Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: Necklace Considerations for Women Over 50

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence

Today, Jennifer and I are discussing accessories…but I decided to  focus on necklaces.    There are very few links in this post, because these have been in my wardrobe for a long time…but I picked some new favs at the end.

Necklaces have gone from my second favorite accessory to my favorite…taking over a scarf-love I had for many years.  But, now I prefer a necklace and if you follow my blog, you know I love them!

I am 5’8″ and am able to wear bold, statement necklaces like the MARIE NECKLACE above. I like how they add the creative, fun touch to my outfits and draw the eye to where I would like it to go!

I do have to be careful with the length…sometimes the very long ones will accentuate the tummy…when I do not want the eye to go there…Oh that pesky tire in the middle.

However, when I have a garment which hides the “tire” then a long necklace will elongate and slim my look.

Such as the necklace in the picture below….

I purchase necklaces everywhere…from thrift, consignment, to the actual stores.  Sometimes the piece is worth it to splurge…such as the necklace above.  I have worn it so often that the cost per wear is very low…and I still receive compliments every time it is worn.

Where do the majority of my necklaces come from?

Easily, Chicos!  I love their jewelry and I have paid from full price to deep discounts for it.  Make sure you are a Passport Member for more discounts.

I keep most of my necklaces in zip lock bags in a huge hatbox.  There is probably a better way, but this seems to work.  Every now and then I go through the box to see what I have not worn in awhile.

A select few hang on the rack pictured at the top of the post.

So, how bold to you go?  Do you like a bold statement piece or a quite, chic, classic statement?  Or, like me, do you like both?  Then, let’s go see what JENNIFER OF A WELL STYLED LIFE has to say about accessories as she reports from Iceland!

Make sure you join me on Tuesday for a huge, special announcement!

Disclaimer:  There are a couple of necklaces featured in this post I was given by the brand.  But the words are my own.

Keep Smiling!

Below are my favorites currently at Chicos…I do already own a couple of them!

  1. Your necklaces are very cool. I like both statement and understated, depending on what I'm wearing. Also, in the summer I find I go lighter. I am still big on scarves too, which are similar to necklaces to me. I made a storage system on my closet wall. Got some pretty trim molding, spaced it out on the wall, then staggered brushed nickel upholstery tacks, allowing the necklaces to hang without becoming tangled. It is pretty to look at and covers a lot of area on the wall! I can see them all at a glance and they are decorative -bonus!

  2. I always enjoy seeing your bold necklaces! I have a fabric-covered bulletin board in my closet with pushpins to hold twenty or so of my most-worn necklaces. Sometimes I start with a necklace to inspire my outfit!

  3. Love all your necklaces…can't pick a favorite. Your height is an advantage to wearing bolder necklaces. Miss Karen and Miss Tricia both have fabulous storage ideas.

  4. I need to experiment more with this. I wear the same tiny delicate diamond every day – – but I am so very intrigued by both the Larriet length and the statement style.

  5. I love statement necklaces; my favorite piece of jewelry! Well, large bracelets are right up there. I'm only 5'4" but mostly wear shorter versions. I like chokers as well. Anthropologie is my favorite…very pricey but they DO go on sale. There is a store in Wash., D.C. and now other cities called Loulou http://loulouboutiques.com They have been a favorite source for my daughter and now for me!

  6. What timing…I seem to be on a necklace binge lately–I've bought five in just the last few weeks, and for just the reasons you mention (especially drawing the eye to where I want it to go, which is away from my saggy neck!). I also appreciate your idea about how to store them (in plastic baggies)…mine are getting all jumbled up in a drawer. I'm definitely leaning toward the statement necklaces, and found a wonderful shop in downtown Portland (Maine) that imports beaded pieces that are great fun and very inexpensive.

  7. Wow! Some of those necklaces are absolutely breathtaking! I love the one that looks like quartz spikes and rough stones. Beautiful!
