Career Reinvention Over 60: My New Role

Yesterday, I announced HERE my new role as the Editor of San Antonio Woman Magazine.  The original editor was Beverly Purcell Guerra (middle) who helped to begin the publication 14 years ago.  Nicole Greenberg (R) is the outgoing editor due to needs at home, and I am honored to be handed the reins.

It is not an easy task...but I am going to give it my all.  There is an amazing team surrounding me.  One of the keys to successful career reinvention is to understand the value of the team!

Also, it is important to understand the times and the market.  We are a successful print publication...in a time when others are throwing in the towel.  So far, our market loves the product!  Understanding the times means the importance of overseeing a strong online and social media presence.

And it is also important to remember the history.  Beverly was amazing.  She actually worked over a 17 year span at Vogue for editors Diana Vreeland, Grace Mirabella, and Anna Wintour.  This was written of her original vision:

" Right away, she envisioned the magazine more along the lines of Vanity Fair than a traditional women’s publication. In her initial Letter from the Editor, she wrote: “The goal of the magazine is to capture the spirit of San Antonio’s women and to write about the issues, the ideas and the trends that women want to know more about. We will present creative, stimulating and provocative social and civic issues for our readers.” In addition, every issue has featured a personality profile and a variety of articles on the arts, health, food, decorating, finances and homes among other topics."

When speaking of Beverly, publisher Mike Gaffney once said...

“For all intents and purposes Beverly is SAN ANTONIO WOMAN,” he says. “The magazine’s content is a direct reflection of her high standards of quality, which gives us credibility with the readers. She is not willing to compromise on that. She is also a person who is passionately interested in this community and has a finger on the pulse of what our readers are interested in. She keeps the content focused on the people of San Antonio, and that’s our strength."

My goal is for Mike to say the same of me one day!

Career reinvention over 60 is possible...hope you will join me for the wild ride!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Champagne and Fresh Peaches: Why Now?

When I was younger (Yes, I was once!), I saw a movie with my parents called Saratoga Trunk with Ingrid Bergman and Gary Cooper which was released in 1945.  In the movie, Bergman's character drank champagne over fresh peaches.  For some reason, even in my youth, this stuck with me and I have always wanted to do the same...Finally, I have an occasion worthy of it...
Join me today on MIDLIFE BOULEVARD to see what I am celebrating!  You all are a special part of this journey!

And, by the way, the peaches in champagne were awesome!

UPDATE:  Now, that I have done this for one month...I am able to continue blogging just the same!!  I will still be here...thanks for the support.

Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: Necklace Considerations for Women Over 50

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence

Today, Jennifer and I are discussing accessories...but I decided to  focus on necklaces.    There are very few links in this post, because these have been in my wardrobe for a long time...but I picked some new favs at the end.
Necklaces have gone from my second favorite accessory to my favorite...taking over a scarf-love I had for many years.  But, now I prefer a necklace and if you follow my blog, you know I love them!
I am 5'8" and am able to wear bold, statement necklaces like the MARIE NECKLACE above. I like how they add the creative, fun touch to my outfits and draw the eye to where I would like it to go!

I do have to be careful with the length...sometimes the very long ones will accentuate the tummy...when I do not want the eye to go there...Oh that pesky tire in the middle.

However, when I have a garment which hides the "tire" then a long necklace will elongate and slim my look.

Such as the necklace in the picture below....

I purchase necklaces everywhere...from thrift, consignment, to the actual stores.  Sometimes the piece is worth it to splurge...such as the necklace above.  I have worn it so often that the cost per wear is very low...and I still receive compliments every time it is worn.

Where do the majority of my necklaces come from?

Easily, Chicos!  I love their jewelry and I have paid from full price to deep discounts for it.  Make sure you are a Passport Member for more discounts.

I keep most of my necklaces in zip lock bags in a huge hatbox.  There is probably a better way, but this seems to work.  Every now and then I go through the box to see what I have not worn in awhile.

A select few hang on the rack pictured at the top of the post.

So, how bold to you go?  Do you like a bold statement piece or a quite, chic, classic statement?  Or, like me, do you like both?  Then, let's go see what JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE has to say about accessories as she reports from Iceland!

Make sure you join me on Tuesday for a huge, special announcement!

Disclaimer:  There are a couple of necklaces featured in this post I was given by the brand.  But the words are my own.

Keep Smiling!

Below are my favorites currently at Chicos...I do already own a couple of them!

How to Get a Stain + A Clorox 2® Giveaway

A Sponsored Post

I shared with you earlier this week about all of the rain we have experienced in South Texas.  I am living a very full, busy life right now with my work at a local magazine publisher and with my active blog...not to mention my family and social engagements.

Sometimes the rain makes it very difficult to literally stay on the path.

That is what happened to me last Saturday.  I was quickly attempting to run many errands before going to my son's house for dinner.  The rain made my sandals quite slippery and before you know it...I ended up in a puddle while trying to bring groceries into the house.  Of course, I know how to get a stain and, thank goodness, I know how to get it out!

However, I can celebrate this stain and continue to live my full life when I have great products like Clorox 2®Stain Remover and Color Booster. I have used Clorox 2®  for years and it has never let me down.  In fact, it is even better...stains are gone and colors are brighter.
I have learned to pre-treat stains immediately. I did it with the easy Clorox 2® Pre-Treat Stain Remover Pen where I gently rubbed it into the stain.  I let it sit for about 10 minutes before tossing it into my high efficiency washer.  Then I added the Clorox 2®  in with my detergent...added the remainder of my white laundry...and never was worried the mud would not come out.  Grass stains, mud splatters and wine spills are all signs of an active life, well lived.  And while we want to delight in all our accomplishments (for me that was getting many errands accomplished easily), when we hit an occasional stain making experience (like a fall) we also want to rest assured the stain will be gone!

I have also used Clorox 2®  with success on a stain I missed and had allowed to sit awhile...I just pre-treated by rubbing it into the stain and letting it sit over night.
If you want more tips, for how to get the most out of life and laundry, just go by CLOROX.COM.
Of course, it worked...I did not consider for a moment it wouldn't.  So the worse part of the fall was my pride...now I know not to wear those sandals in the rain!  It even works on tough stains like blueberry, mustard, coffee and gravy.   Learn more about how to treat at CLOROX.COM.

Now, for the fun part.  Someone is going to win a Clorox 2®
Gift Pack and $200 gift card to CLOUD 9 LIVING.  Just put your entry into the Rafflecopter below.

Have a wonderful Wednesday all!

Stella & Dot Fall Style: The San Antonio Way

"Use your passion to keep yourself honest:  Are you fulfilled? Do you need something more? These are bold questions to ask.  Don't be afraid to come up with bold answers.  It's never too late to pursue what you don't know and what you passionately want." - Jessica Diullo Herrin, CEO and Founder of Stella & Dot Family Brands.

Local executive director for STELLA & DOT, Christina Welch hosted a Fall 2016 rollout for the beautiful line last week in San Antonio.  Christina lives what her boss wrote in the recent book, Find Your Extraordinary...she is passionate about what she does.

Our local fashionistas all came out to OOO and AHHH over the gorgeous jewelry.  Everyone was commenting on the beauty and quality of the line.

The ODEON PENDANT NECKLACE is a statement piece and captured my attention immediately.  However, if you look at the more delicate necklace you will see a new line from Stella & Dot called Covet.   I think my daughter and daughter-in-law would love these necklaces...which would be hard for a baby to pull off, they are so graceful and elegant.  Christina is currently taking pre-orders.  Covet also includes a beautiful collection of leather handbags.

But, here is my favorite piece which I want on my own arm!  It is called the ALILA LACE CUFF...it is stunning and I really did not want to take it off.

Something I like about the Stella & Dot necklaces is that many of them can be worn multiple ways and lengths.  It gives so much versatility.  My favorite design which offers options is called the GARLAND FRINGE NECKLACE.

It was a wonderful evening with champagne, cupcakes, a great venue, good company, and, of course, a girl's best friend...fabulous jewelry.  To see more, just contact Christina at christina@christinawelch.com  She will be happy to share more with you and help with orders.

Order here the BOOK BY STELLA & DOT FOUNDER (quoted at the beginning of post)  It is very inspirational for all ages.

Keep Smiling!

Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: Women Over 50 Rain Wear

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence

We have had a lot of rain lately, but I am not complaining.  We needed it after many years of drought. But, I confess, the constant rain presents fashion challenges....especially with hair and shoes.  At least those are my two largest areas of concern!

I know some people think umbrellas are not cool, but because of my hair I am willing to risk being labeled a nerd.  If my hair get's wet, it frizzes and balloons out.  An umbrella is a must, but there are so many fun patterns...why go with a boring one!

I only wear rainboots when the water is really high.  I can wear them and carry a pair of professional shoes to work. I have owned these Sperry Boots for a few years, but Macys carries a beautiful new pair of SPERRY BOOTS HERE and I think they have my name on them!  Many times I will just select a shoe which is made of a water resistant material and a little wet will not ruin the shoe.  I love to wear my patent flats when it is raining...they are already shiny and look wet.

In Texas, a lightweight trench is a must.  We do not want to sweat in our work wear under the trench.  I have owned this trench and umbrella for a while, so I cannot give you links...but I know there are fun ones out there and I love the options below. Consider this London Fog at Nordstrom...there are many size options and it is fun with the Nordstrom umbrella:

Stuffed in my boots, are my new JEGGINGS FROM CHICOS...so stylish and comfy!  Buy them tight, they do have some stretch in the fabric...but you will love how they feel.

Now I mentioned my hair....I am now a forever fan of the KERATASE HAIR SERUM ...it is magic.  You pay a bit more...but so worth it for those of us who battle the frizz!  I am a recent convert!

Now, let's go see how JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE is battling the weather in Iceland as she enjoys a special birthday trip!  Then, tell us, what are your favorite ways to look great in the rain!

Have a safe and joyful week everyone!

I would like to note this topic was selected before flooding became so serious in Louisiana and some areas of Texas.  My heart and prayers are with those who are suffering.

Work Wear for Women over 50: Cooking Up Your Own Combo

Happy Friday, all!  Sometimes fashioning a work outfit is the same as throwing ingredients together to cook up a personal style.  I rarely have pieces from just one place...though it does happen.
Today's look included ingredients from Dillards, Chicos, Marshalls,  a designer named Jana Kos, and Nordstrom.
The Eileen Fisher kimono jacket is from DILLARDS; the chic top and necklace were from a new collection at Chicos...see the links below: the skirt is a few years old and was designed by a talented woman JANA KOS; the purse is Adrienne Vittadinio from MARSHALLS, Halogen shoes were from NORDSTROM.
I wear suit jackets often, so I decided to wear the kimono style just to mix it up a bit... the result for me was a confident style.

Then this outfit took me to a fun business lunch...good company, excellent cuisine!  Do you find you wear all of one brand, or tend to  mix things up a bit?

Happy Friday Everyone!

Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: How Women 50+ Can Look Cool in Summer Heat

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence

The past week has been our hottest week this summer...really hot ...over 100! Jennifer and I discovered in a phone conversation that California and Texas were under a similiar heat wave...thus the topic was born. It is always a challenge to look professional and not sweat at the same time.  So, I was so excited to find this new TRAVELERS KNIT JACKET AT CHICOS!
I was shocked when I touched it...the knit is so lightweight!  Yet, it looks heavier.  It will be a great transition piece into fall.  For a very hot day, I can wear it with a pencil skirt.  But, I really like it with the SO SLIMMING PANT, also at Chico's.

I added my new BALLET FLAT EXCLUSIVE TO MACYS from Anne Klein at Macy's.

Fabrics make all the difference when it's hot outside...and this is a new one for me in the summer...but I really like it!

Now let's go see what JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE is wearing to stay cool...and look cool.

SO SLIMMING ANKLE PANT (only petites left online)

Have a wonderful start to your week!
