Two cute boys...One exhausted grandma!

The memories flood back immediately…just how much work it is when two little ones are in the house.  The new baby is not even a week old and it has taken three of us to replace the hands of one daddy, back working overseas.  There literally is no time for anything but our toddler grandson and his new brother.  Mommy is still recovering. Toddler brother is overwhelmed with so many changes.
My husband spent all day yesterday downtown with the baby and our daughter navigating a passport so they can travel in a couple of weeks to their new home.  The passport office workers said he was the smallest one they had ever accommodated.
Sleeping has, for the most part, stopped…eating my healthy diet meal plan, stopped…morning exercise, stopped…and wouldn’t you know it…when things are the craziest, and I feel like I look my worst,  other exciting opportunities show up on the horizon…
You will have to come back tomorrow.  For now, I hear a newborn beginning to stir…
If you are a grandmother who helps out regularly with the kids, I highly respect you…and your energy levels.   Any advice?

Happy Saturday, all !

5 Considerations before Leaving the House

Unfortunately, this sweatshirt I found on PINTEREST communicates how we often dress during the weekend, retirement, or "off hours." (Not really Mondays)

Our clothing choices can send the same message as the shirt... without being quite this direct.  Join me today on MIDLIFE BOULEVARD to discuss the importance of our casual wear choices.

Let's go talk in the

Then have a joyful Tuesday!

Ankle boots, Cashmere, and 50,000 Tacos!

Hi everyone...hope you are all well... despite the cold, wet weather in some areas of the country!  This week is when San Antonio hosts the largest free breakfast in the world.  Friday will be the 37th Annual Cowboy Breakfast which officially kicks off rodeo season.
If I were to gather with the 50,000 cowboys and cowgirls seeking hot, strong coffee and free tacos, I would probably wear this beautiful chocolate brown, CATHERINE ROBINSON CASHMERE CAPE, my INC jeans from Macys, and these amazing ANKLE BOOTIES!
Aren't they gorgeous?  I swooned when I opened the box from ANTELOPE SHOES and know I will wear these often.
Check out their shoes and boots HERE AT ANTELOPE SHOES!

There is nothing like luxurious cashmere, gorgeous leather, and tacos, tacos, tacos for a traditional winter event.

The pictures below are from our local newspaper, The San Antonio Express News, from last year's Cowboy Breakfast.

One Small Step of Courage

I promised to report back when I take steps of courage this year... since that is my word for 2015.
This is a tiny one; yet, a big one for me.  I have never been a dark lip color lady; however, every time a get my makeup done for a special event the makeup artist puts darker colors on me.  So, I decided to take the plunge and start wearing a darker color every day to see what I think about it.
The reviews have been great!  Co-workers and friends seem to think I changed my whole makeup routine when the only thing changed is the lip and they like it!

I started with this BOBBI BROWN LIPSTICK in the color blackberry.  If you purchase at Macy's right now, it comes with a free gift.

Small steps of courage will lead to bigger ones!  Has anyone else changed up your makeup for a new year.  Visibility is confidence building...take the plunge! Oh yes, I will see you later today when I join the fashionable group from Patti's Visible Monday!

Have a beautiful Sunday!

My Absolute Favorite Skincare Product

For over a year, I have told you about IOMA-PARIS skincare line.  While I love all of the products I use, my absolute favorite is the ANTI-WRINKLE, antioxidant mask!

The results are immediate and amazing reducing fine lines and wrinkles.   This mask soaks into your skin so quickly and is perfect to sleep in...that's right, I said to sleep in.  Also,  I put it under and around my eyes with excellent results and it is not harsh at all for the eye area. The rich vitamins just make your skin glow because it nourishes so deeply.  It is worth every penny and lasts a long time.  I usually do this twice a week.

You can order it from Saks Fifth Avenue online, HERE....or in one of the six Saks locations found HERE.

In fact, this is a perfect time to drop by one of the six SAKS which have the IOMA sphere at their counter...get a skin evaluation which will blow you away.

My skin is so happy with all of my IOMA-Paris products and I love the comments!  San Antonio, call Amelia at 210-591-3476 and set up an appointment.

Happy Saturday...be warm!

I MATTER Over 50 and Beyond...Plus the Thursday Blog Hop!

Sometimes, later in life, we just need a boost to help restore our confidence and for an I MATTER reminder. This is exactly what Anne Reizer's new book, Beautiful Encore: Makeovers for Mature Women, does.  I asked Anne to tell us why the message, I MATTER, is important later in life:

"Confidence is illumination for the mature woman.  It sets her apart.  It is the vital ingredient for successful maturity .

A very basic step in either adding to or regaining our confidence is taking adequate care with our physical presentation. " Looking good is not a superficial endeavor!  It leads to engagement and success in other facets of your life.......it helps us project confidence and reinforces how we want to be perceived."  Many mature women seem to default to a form of simplicity in their appearance, which they know is not working... "When appearance becomes an afterthought, it quickly becomes no thought."

The importance of personal presentation-  our visual language- is not lost on women. We intuitively know that when we have taken time with our exterior, people are interested in what we are about.  We  feel stronger, stand taller and are more apt to join in a social occasion.  In our mature years we are too seasoned to think that life is only ups and never downs- but one of the fastest ways to regain a positive attitude is use our brains and discipline to look our best.

Looking our best is not simply makeup and hair:  it is healthy living , a capacity for joy.  But periodically, we need to return to basics and take an honest look and not default to nonworking simplicity.

BEAUTIFUL ENCORE: MAKEOVERS FOR MATURE WOMEN is a book to inspire women over 50 that 'looking sensational' is within reach .  Each of the 27 models let talented hair and makeup technicians change their outdated looks.  Afterwards they sparkle! The  eleven health and beauty  articles, written by Dr.s and professionals, focus on the needs of women past 50."

These women are very inspirational (see one before and after picture above).  It is a book about specifics from healthcare to wardrobe care.  One of the ladies said this,
"For me, a realistic intention for aging gracefully is a positive, grateful, forward-thinking approach to life and a belief in the inherent worth and dignity for all people."

The women in this book understand in order to do more, you must begin with I MATTER.  Order Anne's book HERE.  Then go enjoy all of the blogs of the Thursday Blog Hop!

Keep Smiling!

Meet the Stone Whisperer and Win One Creation! Plus Fashion Flash!

This week I am so pleased to introduce you to jewelry designer, Carole Weaks, called by some... the stone whisperer!   She has a powerful story of healing which has culminated in her work, her passion, at age 72.  I am going to let Carole tell you her story in her own words (unfortunately, I had to edit this down, but the heart of her story is here):
“It has been nothing but a love affair with art since I started.  I got sober 27 years ago and that was when I discovered that I am an artist. I was very sick back then…..totally broken emotionally, physically and mentally. I weighed only 103 and most people didn’t think I would live for even a year.  I was racked with pain, both mentally and physically, and was suicidal for about 10 years. . I had been sick with fibromyalgia since I was around 23, but no one knew anything about that…it had no name, nor was it even acknowledge as a disease….doctors told me I was a hypochondriac. I felt so alone and really had begun to think I was crazy, too….as people in my family told me that frequently. I had just started the divorce process when this occurred. And he had been my knight in shining armor for a long time, so that didn’t help how I was feeling.

A few years before getting sober I had read in “The Road Less Travelled”, that a person’s mental illness was relative to the distance between them and their creator. It was then that I decided to start on a spiritual path.  I really thought I was crazy. Getting sober was the beginning of the path. I was blessed to get sober in Newport Beach, close to Laguna Beach where I met up with a lot of “Sensitives”, who were also sober, and many of whom were artists.

They kept telling me I was an artist and that there was nothing wrong with me except that I was a “Sensitive” and that was why I felt, heard and knew things others didn’t understand.  They also told me I was an artist and…to the degree I loved something, was the ability that I could do the very thing.  I chose to believe them and signed up to take a class in drawing.

I discovered that for the 4 hours I drew in that class…..I had 4 hours free of physical pain. Being a colorist at heart,  I  didn’t care for the starkness of  charcoal and white that drawing afforded….so I began with watercolors, and quickly moved on to oils.  I had found my artist within. One of the first paintings that I sold, was bought for over $1,500.  I was a bit overwhelmed by the creative energy that was waiting to be unleashed and had no idea of where it was coming from. It was as though I had uncovered a renaissance woman, and she had to be satiated with constant creativity. Painting was my thing at the time and I quickly moved into galleries. I painted every day, and finally after a few years, I started healing emotionally, mentally, and physically.

I must admit though, that painting was very difficult for me…I never felt totally at ease with it….like something was missing….and there was always a brush between me and my creations.

It was during that time that my grandmother, who had died of childbirth when my mom was 7, came to me in meditation.  She told me that she was the other artist in my family of origin, but she never had been able to express herself creatively before she died. She said that she was expressing through me and we were doing it together.  Then I began to realize that was that force that I felt inside of me pushing me deeper on my creative path. She helped me heal my relationship with my alcoholic Mom, with whom I had never had a relationship with. I painted my heart out for the whole period that I lived in California. But I always had to paint with my little group….never able to paint alone at home.

Then I moved up here to the Seattle area and stopped painting altogether. I went back to writing and photography which had been my other outlets.  I also moved to Whidbey Island where I was totally and completely isolated from the world. That was 15 years ago this coming year….1999 in the fall.  I walked on the beaches alone and discovered all kinds of secrets that Nature held for me….including all kinds of beautiful stones on the beaches there.

When I moved back to the mainland, I was visiting my daughter and she taught me how to create jewelry with beads. That was the only the beginning for me. I started doing real estate as my job, and created in my spare time.  I was in heaven working with beautiful gemstones and metals.  But it wasn’t until one day about five years ago that someone came in my home and stole every single piece that I had designed for the last 40 years….all was gone in one fell swoop!

Now, I am a person who believes that there was a gift in everything and every experience that comes to me. So instead of sitting in a pity party, asking “Why Me”, I decided to ask my Higher Power, “Please show me the give in this experience.”  It was then that market fell apart, and my way of making a living had disappeared. My friends all told me that I should start selling some of the jewelry that I was making, to help make ends meet.

I married my fashionista, who has always been a very integral part of me, to my little rock lover who had always had a rock altar in my house, and whoa…..together they were ready to go.  I had unleashed another renaissance woman, only this time it was even more powerful than before. I took classes to learn how to work with wire and metal, and more classes and workshops to learn how to design, cut and polish rocks and gemstones.  The duo was unstoppable….I just had to get out of the way.

This time there was nothing between me and my work….I could feel the stones and their energy and they told me what they wanted me to do with them.  One of my friends told me that I was the “Stone Whisperer,” and I love that name. It seemed so real to me, because I can hear them talking.  I don’t have to research much anymore, because it just keeps on coming to me from nowhere…..I had found my place as an artist! And it feels so good.

About a year after I started, it was a fourth of July, and I was home alone, so I decided to go over to my Rock Dealers house. She never goes anywhere, so I knew she would be home. She told me to look in the bucket across the room, that she had put a lot of ends and pieces into it.  It was then as I picked up the very first stone in the bucket…..my grandmother Loretta was staring at me from the top of the pile.

Ever since I started my new career of creating jewelry, I have felt like I am in heaven.  I can’t get enough of creating…..I create here in my home, all by myself, and I love it.  I breathe, eat and sleep it.  I think of it all the time, and it fills my heart and soul with positive energy….a lot of it coming from the stones I am sure.  So now, I am the “Stone Whisperer” who listens to the whispers of the stones, telling me what they want to look like, and what they want to be! And I get to see how what I create can bring so much joy to others.”

Now one of you will receive this beautiful Rosette necklace designed by Carole.
Each piece she makes is unique...unlike any other. I love how vibrant my necklace is....I thought a couple of co-workers would rip it off my neck if they could!!  She is also giving away this bracelet with TABLER PARTY OF TWO! Act Like A Success, Think Like A Success

I want you to know I am taking my New Year's resolution quite seriously.  I do plan to hold myself accountable to have more COURAGE this year...take a few risks...step out of my comfort zone.  I have a secret list of ideas for making COURAGE a reality.

So, when comedian Steve Harvey appeared on ABC's THE CHEW over my holiday break to discuss roads and roadblocks to success, I listened closely. He has written a new book, ACT LIKE A SUCCESS, THINK LIKE A SUCCESS.  It is not a typical comedian's script but what he learned while sleeping on the streets as a homeless adult to now being one of the top entertainers in the country who is paid very well for all of his endeavors.

Believe me, I do not desire to be an award winning television star...I wouldn't turn it down...but that is not my goal.  But, as an over 60 woman, I want to grab every remaining opportunity and experience life to it's fullest.  I wanted to see if I could learn from his book.  And I have.

Harvey writes, "I have seen too many smart, talented, gifted people stay in the same vehicle too long. If you notice you are working hard and smart, connected to a vehicle and clear on your vision, but every day you seem to move less and less, it's time to upgrade. It's time to take another class, join a new organization, or start a new business. Look, if you are committed to your gift, and you are growing and perfecting it, you will know when your gift is becoming too much for the vehicle."

I have been pondering that one for at least the last week.  His book gives homework to think through the principles.  He also writes...NO EXCUSES.  So, I really need to stop listening to those little voices which say YOU ARE TOO OLD TO GO FORWARD.

If you are interested in hearing more, then just go to this link...HERE  But, I will keep you up to date when something significant happens on my road to be COURAGEOUS and yes, SUCCESSFUL!

Have a fabulous Friday, all!

Yes, You Can Afford a Wardrobe Makeover, Now! Plus the Thursday Blog Hop!

Last week, we began to discuss how to get a wardrobe makeover going at the first of a new year!  I received three emails asking about money...what do I do when I need a new wardrobe and there is no money for a new wardrobe?"

In San Antonio, that means GOODWILL SA for me.  I find new, designer, amazing clothing at Goodwill...and January is one of the best months to go.  Many clean out and make end-of-year donations to get that all important tax receipt....so the stock is plentiful.

I like to go with wardrobe needs in mind.  This keeps me on track.  Last week, I went in search of boyfriend style/duster length jackets.  One I came home with is this denim jacket which I know can be worn all year.  I found it at the Bitters Road/Highway 281 N location.

I also brought home with tags still on, a navy blue duster with silver trim.  I am certain you will see this soon on the blog.  With great thrift stores like Goodwill, and so many clearance sales, there is no reason to stay in clothing which does not flatter your body or communicate the messages you desire.

I shop at Goodwill SA, because I MATTER, and our community matters. GOODWILL SA'S MISSION is to make sure they give back to our local community with job training and even assistance for veterans.

You matter as well...so go shop...don't wait. There are ways to make changes in your wardrobe affordable!

What To Wear To A Blogger Conference - Part 1

Meet the lovely Ines de la Fressange.  This is my example of something I might wear to a blogging conference.  Bloggers tend to be a bit more relaxed than many professions, so the discussion is a good one.

Many of us will attend the first national conference specifically designed for Midlife Bloggers and Beyond, BAM, in Nashville, March 6.  If you would like more information, just click on the BAM badge in the top of my sidebar.

For the next two weeks, I will discuss what to wear to such a conference.  This week on the MIDLIFE BOULEVARD I begin with a couple of thoughts before we get to specifics next week.

So, join me in the

First, Pink....Now, Lace from Chico's Black Label

I hope everyone is warm and toasty today!  I told you recently for reasons unknown, I suddenly like pink (when I haven't liked it before).  Now, CHICO'S BLACK LABEL has me liking lace...when I haven't liked it before!

I ordered this BLACK LABEL LACE KNIT BACK SHIRT recently after loving it on the Chico's online.

However, I am just getting adjusted to a new, smaller body and I do wish I had gone a size smaller.  These changes will take a little time getting accustomed to. I have ordered the larger sizes for a long, long time.

The BLACK LABEL designs have become my favorites from Chico's....they feature classic, very chic, creative selections.  This helps brighten a dreary day!
I do not know why I am suddenly liking trends previously hated, but it is fun! Never say never.

I am honestly on alert these days.  My son-in-law is overseas and my daughter is about to deliver grandchild number two.  She has begun the process!  And, I am the stand-in birth coach...so,

If I disappear for a little while...you will know why!
