Hit Your Style Sweet Spot: Women Over 50 Fashion at the Airport

Welcome to a fun collaboration with Jennifer of A Well Styled Life and Pam of over50feeling40.  We desire for all of us… the fabulous women over 50 …to look and feel our best each and every day.  After years of blogging for this audience, we have heard from so many of you about your discouragement and despondency when you look in the mirror every morning.  But, we both know just how transformative style can be, and hope to encourage you right here each week.  We want to see all of us empowered with strength, joy, and confidence.

Spring Break…warmer weather…summer approaching… winter fatigue…it is that time of year when many are ready to hit the road! I do agree with my partner, Jennifer Connolly, some of the shabbiest dressing I have seen lately is at the airport!  This post is meant to give ideas for how to up your style for the airport only.  Here is a typical outfit I would wear to the airport during cooler weather.

The tailored MICHAEL KORS BOYFRIEND BLAZERjust gives a casual style a bump.  It provides just enough for entering and exiting the plane in cooler weather.  But, for warmer times, I tend to get hot on planes, so here is what I would consider….

1. Comfort does not mean sloppy.  There are so many comfortable, stylish garments.
2. Attention to fabrics can mean you look good, do not wrinkle, and remain appropriate for most climates.  This IC from DILLARDS jacket feels like a crinkly crepe, but is 100% polyester.  It looks great, keeps its shape, and does not wrinkle. The design of this jacket is very flattering for my curves!  The pants are rayon/nylon/spandex and from ELIZABETH’S BOUTIQUE IN SAN ANTONIO I wear these a lot…again, they are cool, comfortable, don’t wrinkle and look way better than a yoga pant.
3. Comfort shoes do not have to be sneakers. These are LUCKY BRAND FLATS FROM MACY’S.

4. Accessories…I do not wear much jewelry while traveling so that it does not catch on anything.  This statement jacket does not need any additions…it is a stand alone piece. Adding a necklace would be overkill.
5. When I am confident, I am comfortable.

I say this  often…you never know who you will sit next to in an airport lobby or on a plane.  I represent my brand now and am always looking for opportunity…yes, even at age 62! I do not want to miss an opportunity because I did not give my best that day.  Also, when I get off a plane ready for what is ahead…there is no need to rush to a hotel to dress.

Confidence is key for a successful day and trip!

Now, let’s go see what JENNIFER AT A WELL STYLED LIFE wore to the airport…she is actually on a vacation!

Have a great week!

  1. Both looks are great, but I am especially drawn to the warmer weather top. Love the colors and shape of it. This is worlds away from the sloppy looks you see at airports and the perfect example of how to dress comfortably for travel!

  2. I just posted a comment on Jennifer's site, so I won't repeat my favorite upgrade experience here, but your observation about we never know who we'll be sitting next to reminded me of the question I ask myself when deciding what to wear on the plane: How would I feel looking like this if I happened to find myself sitting next to [fill in the blank with favorite movie star — Richard Gere is a frequent favorite;-)]? The likelihood is remote (especially as I don't travel first class, but it does make me seriously reassess my outfit!

  3. Great look! I love the blazer, and the colors look amazing on you! You show so well that you can be comfortable yet stylish!

One thing I always take on an airplane is a big scarf. It can serve as a blanket or a pillow on the flight as well as an extra layer if it's a bit cooler at my destination.

  4. One of the blog readers approached me at the mall today, Karen, and said that she lost her luggage once on a trip and was so glad she had dressed nice for the flight. She had to go straight to a dinner in what she was wearing and it was quite awhile before her luggage showed up!

  5. I don't think I would be very cool if I saw Richard Gere next to me. I hope my outfit would make up for the nervousness! I would love to find out though how I would handle it! Thanks So much for the thought!

  6. I know a number of women who fly frequently for business. These suggestions will be just perfect for them. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  7. I know a number of women who fly frequently on business – these suggestions will be of much interest to them. Shared! Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  8. I hope all of us will practice looking our best at the airport…even if retired. It just makes the day and the trip better. Thanks for sharing Alana!

  9. Ever since I let my hair go natural (it's silver and dark gray), it's boosted my awareness and excitement about clothing, and color is definitely going to be big for me. If you see me at BAM Vegas, I'll be the one in the floaty tangerine top with matching sandals! Your blog has reignited my enthusiasm for finding the sweet spot where comfort and attractiveness meet. Thanks!

  10. you look lovely Pam – I now think about you every time I pop down to the shops and make sure I don't look scruffy (I think I'm now forever in WWPW mode – what would Pam wear?) x

  11. Dark colors or a pattern like you model are good choices for plane travel. I have had a flight attendant spill a drink on me and have done it to myself. Since these occurrences, I am always aware to never wear white or easily stainable fabrics or colors on a plane.

  12. I make it a point to look pulled together where ever I go. Like you said, I represent my brand. I've been recognized by people who follow my blog. I was thankful I was dressed to please. Great airport idea.

  13. I do prefer to wear some type of sock when traveling by air because they do make you take off your shoes before you go thru the detector. It's been documented that there is an occurrence of contracting a foot fungus from fellow travelers. I'm just a germ conscience person. Of course there isn't any excuse for looking like a slob. Gone are the days when one would dress up for air travel I suppose.

  14. I've just found your blog and am enjoying reading through your posts. As I'm moving back to Houston from Europe at the end of the summer, I'm especially grateful to find a blogger who has to deal with the extreme heat AND chilly air conditioning! Its been a long time since I had to deal with these extremes but I am looking forward to packing away my winter clothes and boots for a while.

Most of my plane travel is fairly long haul (back and forth to Europe and Houston to PNW, so I wondered if you had any recommendations for trousers that stretch and don't cut in at the waist? Thank you.

  15. You are very right, people at the airport can be very sloppy. Or highly overdressed (in a tight dress with towering heels). You look terrific, especially in that kimono. My word, that is a staple piece (that is how you call something which you can use over and over again, right?). I love it. The design, the pattern. The fact it doesn't wrinkle either is a big plus.
