts with your brain.
By changing your style, you’re forced to change the way you perceive yourself.
It’s everyone’s right to feel good regardless of age, size, and budget.
You limit your options every time you do not try your best
CELEBRATE EVERY DAY THE PERSON YOU ARE AND         GARNER THE LEVEL OF RESPECT YOU DESERVE.
When we allow others to control how we feel about ourselves, we give up an essential sense of power.
The goal should always be to look good for your age, not to look as if you are chasing your youth.  Nothing screams “out of touch with reality” more than trying to look twenty years younger than you are.
After 40, you hit the new A.G.E.: Attractiveness, Generosity, Experience
It takes the same amount of time to put on good clothes as bad clothes
Perfection is the enemy of style.  It’s actually the enemy of all of life experiences.  If you don’t try, you don’t fail – but you don’t succeed either.

If you need some inspiration and encouragement before spring, I highly recommend this read! Just click on the Amazon image below
Do you like the sound of any of these quotes?

                                     Have a wonderful Weds!

Fashion Over 50: Discussing My Comfort Zone

I miss WHAT NOT TO WEAR...I did not realize how much until I was on a treadmill recently and the woman in front of me was watching an episode while she ran.  My TV wasn't working and I practically fell off the track attempting to watch her monitor!  I started to watch Stacy & Clinton when I realized I needed help several years ago.

It was tough at first. I believed every episode was about me!  But eventually I began to apply what I learned and it helped me to make the changes I desired.  They gave me courage to try some things outside of my comfort zone; yet, keep it under control.
I realize the shows offended some and there are many who did not like the style of communication...but I was one of those who needed a slap in the face....a wake up call!  They helped me to discover me again...and it has been such fun.

Before I watched their show, I never would have tried these snake print leggings.  But, I am so glad I did...I really like them.  Nor would I have worn two necklaces at once...this is a fun way to mix things up a bit.
They were my first fashion trainers and I will always be grateful.  I think what I would like to do this month and into next is occasionally share with you what I learned and still practice today.

There is so much fashion hyperbole out there...I want to go back to what helps real women, off the runways, and in their every day lives.  A few specific tips can help increase confidence and joy.  I know it did for me.

Did anyone else watch WHAT NOT TO WEAR?  If so, what lesson did you practice most often?

Today's outfit includes:

Snake print leggings from SOFT SURROUNDINGS

Tunic recently purchased on clearance at CHICOS

Hit Your Style Sweet Spot Over 50: 2017 Fashion Trends, Part 2

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence.

Last week, we began a month long discussion about 2017 fashion trends for women over 50.  I discussed artisan designs and Jennifer showed us the beautiful mules now available. Find both HERE.

Today, we will show you two more trends. We do this  in an effort to remain current and have some fun with fashion.

Like this one....fun, funky pants!  This one began last year and continues forward....with flowy, ankle-length, sporty, slim large, fitted, culottes...anything goes, pants. There are many fun designs and options in this trend.  Since I am seen in predominantly pants over dresses, I really like options to mix up my styles in a creative, and flattering way.  These are from a brand called IC Collection which in my world is featured at Dillard's and I found these in one of my favorite local boutiques, Andie & Barbara.  The sequined tank is Soft Surroundings; the knit jacket is JJill; and the Sam Edelman Ballet Flats were found at DSW.  (The poor dead fern did not make it through the last freeze!)
Tips:
1. Use your favorite retailer's three way mirror and make sure the style is flattering to your figure.  They may be fun, but they need to fit well.
2. Think of ways you will wear them.  You do not want to be deflated when they come home with you and there is nothing in your closet which goes with the pant.  Pinterest and blogs are there to help get your inspiration soaring.
3.  Be courageous about wearing them in all situations, but also be confident.  Always step out of the house with confidence and a smile
Ok, I never write the word funky without thinking about Steve Martin when he sang FUNKY TUK on Saturday Night Life...many, many years ago!  IT still makes me laugh! Do you remember it?  I am certain YouTube could help us out!  And if you want to see more, funky pant options just look below.  Also, for another 2017 trend, let's check out JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE!

Keep Smiling!

Fashion Over 50 Style Tip: How I Wear My Faux Leather Leggings

I love these leggings.  I bought them last year at Soft Surroundings and the minute the weather turned cold this year, I pulled them on!  They are a great leather-like pant and very comfortable.  AND, now they are on sale in the Soft Surroundings boutique.  Just click on picture of the model in the pants and you can go there...you can pick them up for very little and much less than I paid for them!  It is a great deal.

I wear them many different ways.  This look includes:

A turtleneck by Soft Surroundings
A cashmere wrap and necklace from CHICOS
Liz Claiborne Boots from MARSHALLS

One of my favorite ways is to wear them with a flowy, soft tunic and my leather ballet flats.  I am so glad I had the courage to wear them in the first place...as I said...they are a favorite!

Now, just for fun, here is another look my co-worker Cindy put together this week.  So many of you enjoyed Cindy in THIS POST, I decided to bring her back!
Happy, happy Friday!!

VSP Direct.com: A New Year, See Better With VSP

A Sponsored Post

Yes, I,m back to make sure you know about Individual Vision Plans VSP® .  I wrote about VSP at the end of last month and received a lot of interest in this workable plan.

As we age, proper eye care is critical, and our vision often changes every year, so a good vision plan is vitally important.  We should be receiving regular eye exams every year because they can show early signs of cataracts, retinal degeneration, and glaucoma.  Also, it’s possible to catch early stages of diabetes, hypertension, and even some life-threatening conditions, such as a brain tumor, through a thorough eye exam.

My husband and I both wear glasses now and both of us are very picky in the style of the eye wear.  We join about 150 million Americans wearing corrective eye wear and spending almost a total of $15 billion a year to get what we like.

He tried contact lenses and decided to join me with the regular eye glasses for our preferred eye wear. I also wear prescription sunglasses, because at age 63, driving becomes more and more of a challenge.  I don’t think I could drive in a big city if I didn’t have proper eye wear I can rely upon to help me see.

With all of this said, it’s important to have a good  vision plan. VSP  offers a individual vision plans direct to consumers through VSPDIRECT.COM.  Vision plans are available to all individuals and their families who currently do not have vision coverage through an employer, are self-employed, or used to have vision insurance through VSP, but their employer has now moved to another carrier. It’s also a great option for anyone who’s at or nearing retirement and wants to continue their doctor/patient relationship.   Many of us fall into that last category.

I encourage you to check out individual vision plans from VSP  HERE if you are in need of  quality eye care .  It can make such a difference at how much comfort and joy we have as we age.

Fashion Over 50: Jacket Magic

I love jackets.  Even over age 50, you will find me wearing a jacket during and off work...I love them with denim and skirts.  The real reason I love jackets is because they are a great way to take off 10 pounds...a well made and fit jacket is pure magic to your figure.

I have learned by experience the perfect jacket for me has seaming and is not boxy; it has length (I tend to wear more of the boyfriend style jacket); it fits on the shoulders; and can be worn often.  Despite the warm climate I am in, I wear jackets all year round and when I need a boost of confidence, I always put on a jacket.

I selected some at different price points for your consideration.
How do you feel about jackets?

Keep Smiling!

Hit Your Style Sweet Spot Over 50: 2017 Fashion Trends & Tips

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence.

Jennifer and I have decided to dive into one of those controversial topics with women over 50...fashion trends.  Some women love them and see a trend as a way to remain current and have fun with fashion.  Other women hate them and think the word should be totally tossed out the door.  If you are in the first group, and desire to know what the 2017 fashion trends are and how they can work for you, then for the next four weeks, you might want to catch what we are covering on Hit Your Style Sweet Spot.
I like to concentrate on the messages my fashion choices say about me....and one of those messages is creativity.  I want the world to know I am creative and in a creative industry.  So, the trend I have decided to begin with is ARTISAN, ARTISTICALLY INSPIRED.

One website I discovered wrote how this trend is beyond fashion and covers several areas, "Growing consumer demand for upscale, authentic goods means more retail companies will offer artisan and culinary products in 2017. These premium, high-quality products are produced by experts who are passionate about their craft. To satisfy consumers who are ravenous for refined culinary experiences, coffee giant Starbucks recently launched the premium Starbucks Reserve store format. These stores offer exclusive micro-lot coffees paired with artisanal food offerings from Princi, a chain of Italian artisan bakeries, which earned Starbucks’ investment. 1 2 In addition, hand-crafted breads, pastries, chocolate, cheese and other foods made with fine, fresh ingredients will sell well this year. 3 Beyond foods, big retailers like Nordstrom have
approached small artisans to entice new shoppers with locally
made, handcrafted items. "  (FIND MORE HERE)

This is not new in my world.  I discovered high quality, artisan fashion on a boutique site, ARTFUL HOME, last year.  The styles are amazing and fit my life perfectly right now.

This JACKET is from Artful Home. I am thrilled to see this type of fashion receiving more attention in 2017.

My only tip is to not get carried away with all of the fabulous artistic garments now available.  I like to have one garment do all the talking and not compete with another.  The artisan accessories are also true statement pieces and can make a neutral look unique and special.

Many readers have seen this jacket on me before, but today I styled it with a blue knit top and not the usual black, and I selected a different necklace previously purchased at a consignment shop.

Artisan is a fashion trend I will enjoy following and watching across several retailers. It takes investment dressing to a new level and helps us to support a different group of fashion designers.  It is a trend which gives the more creative and artsy woman a way to put her personal stamp on her style.

Now, let's go see which 2017 trend JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE is telling us about today!

Have a Colorful Week!
