Essential Tips for Improving Your Skin in Your 50s

A Sponsored Post
A
turning point for many women (thanks largely in part to a change in hormones)
is their 50’s. And a very important key point to communicate is this: you are not alone, and you can still achieve a beautiful complexion. Aging is a
normal part of life, and while there are many ways we can reduce the signs,
there is not a way to absolutely prevent it. Never forget that you are
beautiful, aging and all. The goal isn’t to remain 30 forever; it is to simply keep your skin healthy, nourished, and happy. And I want to share some of fabulous tips for doing just
that in your 50’s!
Tip #1: Get Your Beauty Sleep. If you’ve spent the last 50
years catching less than 8 hours of sleep per night, it is time to re-evaluate
your sleeping habits. Your skin actually experiences the most healing while you
sleep, which is why it is so important to get enough of it. Don’t be afraid of
setting a bed time if you know you need to be awake at a certain hour, and be
sure to take advantage of a good, targeted, night time skin treatment while you rest!
Tip #2: Don’t Skimp on
Exercise.
This
is critical, both for your skin, and for your general health. Even if it means
taking 30 minutes to enjoy a brisk walk each day, get outside and enjoy a
little bit of exercise. This will help to increase your blood circulation, which
is stimulating for your skin (yes, even the skin on your face).
Tip #3: Moisturize. Moisturize.
Moisturize.
This
applies to all skin types, yes, even you oily ladies! Your skin tends to lose a
lot of it’s elasticity in your 40’s and 50’s, so it is essential to keep your
skin plumped up and healthy by keeping it happy and hydrated! If you can find
something that is hydrated, and
contains a powerhouse anti-aging ingredient (such as retinol or glycolic acid),
then even better! This will help your skin look younger and healthier for
longer.
Tip #4: Go Beyond Your Chin. This is a practice that can be
utilized at any age, but is especially essential in your 50’s. Much like the
skin on your face, the skin on your neck and chest are no stranger to the tests
of time. Extending your skin care products down to cover these areas will help
to deliver the same benefits you are getting on your face. You can also find
many treatments that target this area for fabulous prevention, and even
age-reversing results.
Tip #5: Slather on the SPF. It is never too late to start
wearing sunscreen. Yes, even if you have gone your entire life up until this point
without it, it is still something that will benefit you moving forward.
Sunscreen is key in the prevention of skin cancer, and can help to prevent
future fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots. There are many formulas that
incorporate both SPF protection and anti-aging benefits, so there really is no
excuse not to rock sun protection.
Tip #6: Try a Creamy Cleanser
Instead.
Remember
how I mentioned that keeping your skin moisturized is key? Well, many
cleansers, though wonderful, can strip you skin of essential hydration. A good
indicator is this: if you face feels at all tight or itchy after you cleanse,
it is time to switch to something more hydrating. And if you aren’t getting
tight or itchy, but wish to enjoy more moisture in your skin, a creamy cleanser
is a wonderful way to go. These formulas will help to keep your skin hydrated
while removing dirt, oil, and other impurities from the surface of your skin.

Tip #7: Find a Regimen You will Love and Use. In our younger years, it can be easy to do a
quick 1-2 with a cleanser and a moisturizer. But as we age, it is important to
find different puzzle pieces that will help to keep our skin looking full and
healthy. Key players in this typically include: a good cleanser, a good serum,
a fantastic eye cream, a good moisturizer, and a good SPF. Having an
exfoliating treatment and nourishing mask on-hand are also wonderful in aiding
against the signs of aging.

  1. Good tips Pam! I'm not looking for perfection, just to look my best and be healthy heading into this stage of life. I really need to focus on the exercise component. I'm one of those who have never enjoyed it and completely burned myself out on a fitness walking program. My friend at work and I are going to start walking outside on our lunch hour, and that should point me in the right direction!

  2. GOOD TO KNOW I am doing it all BUT WALKING!WHY CAN I NOT GET OUTSIDE AND WALK?I do go to PILATES four times a week but I alittle romp around THE HOOD would be GOOD TOO!I have to say MY favorite part of the DAY is cleansing and moisturizing ………..I DO SEE A DIFFERENCE!

  3. So much good advice Pam! Another I do is hydrate by drinking lots of water, infused with berries, lemon or even cucumbers!
