Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: Stylish Flats, Fantastic not Frumpy for Fashion over 50

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence

There are many who believe a woman cannot look stylish in flats. The believe women over 50 in flats look old and frumpy.   I beg to disagree!  Unfortunately, aging cannot be stopped…there is really no anti-aging anything.  Part of that journey is dealing with challenges which pop up along the way.

For me, one of my challenges is what I call “funky feet!”  From bunion surgery, to hammer toes, to callouses, I deal with all types of foot pain and have been told point blank by doctors…do not wear heels!

I have made a determined choice to not allow this to steal my joy.  Rather, I am going to own it and have fun with flats…there are so many stylish choices and I believe you can look just as good in a flat as in a heel.  Flats are not old…are not frumpy…and are not ugly.

I have a friend in her 60s and she wears heels almost every day, I am happy for her she can do that; however, I am not going to get depressed or not put effort into my style, because I cannot do the same.  I can be confident, look great, and, yes, even own the room in my flats.  This is where you start with how to look stylish in flats…with your attitude and confidence level.   I wear them with everything…and it works!

If you can wear heels, that is awesome, but do not put down those of us who must wear flats at a certain age.  Do not call us frumpy….we are fabulous!

How do you feel about flats?

Let’s go see how JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE is wearing her flats…then, check out some of the fun selections on the market right now!

Have a wonderful week!

  1. Preach it, Sister! Heels are lovely and sexy but not for this old gal. I value my feet and hip bones more than that. There are so many fun flats out there…I wish women would stop wearing athletic shoes everywhere…that's my soapbox for the day…ha!

  2. I actually feel younger right now in my flats with all my over 60 issues because I feel like I have a handle on my style and what makes me feel confident and modern. I love my flats as part of that overall picture. Thanks Donna!

  3. I admit to wearing mostly heels. Lately I have been looking more at flats, and do like the pointy toe styles for work. I have not taken the plunge with dresses which I do wear most days. I did find some cute plaid ones yesterday that will be great with jeans. YOU can certainly pull off the look and do look professional!

  4. I am jealous you can wear heels, if I could I would be right there with you. I just will not accept when some say flats are frumpy. Thanks for the kind words, Karen.

  5. I can't wear real flats. I need a bit of a heel. Funny I can't wear high heels or even a 2 inch heel. But ½ inch or maybe a 1 inch shoe and my feet are happy and I am ready for style! Flats are not Frumpy.

  6. I love flats! And now there are SO many stylish and comfortable ones available. What are the ones in 3rd image down: the brown with wide black insert???

  7. I've never really worn heels because I am pretty tall, but now that my kids are taller than me, I am actually starting to wear them more! I like the look of wedges, especially during the summer and have found some really comfortable ones. But I love that there are so many fun (and comfy!) choices in flats now as well. I need to break away from my basic colors, though, and try out some of the ones you have above like the red and the print!

  8. I have friends whose doctors have recommended they wear wedges. But mine said flats…our feet are all so different and funny as we age. I envy those like you who can wear a small heel. Thanks!!
