Fashion Over 50: Summer Sunday Style Sweet Spot with Boho and Floral

Bohemian fashion never really goes out of style for women over 50.  It resurfaces each season with a different focus.  Last year, the trend was lace, and this year it is floral.  But, the same relaxed, artisan feeling is always there.
Meet my dear friend, Eileen.  She is a wife, mother, grandmother, and substitute teacher who also has a fashion career background.  I thought she looked so cute recently in these floral embroidered jeans with a lace tunic.  A great way to say "comfy" with style.

Eileen loves to shop Stein Mart, but I have seen these type of jeans in retailers from Neiman Marcus to Macys.

I found some selections for you below if you like the style.

I have left bohemian in my past for the most part, but I have many friends who love and wear it often.

I believe Eileen hit the sweet spot with this outfit! And there are so many outfits you could do with a great tunic like this one.  She purchased the tunic and jeans at Stein Mart, and her necklace is from a Premiere Jewelry party.

How about you?  Are you a fan of boho...why or why not...please share.  Then enjoy the pieces I selected from the latest in bohemian style.

Keep Smiling, Everyone!

New Aging Message, New Outlook, New Hashtag...When I'm 64!

Yes, I am over 60 and Feeling Fantastic!  Today I am 64!  Can you hear the Beatles swimming in my head?  Which lead me to look up the lyrics to the song.  Yes, they paint a picture of an elderly couple which is not really a modern day elderly couple…(I do not think you will ever see me knitting by the fire)…but I do love to hold my grandchildren on my knee!   It is not really a song about getting older as much as a song about unconditional love, “Will You Still Love Me, When I’m 64?”

This brings me to a perfect topic for my birthday post.  Do you love yourself unconditionally at the age you currently are?  This is the crux of the matter for those of us marching into our older years.  If we accept ourselves as older women, we will discover more joy, contentment, and confidence.  But, if we are always trying to be younger and go the other direction, then there is nothing but frustration and depression on the table.  I am very concerned about the number of young women I know in their 20s and 30s who have regular Botox appointments.  What caused them at such a young age to begin this process?  I submit it is an overall society message against aging.
Let’s face it….we age.  There is no way to stop the process, but I can do everything to look and feel my best at the age I currently am.    When I see hashtags like #ageless, #agelesstyle, #anti-aging, #agedistruption, I just have to laugh….nothing true about a single one.  In fact, sucking women into philosophies which can encourage them to be twenty again is harmful.  I have accepted the fact I will not ever wear a bikini...or have an completely smooth face…or rock short shorts…or many other things from my past.
However, with my acceptance comes a freedom to be me at my best right now.  True, I do color my hair, but not to look younger, to look my best with my complexion and style messaging.   I have many friends who look fabulous with their gray, because of skin tones and most of them use a colorist to get the perfect shade of gray. It is more about what is right for me at this time....and about you doing what is right for you.   But, doing this for the purposes of looking younger would just lead to depression for me…I am not going to go backwards ever again.   This is why comparisons can be deadly to our state-of-mind.

Most of you know, I make style decisions based on the messages I send with my look from head to toe…savvy, creative, approachable, strong, current.    All of the adjectives must work together.  There are many current styles which do not say strong and intelligent to me.  I am happy at 64 to have a career and wisdom from experiences in my past.

I named this blog Over 50 Feeling 40 because I believe it made a statement of hope and encouragement.  I did not name it Over 50 Looking 40 on purpose.   Traditional fashion media often focuses more on the outside and not on the overall message of confidence, wellness, and acceptance.  I hope you will always find that here.

My new hashtag?  #ageacceptance  I do this in an effort to encourage you to love yourself today at the age you are.  Hopefully, by beginning there, you will see that age acceptance also means self- care at its best….inside and out!  It will put a smile on your face and a song in your heart!  (Rather than trying to be something we will never be again)  Life is too short to not live it to it's fullest...confident with a smile on our faces.

64...and Smiling!

Loma de Vida Spa: Worth the Destination

RELAX…this is a word which has not been in my personal vocabulary.  More than one massage therapist and doctor has said these words, “You don’t know how to relax, do you?”  Perhaps it is because I was raised in a home full of tension…not sure…but, nevertheless, the word has haunted me, more than blessed me.
Until last week.  I am so thankful to the therapists at The LOMA de VIDA SPA at the LA CANTERA RESORT.  This is a true destination spa in every sense of the word.  For one whole day, I learned what the word RELAX really means.
Loma de Vida was constructed with beautiful views of our hill country location in San Antonio.  Lovely vegetation and big Texas sky follow every visitor throughout the experience.  As I waited for my first treatment, I sat in the cool breeze (which I did not know existed in San Antonio in July) and listened to the birds and soothing music…real birds, not pre-recorded. The quiet and peace is incredible for one who rarely slows down.

After a time of breathing deep and letting go of all going on around me, I was met by my first technician, a lovely woman originally from Turkey.  She took me to a small studio, again with a view, and over the next two hours, I received these treatments:

“UBER DETOX:  For anyone in need of experiencing a sense of deep renewal and purification. A muscle-warming, remineralizing and purifying body treatment with the therapeutic aspects of the Tuscan thermal waters to stimulate energy flow, help to relieve aches and pains associated with joint problems as well as muscular tension.
Reflexology deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to the glands, organs and systems of the body. Stimulating these reflexes properly can help many health problems in a natural way. Reflexology provides a beneficial effect on the organs and a person’s general health.”

I do not believe I have ever felt myself completely relax until this moment….and it was amazing.  The entire two hours complete with lavender oils and treatment for sore muscles and joints was beyond description…and I really am not being overboard.  Remember, I didn’t know how to relax.  For two hours, I was completely chill.
This beautiful room also has a balcony.  That is where my lunch was served.  I selected a Grilled Shrimp Salad with an Island Cooler made of pineapple, apple, beets, watermelon, oranges, and turmeric.
After lunch, I spent some time in the herbal steam room and made my sinus passages very happy.  Also it opens pores prior to a facial …. Which was next.  The facial I experienced…like none other…was 90 minutes!

“Ultimate Radiance Lift:  Achieve instant results that noticeably lift, tone and firm the skin, leaving you with a flawless, healthy and younger looking complexion. The ground-breaking Rose Infinity Collection uses Nobel Prize winning research that works at a cellular level to repair aging DNA, radically increase moisture levels and stimulate collagen production. Wrinkles and lines are plumped up for visibly smoother, younger looking skin. The power of this collection of products is accelerated by gentle micro-currents to deliver active ingredients deeper into the skin, while also giving a non-surgical face lift that will tighten and focus on your key areas of concern to dramatically reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The result is younger looking skin and a radiant complexion.”
I have written about micro-currents before and am a complete fan of the process, so I was excited to remind my face of its youth!  The procedure also included more head, neck and shoulder massage…just adding to the relaxed state-of-mind.   The perfect way to face my next birthday on the horizon!
I cannot recommend LOMA de VIDA enough and for those outside of the city…I say a resounding YES this is worth a destination and LA CANTERA RESORT is a beautiful place to stay.  You will be glad you made the choice to visit San Antonio this way.
I need to thank all of them for teaching me that I can RELAX, and it is important for my wellness to do this often.  We must take care of ourselves, ladies.

Keep Smiling and Relaxing!

Disclaimer:  I was gifted part of my experience from my family for Mother's Day, and the rest from the Spa...the words and sentiments are all my own.

Fashion Over 50: Summer Sunday Style Sweet Spot with Statement Jackets

The weeks of summer are soaring by. I was thinking I would need to interject some of my own pictures on Sundays, but I have found so many fabulous women over 50 this summer who have inspired me, there is no need to stick in my photos!!  Today, let's talk about the power of a statement jacket...
Meet my friend, Barbara, a strong, savvy boutique owner in San Antonio.  Barbara is loved by her customers for the chic beautiful styles she brings to them and for the chic inspirational style she displays herself.
Barbara is a classic dresser, and often makes her own statements with classic styling as she has with this printed blazer and blouse for a beautiful summer look.  She wears her years proudly and is one determined business woman with the perseverance to see her through whatever comes her way. (Including an early spring tornado which almost shut down her business for good)  Her style says....I am in charge!

My favorite style writer, Stacy London, calls this the New A.G.E. style....Attractiveness, Generosity, and Experience shining through.  In fact, Stacy specifically writes, "Show your A.G.E.in a statement coat, in patterns and/or black-and-white.  Strong contrasts in general make bolder statements."  Almost seems as if Barbara read the book, THE TRUTH OF STYLE.  Stacy says this is the feminine version of power dressing. (If you would like to know more about the book, just click on the title)

I love jackets and how they work with pants, skirts or jeans.  I definitely think Barbara has hit the style sweet spot with this one.

What about you...how do you feel about jackets for your over 50 wardrobe?  Do you wear them in the summer?

Tell us...and then enjoy some of these jackets I found for your consideration......

Wear Your Smiles Proudly!

Loving July Sales for Accessories!

July Clearance Sales are in full swing with early fall sales just around the corner.  I think you know how much I love a wardrobe with great foundation pieces in neutrals. One of the ways I keep my wardrobe fresh with the appearance of changes is with current, fun accessories.
Both of these necklaces were purchased recently at Chico's.  It is worth it at Chicos to be a Passport Member (free listing, free delivery, and additional savings every time); and to be on their email list.  I bought these for $9.99 at a special email sale blitz a couple of weeks ago.
I am currently going through a "clutch" phase.  I find myself carrying them more often and I love this one which I discovered at a local boutique for 60% off ($14.99)!  It is so cute!

With new accessories, and a wardrobe of my neutrals I can keep my looks fresh and interesting.  I selected some accessories on sale below....and

Tell us if you have purchased any new accessories lately!

Keep Smiling!

Fashion Over 50: Lunch With A Friend of This Blog

Some of you will remember my precious friend, GiGi.  She was the reason I began this blog in July 2010.  She encouraged me and has always been a special support system and inspiration.  My heart was broken when she moved away.
Last year, Gigi was diagnosed with breast cancer and has been through chemo, radiation, a double mastectomy, and is now in the final stages of treatment.  This is another reason I was so happy to see her...because, as you can tell, she looks fabulous!  So chic, stylish, and joyful.  It brought me such peace to know she is doing this well.
We sat and talked non-stop for almost five hours!  Ate birthday treats...The restaurant staff was beginning to light the candles for evening and giving us those "time-to-go-girls" stares! But, she is a friend who gets me to my core...we have a special connection...always have...always will.
We both wore print and color...perfect for an afternoon of laughs!

My jacket is from a local boutique I love and is a line called Coconut.....

My necklace was a recent Chico's sale purchase.  I love it!

Also, her fun sandals were a recent purchase at Marshalls.

It was hard to leave...not knowing when we will see each other again...but I was so thankful for this afternoon.  She sends a special hello to all of you who remember her regular appearances on the blog!

Do you consider lunch with a friend a special occasion?  What do you like to wear?  Since Gigi loves tunics, I selected some for you to consider below...and most are on sale!

Keep Smiling!

Fashion Over 50: Summer Sunday Style Sweet Spot with Black & White

Just when we thought it could not get any hotter in San Antonio, the forecast came out to reveal even higher temps for this next week.  It is a bit of a challenge when you desire to look your very best.  My friend, Nancy, caught my attention this week with her fresh, stylish black & white ensemble....
Isn't she cute...with that beautiful smile as an accessory, this completely works.  I love the statement black & white makes...chic, fresh, and confident.  I also like the contrast of the brown sandals and gold jewelry.  For some reason, I usually style summer B & W with silver, or a color in the jewelry.  But I like the gold very much.

Nancy is a busy wife, mother, grandmother, caregiver to her own  mother and professional woman.  She always dresses her best and sends a message of strength..."I have this handled!"

She said this top was a past Vince Camuto purchase.

It definitely hits her style sweet spot, and hopefully inspires more of you to consider new ways to style your black and white.  You also could check out some of the items I found for you below!

How do you feel about black & white as summer options?

Keep Smiling, Everyone!

Tapping into My Inner DIY- Spirit at Goodwill

Want to know a secret?  I have a hidden desire to create and make things deep inside of me.  But, honestly, I am not very good at it...that is why I have to keep it simple.  One of my favorite places to hang out in my spare time, is one of the many great Goodwill locations we have in my town, San Antonio!

Let's take these coffee mugs, for example. I have discovered some of the coolest mugs at GOODWILL over the past four years since I have been on their official blogger team.  I like to take a mug like this and plant a pretty flower or bouquet in it and deliver it to a friend with a message...Let's go to lunch...Let's go to a movie...Let's meet for tea.  So much more fun than just calling to invite them out.  I have seen mugs even remain on desks for awhile after delivery!
Last week, I discovered this stack of Christmas bowls by Churchill made in Columbia.  They actually may be valuable and I bought the all 6 for $2.99.  I think they would make precious gifts ...filled with Christmas candies or scented soaps for ladies in my office.  Or I just might keep them.
After I have my moments with DIY dreams, I always pull out the fashionista to enjoy some of the great finds at GOODWILL SA.

I was happy to walk out with this top from the Loft...tags still on...brand new. It is fun to save on a print, I might otherwise not purchase at full price.  But I do like it.   So, I left with a smile on my face and I know this fun helps the community.

GOODWILL GIVES BACK to our community with jobs, job training, and veteran assistance.
It is a great way to tap into my inner DIY and fashionista!

Keep Smiling!!

NOTE:  Please remember if you see crazy things going on with my blog...I am in the middle of a re-design and making some changes. Hopefully, it will all be over soon! I know the pages have disappeared, but there will be new ones appear with the new look! Thanks for your patience.
