Hit Your Style Sweet Spot in Your Retirement Community or Neighborhood

Welcome to a new collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us…the grandmothers, the professionals, the retirees, the volunteers… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be and we hope to encourage you with specific, step-by-step guidelines right here every Sunday.  We would like to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence!
Each Sunday, we will bring to you a scenario we face each week and show you our step-by-step process as we decide what to wear…you will see on our individual blogs how we handle the challenge and seek our personal sweet spot for the day!
We are walking into new territory this week.  Recently, we asked readers what you would like to see discussed here and heard from many. One of the survey takers said she recently moved into a retirement community and was feeling a little out of place because the other women residents dressed very nice there.

This challenge required Jennifer and I both to share empathy and think what we might do if we lived in such a place...which I probably will someday!

For me, there is very little I would do different.  Here is what I recommend:

1.  Always dress for yourself and dress to look and feel your best every day.  It affects your joy and your overall attitude.  The word retirement is not a license for frumpy...far from it, it is a license for fun! Though the other ladies look nice, don't dress for them...dress for you!  I submit retirement will be a more joyful time if you are dressing each day "to live" life to it's fullest.  You just never know what opportunities will come your way.

2. Make sure you have a wardrobe of strong neutral foundations...like the METRO CROPPED LEGGINGS I am wearing above. I cuffed them up to create  the "boyfriend" style. Then if you are invited over for dinner, or to play Bunko, or go to a movie, you can just toss on a nice blouse or a fun tunic like this one.  In fact, SOFT SURROUNDINGS is the perfect place for a new retirement community wardrobe with many beautiful, easy selections to fit each occasion.  This top is called the STANDOUT SHIRT and is presently not on their website...as soon as it hits the site I will tweet it out!  I like a casual look which says I am approachable and happy.

3. If attending a neighborhood or homeowner's meeting, you need to have some pieces which communicate...take me seriously...I am intelligent and strong.  Here I threw a vintage Ralph Lauren Blazer on over my jeans.

I found this one...brand new...with the over $300 price tag still on it...at our local GOODWILL SA.  In other words, you can find some great pieces for amazing prices at thrift and consignment shops.

A working retirement wardrobe is one of separates which are constantly inter-changeable and give you the appearance of many different looks. They make it easy to grab something at a moments notice and look your best.

I really would not do anything very different from what I currently do. However, since the closet space might be smaller, I would have a few purposeful neutral foundation pieces of pants, jeans, leggings, and skirts with several great fitting tops which are fun; and a couple of dresses as needed for events.  All of my pieces would send the messages I desire to send at this time of my life!  You can be retired and shine every time you enter a room or event and, yet, be in simple wear.  Now, let's go see what JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE is wearing!

5 Favorite Eye Creams for Women Over 50

That waterfall says it all...skincare for women over 50 is all about hydration!  In the past year, I have been asked to test many eye creams.  I looked for products which minimized the wrinkles, smoothed the puffiness, brightened the eye area....and, yes, brought the waterfall of hydration to my eyes!  Five stood out among the crowd and I am pleased to recommend them.  All worked really well on these 62-year-old eyes...
First, I really like the Decleor Prolagene Lift Eye Cream...it's strength...the wrinkles and smoothing all around the area.  Love this entire skincare line.
Second...EYE DEW BY ARCONA...by the far the best brightner in an eye cream, I have seen.  And is excellent to lighten the dark circles...
If you want a youthful glow, this is your product.
Third, AMARTE EYE CREAM at SOFT SURROUNDINGS is an excellent hydrating eye cream with Retinol.  It's strength is smoothing the wrinkles.  And the first of three favorites found at Soft Surroundings.
The OSMOTICS EYE SURGERY is a lifting and firming serum..and you can tell, I have almost used the entire bottle.  Excellent overall product.

Finally, the VenEffect Anti-Aging Eye Treatment is excellent for overall care, but it's definite strength is to decrease the puffiness...works well.  (The only drawback is my camera does not like the bottle...I could not get it to focus on it!) If you are near a Soft Surroundings STORE, make an appointment with the beauty specialist and go try the last three on your face to see what you think.

I do not believe you can go wrong with any of the five and highly recommend them....I hope all of you will have a

Fantastic Friday!

Career Reinvention: Entering New Phase + The Blog Hop!

2016 is in full swing and for me brings many new challenges with the career reinvention.  This is my first year completely on my own with self-employment, and I am constantly learning and tweaking.  When you dive into something new after age sixty, there has to be a huge learning curve...
1. Flexibility...it is a must.  I have to be willing to do a variety of different jobs and not attempt to shove it all into one small box.
2. Perseverance...the year started with small surgery, and taxes due.  But, I must keep going on...
3. One day At A Time...If I only concentrate on making this one day successful, then I don't worry about the future and get discouraged.

4. Focus...while flexibility is important, I must also make sure I focus on my business, strengths, and experience.  I cannot allow myself to chase rabbits on other trails and which might cause the main business to suffer. I also need to focus on learning more and staying educated.
5. Family...Now that the business is ME, I have to make sure I shut it down every day (physically and mentally) and give my family priority time.  I cannot allow those relationships to suffer in the pursuit of financial security.

Finally, I must be frugal and wise with fashion choices.  I may be self employed and currently working mostly at home, but, I still want to dress well every day because no one knows what the day will bring.  I found this Chico's jacket at a wonderful re-sale shop in our area called CLOTHES MENTOR. All other pieces have been in my wardrobe for a while. One great piece purchased from re-sale/consignment can keep the wardrobe fresh for less.

I hope to encourage more of you that career reinvention is possible later in life...not necessarily easy, but possible.  Now, please go enjoy the wonderful blogs of the Thursday Blog Hop!!

Enjoy each moment of this day!

Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: What to Wear to An Art Museum

With so many experiencing very cold weather, it just might be the perfect time to visit your museums!  We asked a group of friends on Friday what they like to wear to the art museum and top of the list were comfortable shoes!  I agree...and usually wear a pair of ballet flats.

There is no better place than an art museum to feed our creativity and bring inspiration.

I guess it is the "artist" in me which likes to dress accordingly when I go...with a little creative flair. Somehow, I feel more connected to all that is around me....plus, it is fun.

Today, Jennifer and I are both bringing to you styles from ARTFUL HOME, a place where real artists design and create the clothing just for us.

Artful Home introduced me to artist and designer, CYNTHIA ASHBY, and I am so impressed with her work.  It is unique, comfortable, stylish, wearable art. She says she designs for the woman who is "one perpetual treasure hunt."  That's me!

Her FLOOD JACKET gives me all the creativity I desire and fits within my personal style and my current wardrobe...with a standout, statement piece.  Then I can add my own creative touch...

Just the right accessories will personalize a look, and help clothe me for a day at the art museum.  This would be exactly what I would want to wear.

Artful Home is the place for investment, personal dressing at it's best.  Check it out...and do not forget to check their WINTER COLLECTION and APPAREL SALE PRICES.  Oh yes, and the comfortable SHOES.

Also, remember almost all of the top museums have a fun cafe or restaurant and it is always good to look our best when joining the crowd for a meal!  I don't mind being the visible standout piece in the room!

Thanks to those who filled out our survey.  We received some excellent ideas for this series and we will be implementing them...so watch for your idea to appear!

Let's go see what JENNIFER AT A WELL STYLED LIFE is wearing to the museum!

Also, enjoy my ARTFUL HOME STYLE PINTEREST BOARD.

Perfect Time for Healthy Chili!

Can you hear the music from Rocky playing?? I am mentally running up those stairs and trying to get back into my good health routine post-sinus-surgery!  This healthy crockpot chili was perfect for my family this week...especially during the colder weather!
It is ridiculously easy!  First, on the bottom of the crockpot, put one chopped red onion, one one half cup of mixed, chopped yellow, red, and green peppers; and two large minced garlic cloves.

Next layer, one pound ground turkey (it can be frozen); two tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce; three healthy tablespoons of FIESTA CHILI SEASONING MIX FROM RIGHT HERE IN SAN ANTONIO!.

Next layers: (I use low sodium on canned products)
1 can of kidney beans
1 can of pinto beans
1 can of chopped green chilis (I like Hatch chilis, mild)
1 vacuum packed can of Southwestern Corn
2 cans of chopped tomatoes

Cook slow overnight; or while you work.

Colorful food and colorful time of year!  Scoop up a big bowl at sunset!

Make sure you return on Sunday for another edition of Hit Your Style Sweet Spot...Jennifer and I plan to go to an art museum!  See you then....

Happy Saturday!!

Concerts and Creativity...With a Blog Hop On the Side!

I am so excited it is Thursday and I am returning as a co-hostess for Katie's Thursday Blog Hop!  Katie was so sweet to allow me a short sabbatical ...and I am thrilled to return!  I am also excited about today, because it is Mr. B's birthday and we are headed out for a good time singing Beatles music along the way!
I will be visible and dramatic re-living those tunes with the LIVERPOOL LEGENDS and smiling on the dance floor.  Today, I am also pleased to introduce you to a new line which celebrates true artists in the fashion industry...ARTFUL HOME.  Every now and then I love a dramatic piece to reflect the creative side of me and Artful Home more than delivers that dramatic flair.
This is the SWALLOWTAIL TUNIC, hand made by artist MICHAEL KANE.  The garment is not even made until you order it.  He hand-dyed this product just for me...silk chiffon created with a technique called shibori from Japan.

The ARTFUL HOME WINTER COLLECTION is stunning with unique, top quality artistic, dramatic selections some of you will love! You can literally wear your art in special ways not seen mass produced at a mall.

I know there are ladies out there who have a strong neutral foundation in your wardrobe, so all you do is invest in special, statement pieces.  Please spend some time on the website...and the sale selection as well...for those special pieces. They are amazing. Also, see my favorite selections on my ARTFUL HOME STYLE PINTEREST BOARD.  After you visit there, make sure and return here for the great reading in the best blog hop around....I will be humming selections from Norwegian Wood as I get ready for the fun...see you next week!

5 Skincare Decisions I Make Every Day with Great Results

It's easy while going through an illness which requires surgery, to only focus on the negative messages.  However, this is the first time I entered a hospital and came out mentally feeling better about me... due to my skincare decisions.

Two members of the staff (without prompting) were amazed at my skin texture at 62! First of all, they insisted that I wasn't the age on the chart...then they wanted to know what I did to keep my skin looking healthy and glowing.  I answered the question this way:

Here are the things I have done daily for my skincare over the last eight months:

1. Drink larger quantities of water
2. Take a wonderful supplement called Juice Plus

3. Be mindful of healthy food choices
4. Care for my skin properly twice a day
5.  Use Laguna Naturals Vitamin C Serum in the morning...this is the only brand I use faithfully every day!

I have written about this serum before and how much I love it...because I see instant results with it. So does my esthetician...she says keep using it...my skin looks plump, young and healthy!  And get excited...Laguna Naturals Vitamin C Serum is running a special...so take advantage while you can...only until midnight Friday, January 22.   It is worth it...and gets the medical personnel talking about how great you look... even in pre-op!

This is a two for one special! Go to PURCHASE HERE, and you must put two bottles in your shopping cart; then use the promo code feelin40, and at checkout you will only be charged for one.  Remember, put two in your cart and use the code in order to get two for one!

Act now!  This gives you two bottles to begin a daily regimen like I do!

These are the few things I know I do consistently and I also know it makes a difference to stay faithful to proven success!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!!
