Act Like A Success, Think Like A Success

I want you to know I am taking my New Year’s resolution quite seriously.  I do plan to hold myself accountable to have more COURAGE this year…take a few risks…step out of my comfort zone.  I have a secret list of ideas for making COURAGE a reality.

So, when comedian Steve Harvey appeared on ABC’s THE CHEW over my holiday break to discuss roads and roadblocks to success, I listened closely. He has written a new book, ACT LIKE A SUCCESS, THINK LIKE A SUCCESS.  It is not a typical comedian’s script but what he learned while sleeping on the streets as a homeless adult to now being one of the top entertainers in the country who is paid very well for all of his endeavors.

Believe me, I do not desire to be an award winning television star…I wouldn’t turn it down…but that is not my goal.  But, as an over 60 woman, I want to grab every remaining opportunity and experience life to it’s fullest.  I wanted to see if I could learn from his book.  And I have.

Harvey writes, “I have seen too many smart, talented, gifted people stay in the same vehicle too long. If you notice you are working hard and smart, connected to a vehicle and clear on your vision, but every day you seem to move less and less, it’s time to upgrade. It’s time to take another class, join a new organization, or start a new business. Look, if you are committed to your gift, and you are growing and perfecting it, you will know when your gift is becoming too much for the vehicle.”

I have been pondering that one for at least the last week.  His book gives homework to think through the principles.  He also writes…NO EXCUSES.  So, I really need to stop listening to those little voices which say YOU ARE TOO OLD TO GO FORWARD.

Have a fabulous Friday, all!

  1. So interesting. I was talking to another lady at work yesterday (over 60) and we were saying we felt 'too old to start over' when the rumors of still more terminations started again. While it is true that in the last two industries I have worked in that women over 60 have a MUCH more difficult time getting hired, it can be done. I think part of it at least is staying current in our thinking, our style of dress and staying active and involved. I'll have to check out this book!

  2. Sounds like something I need to definitely read! I love Steve Harvey he is so funny. We are all scared of what's around the corner but stopping before you get there just isn't an option…well unless there is a park bench and then you could just sit there but how much fun would that be!

  3. Pam this sounds like another book filled with good insight! Cannot wait to hear more of your adventures!

    Have a great weekend!

  4. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this book. I love books that motivate and give me something to think about. I will add this to my list of books to read.

  5. When I first started reading this post, I thought, "Oh no, another self-help book!" However, by the time I finished reading, I realized that we are often aided in thinking we are "too old to go forward". As women trying to reinvent ourselves after a certain age, we cannot appear to be that age. We are encouraged to keep our gray hair as much a secret as possible. We see more experienced women being passed over for younger applicants. Women of a certain age being forced into involuntary retirement and relegated to taking minimum wage jobs……and the list goes on. All of this takes a huge toll on our confidence, and before we know it, we begin to believe we are too old to go forward….so we settle! Being confident and believing in yourself is the true antidote to aging and achieving success at any age. We need to hold our heads high, define our strengths, and recognize the reality that we have much to offer. Good post! Angela Muller

  6. Thanks. I didn't realize that Steve Harvey came out with a new book. I like his attitude and trying new things is something I'm a fan of….even when it scares me!
