Over 50 Clothing Tells the Story: Victim or Victor?

I am always sad when I meet women who have given up over the age of 50.  Hard times or criticisms have shut them down.    In their minds, life is over…opportunities dried up…there is no more fun ahead…and mentally, they are done.   These are conversations I have had with women who dress frumpy and believe it does not matter how older women look.  Some offer excuses with tales of hard times which have resulted in a sad "I don't care" lifestyle.

I respectively disagree. A change could mean life is just beginning and far from over. I went from giving up to diving in, so I know first hand the benefits of beginning to care for your appearance again. It can open opportunities you never dreamed of.   I write often about the messages we send with our choice of clothing and I firmly believe choosing to look put together and confident can open doors at any age…whether those doors are in the work world or nonprofit/volunteer world.
I became a magazine editor at age 63.  Our copy editor, Kathryn, is amazing.  She knows the AP Stylebook better than most; verifies EVERYTHING; hates overuse of exclamation marks; and questions every comma.  Kathryn recently turned 80.  She always looks stylish…even in a cool message T shirt and denim, or simple black pants, pearls, and ballet flats.  She communicates intelligence, strength, and life with her selection of clothing.  Of course, she has challenges of aging…but she never lets those challenges keep her down or from doing a top notch job.  I am proud and honored to work alongside her.  When Kathryn and I are introduced as editors of our magazines, we confidently communicate messages of strength with how we style our own personal looks.

I also think we often forget our roles as older women to inspire and instruct the younger generation.  We set the examples with what we wear and how we live our lives.    In order for me to speak with a younger employee about what she is communicating in the marketplace, I need to have earned that respect up front.
We can look confident at any age…any price point…any body size.  There are no excuses to putting our best foot forward.  Frumpy is a choice…not a consequence of hard times.
Opportunities to live a productive and empowered life can open up when we choose to look our best.  If we look sad, then we feel sad…and so do people around us.

Every single woman reading this post has been through difficult times.  We choose if we are going to live as victims or victors. Your personal appearance will tell the world which choice you have made! (Sorry Kathryn, I love exclamation marks!)

I have selected some items below which are currently on sale and would help any of us dress with confidence...

Keep Smiling...and Living, Everyone!

Roasted Vegetables: Easy and Delicious

I have been studying to learn more about food...not dieting...healthy, clean as possible...food.  Which means we are eating more vegetables.  We have a pattern on Sundays of eating a meal with roasted veggies.  They are easy and soooo good.
I start by mixing whatever fresh veggies I have on hand.  It seems that this dish is different each week.  Yesterday, we combined broccoli, a red pepper, mushrooms, carrots, baby tomatoes, a little celery, and a little onion.
I toss them with olive oil, a dash of sea salt, a dash of pepper, Mrs. Dash Garlic and Herb flavoring, a pinch of chia seeds, and a pinch of flaxseeds.  Then I will pour them in a pan (this one has nonstick foil on it) and bake in the over at 357 degrees for 35 minutes.  If I include baby potatoes or brussel spouts then the time needs to be 45 minutes.
We ate these yesterday with some baked fish.  I will save the leftover to either take to work for lunch or even to toss with some veggie pasta for a meal early in the week.  This has become a favorite.
Learning to eat more fresh produce is something my whole family is striving for...and I am happy to say we are doing well so far!

What are your favorite ways to eat veggies??

Fashion Over 50: Summer Sunday Style Sweet Spot with Jumpsuits

Welcome back to my third Summer Sunday Style Sweet Spot for women over 50... where we see how women are bringing their best looks in the summer heat!  Meet my sweet friend, Jeannie, who was rocking this jumpsuit at a recent backyard picnic...
She looks amazing and her confident smile says it all. Jeannie is a wife, mother, grandmother, and educator.  She always looks great.  I have also seen some ladies who are wearing jumpsuits with kimonos or wraps for special events.  Jeannie says she has had this one for awhile.

I have never tried a jumpsuit...really for comfort reasons...because at this stage of my life, I visit the ladies room...let's just say...often!

But, in looking at other ladies in them and seeing some very figure flattering styles, I might be convinced to at least try one on!  Look below to see some of the great options out there.

Jeannie also complimented her style with a beautiful necklace.  Since it was a warm day, and casual event, she looked perfect in her sandals with freshly painted toes.

So, what do you think about jumpsuits?  Are you in or out?  Have you actually tried one on to come to that decision.

No matter what the rest of us think...I know Jeannie has hit her style sweet spot with this one!

Keep Smiling, everyone!

7 Steps for Shopping the New Retail World of Sales

We live in a new world of retail where many of our favorite stores are beginning to close locations and struggling to find ways to survive.  In the past, one of the best times to shop was during mid-to-late July.  The clearance sales were always amazing.

However, now the sales are constant and you can actually pick up great deals almost constantly.

It is enough to make our heads spin...closets bulge...and budgets bust!

I love sales and love the challenge of finding a great piece at a super price.

However, I have learned to follow these steps in order to keep myself in check:

1.  Evaluate your wardrobe.  Know what you have and don't have in the closet.

2.  Make sure you have great basics.  Once you know those are in your wardrobe then sale shopping is about finding creative, unique fun pieces which stamp your personal style.

3.  I always make sure what I purchase sends the messages I want to send with my clothing.  If it is outside of those messages, then it is a waste of money for me.  I have five adjectives I am looking to communicate each time I leave my home....controlling those five messages has helped me to have a strong, confident style over 50.

4.  I take my measurements often with a tape measure and make sure I know them when shopping.  Sadly, sizes are NOT universal and the measurements are important.

5.  I try on trends in a store so I know what works and doesn't work on my body type.  Then I don't get lured by a trend online...they can be similar to fish bait and just reel us in if we are not careful. I love trends to update and keep my wardrobe current and youthful...but many only work for the young anyway!

6.  Know your best colors and stay true to them.  This summer and fall there are colors for everyone!  I can make my love of military green work all year long...but there are many colors I need to avoid.

7.  Read the small print when shopping big sales online.  Is there a restocking fee?  Is there a non-returnable clause?  Are there special considerations if you pay with Paypal?  Be careful...read.

Here is the fun part, there are great sales at top retailers right now.  If you take the time to really shop, you can find amazing quality and creativity at an incredible price.  This changing world of retail works to our advantage.   Do not assume that some of these stores are out of your price range.  You just might be surprised.  Also, sign up for all of your favorite retailers' emails.  These often bring big announcements and opportunities first.

Also, remember the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is just around the corner ...when you can pick up NEW fall styles at a discount...so save some of your budget!

Now, with all of that behind us...let's see who is having the big sales right now....

Happy Saturday, have fun shopping!

Linen: The Most Controversial Fabric

Linen is by far the most controversial fabric around, but is one of the ways I manage summer heat.  I have learned for linen garments it is worth spending a little more...because then they wrinkle a lot less!  This is an Eileen Fisher kimono and I love it!

It is very cool in summer heat...and the olive green is one of my favorite colors, I can wear all year long.

This look with my ballet flats, and IC Collection pants is one I will wear often over the next few months.  I like the "oriental" style.

The necklace is one I found years ago at Chicos and is a perfect completer piece.

But, back to the original comment...I have so many friends who will not wear linen at all.  I struggled with it for years, until I finally decided to buy one garment which cost more than the others.  I actually sat, up and down, and scrunched it up to see how bad the wrinkling was.   It worked, because this garment is "Pam-style" and ultimately my cost per wear will be very low!

So, how do you feel about linen??

I have some selections for you to consider below including this jacket.

Keep Smiling, Everyone!

Fashion Over 50: Time to Lighten Up!

It is time to lighten up...my style and my attitude toward summer! I am born and raised Texan and still not a fan of the heat.  However, I know many people who love it...moved here for it...and prefer the heat to anything else.  I thought about them last Saturday as I sat at a backyard picnic with sweat running down my back...and I even dressed with light fabrics because the forecast was for a heat index of 105.

Readers know I traditionally dress in saturated colors like this and that I love to wear black!

Just to be different...I am attempting this summer to lighten up more.

Today, I selected my light gray Eileen Fisher pants, a white tunic, and added some "summer" colors in accessories.  I liked it and this is something I can do often.  I am not a fan of pastels (for me), but lighter neutrals with purposeful accessories is something I can do.

I actually grabbed this scarf recently while walking through Chicos...everything is 40% off  at the moment.

Two of my goals right now are to lighten up a bit more this year and to make friends with summer.  I am a July lady, after all, so I should find a way to like it,

How do you lighten up your style in the summertime....

Here are some similar selections for your consideration...

Despite the sweat...Keep Smiling!

Fashion Over 50: Summer Sunday Style Sweet Spot with Shorts

Welcome to our second Summer Sunday Style Sweet Spot (wow, that is a lot of the letter s!)  I want to thank everyone for the feedback and encouragement to continue this feature!  It is a way to say here is a great outfit and look of the week for summer...which officially begins late Tuesday!
Meet my sorority sister, Kathleen.  We re-connected recently at our reunion.  She is showing us a great way to wear shorts over 50.  This weekend we already hit a heat index well over 100 degrees...so it looks like it is going to be one of those long, hard, oppressive summers.  A walking short is the perfect way to do a confident, stylish, figure flattering short.  She chose a floral top to compliment and black leather sandals to accessorize.

I often see professional women pulling off walking shorts with suit jackets over the summer...this garment works for many occasions.

I asked Kathleen where she found these beautiful blue shorts and she said Stein Mart.

Since I need to shop for a pair of walking shorts myself, I put together these selections for you below!  There are lots of different designs and we all need to find what is best for our own body types, but they look great just about everyone!  I am glad to be inspired by Kathleen and know she is hitting the summer style sweet spot right here!  She looks cool, calm and confident.

How do you feel about wearing shorts in the summer?  Are you in or out?

Keep Smiling, Everyone!

Taking Time Out to Honor Pappa Joe

I know it is a day early, but I wanted to take today and pay tribute to my husband...father of three and grandfather of three!
He is a gentle warrior...a strong, loving man who guides, supports, and gives time to each and every one of them.  Our daughter lovingly titled him "Pappa Joe" when she was in high school and it has become his grandfather name...except our grandsons have shortened it to just JOE...which we think is pretty funny!
I am watching my oldest son become the same kind of father and I know it is because he had a wonderful role model.  So I wish he and my husband a Father's Day full of blessings.  I am proud of both of them.  We are also both proud of our son-in-law...the father of our grandsons!  Our grandchildren are in great hands.

Happy Father's Day to All!

Friday Thoughts: Workouts, Facial Products, and Over 50 Fashion

Thank goodness it is Friday!  It has been a very busy month which interrupted my workouts, so I returned to strength training this week and feel sore...but better.  What is so important is to go back even if you have to stop for a while.

I mentioned three of my favorite facial products to my sorority last weekend, so here are the links, ladies, to the ones mentioned specifically....

Also, several of you asked where Linda found her tunic from MONDAY"S POST.  She said she has owned it for five years and it is a FOXCROFT COLLECTION Tunic.  They have some great tunics on their website here and sell at many retailers.  I also own a FOXCROFT tunic which I love and wear often.

Finally, didn't over-70 Sally Field look amazing at the Tony Awards?  She is inspirational. One of the best looks on the Red Carpet last week.

Now it's time to shop for Father's Day!!

Happy Friday and Keep Smiling!

Fashion Over 50: Outrageous, Boring, or Something Else?

Do you consider yourself bold and outrageous?  I read this week about one 76 -year -old woman who had a goal to do something outrageous every week. She did not want her life to be boring and predictable.

I tend to be more on the predictable side.  For example, I love neutrals…like you see on me here and some might say that is boring.   I do wear color, but I really LOVE neutrals and believe them to be strong and chic.  I also do all I can to protect my schedule.  I go to bed and rise at pretty much the same time every day…and I get grumpy when I don’t.  I know that might be a little boring as well…I consider it healthy.

So, I began to ponder being bolder and outrageous and what that would mean in my life right now.  I do not have an answer for you…and I am NOT going to jump out of an airplane (unless someone pushes me!).  What would it mean for you?  How outrageous have you been lately?

About, today’s outfit.  I agree that I might have been a little repetitive lately in my choice of pants.  So, for this day I reached into my closet to take out a pair of older Eileen Fisher slate gray pants I haven’t worn in a while.  I love these pants and they are very cool in the warmer weather.  I also love this necklace with them. I think most of us put silver jewelry with gray, but I like that this necklace demands gold go with it.  (Is that being bold?)  I think there are more choices in the fashion world than just outrageous and boring.  Thank goodness that is the case.

Since I am loving my peep toe wedges, I selected some fun peep toe options for you below….and there are a few on sale.  Nothing outrageous…but some beautiful shoes.

Maybe I will really mix my life up and order a new food today at lunch…it’s a start!

Keep Smiling, Everyone!
