Fashion over 50: How to Love Your Legs!

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence

Recently, Jennifer and I began a series to address some of the aging body parts which many of us over 50 tend to think negatively about.   We began with THE MID-SECTION HERE and then discussed DRESSING THE ARMS HERE.  Today we are moving on and discussing how we love our over 50 legs!
I confess to not being the biggest fan…of dresses and skirts. I do wear them, but, those of you who read this blog often know I am usually clothed in pants.  The simple reason is…I love pants…not because I don’t like my legs!   Pants just seem to be a big part of my personal style!   However, during the summer, I wear dresses more than any other time….heat is the main reason for that.  My legs have some of the usual aging issues, but really I am very confident of how they look.  So, here are some of the fun ways I handle my over 50 legs!
1.  I care for them!  I usually  have an exfoliate in the shower, and I use lotion every day.  I also get regular pedicures…which come with some treatment to the calves as well.  Even though, some of us have less hair and lighter hair on the legs, shaving is a great way to exfoliate and keep your legs healthy and shiny.
2.  Within reason, I love fun hose, like the polka dots above.  The sheer patterns are not too overwhelming and can be a nice accessory to an outfit.  In fact, sheer colored hose are my favorites and I always have some black and blue on hand.  I especially like hose for the dressier times…such as a wedding or a banquet.
3. But, for the really warm temperatures or more casual skirts and dresses I like a nice self tanner.  I try to begin in early spring to keep my legs covered with it.  My favorites are the ones in the slide show below from Soft Surroundings.  I have used these and I love the way they work…the mitt which comes along with the first two is awesome!  I highly recommend either of them.
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? ‘http’ : ‘https’;if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + ‘://’ + ‘widgets.rewardstyle.com’ + ‘/js/shopthepost.js’;d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === ‘object’) if(d.readyState === ‘complete’) {window.__stp.init();}}(document, ‘script’, ‘shopthepost-script’);

One of my personal wardrobe goals the last two years has been to add more dresses and skirts to my wardrobe. It is slowly happening.  I also need a new pair of walking shorts. But for now,  I must to get the self tanner going..quick!
Let me know if you are a fan of dresses and skirts…or predominately a pant fan like me!
Then go check out what JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE has to say about the subject…
Have a great start to a new week!

  1. I am a skirts and dresses fan, all year. I wear sundresses in the summer for casual and skirts for walking on my lunch hour with my friend. I do love jeans, and I do wear dress pants to work, but most often I am all about skirts and dresses. Our dress code at work says we must wear stockings, and I've often said I'm grateful for that as it just looks more polished. So I'm used to that. Even the young ladies in their 20's wear stockings and say how they feel more dressed up. My legs are pretty good for a woman in her 60's, and the sun helps out in the summer since I live outdoors in my free time! I do use sunscreen. I've had little success with self tanners since I swim in the summer and even the most high end ones get mottled when I swim, not a good look coming out of the water! I use the Vaseline for mature skin and love it to stay moisturized. But for me, it's skirts, dresses and the real sun in summer! (I do get annual checks at my dermatologist. )

  2. Hi Karen, Your enthusiasm for dresses does inspire me to keep building that part of my wardrobe. These new self tanners I showed here are awesome, but I can see where swimming might be a problem. Thanks so much for sharing your love of the dress!

  3. I love skirts and dresses but definitely found, as I got older, that legs don't always look so great! To the rescue: Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs http://www.sallyhansen.com/skin-body/airbrush-legs
It is, without a doubt, one of the greatest items to come on the market!!!! A little bit goes a long way. Put it on before you dress, be sure to rub in all over and then wash your hands. It stays on forever: even overnight and does not rub off. At all. It comes off in shower, or when wet, very easily. Absolutely the best product out there!!

  4. Forgot to say: be sure to use the lotion and not the spray. Spray gets all over the bathroom! And, lotion comes in a small travel size tube also.

  5. I have many more pants than dresses or skirts in my wardrobe. Like you I would like to add more of them. I do wear a dress more often in the summer when it's hot. When I was younger I wore more dresses and skirts but as I've gotten older my legs are not as shapely as they once were so I tend to keep them covered.

  6. Thanks for the info, Libby. There are many great products on the market now. I love the ones I use because of the mitt and how well it covers. Thanks for stopping by!

  7. I don't feel comfortable going bare-legged without self-tanner which I start in April. I don't wait for it to get splotchy and use it twice a week after exfoliating with an exfoliating glove. Then I wear mostly long summer skirts and crops or ankle length jeans. I'm 65 in July and it is what it is…

  8. Oh, your legs are beautiful, and you look much slimmer with a shorter fashion profile in your clothing! I have tree trunks for legs, so I keep them covered, but you look amazing. I enjoy your blog…

  9. I used to love my legs too, but now at 67 they just "aren't like they used to be"…but then nothing is…I use self tanner too and if in a hurry and don't have time for that I use a natural color that goes on immediately…I think its by Sally Hansen…it works wonders and i have had complements about my tan…

  10. Self tanner really helps us to love them no matter the stage we find ourselves at…if it wasn't for the heat in Texas, I would probably just live in pants! Thanks Renee!

  11. Nancy, they have changed so much…easier, better quality, better color, not splotchy…I love the ones I linked to above which come with the mitt! No problem with color on the hands. Thanks for stopping by!

  12. Winter dresses are no problem–can hide those legs in tights or boots. But oh those summer dresses–so cool and comfy but leg-revealing. I'm not so worried about leg color as I am about texture. my legs no longer glisten. I tried self-tanning once–hated the smell and the orangey color. Maybe the Sally Hansen leg makeup is the ticket. but something's got to give. thanks for helping address the issue.

  13. Look at the self tanners in my slide show above…I have used the ones from Soft Surroundings…they are by far the best. Love the ones which come with a mitt. I highly recommend…no odor or orange color!

  14. Thank you. This was just the push I needed. You have inspired me to take better care of my legs. Every day since your post I have been following your suggestions and using the exfoliator and self tanner. Thanks for the motivation.
