Jenny Craig: Something I Do For Me!

My journey with JENNY CRAIG is not just about weight loss...it is about changing years of bad habits and developing a healthy lifestyle which will be with me until the end!

A reader recently asked me how I do the diet and provide meals for my husband.  I actually live with my husband and youngest son who is in college, so there are three.

My answer is....I have hung up the aprons!
Perhaps that seems a bit harsh, but please understand, I have walked this walk for years.  I wish I had money for all of the diets I have begun and quit.

I quit because I kept cooking and for me cooking has been how I showed love to my family.  It also is something I love, so I tweak...and taste...and season...and taste...and make certain it is perfect in every way.

I failed so often and it usually happened during excuses made to serve the family, so this time I told the two men in my life...YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.  Since June, I think I have cooked maybe three times and I was feeling sorry for them.  But, you know, they are adults and they have survived.  Also, they go out to eat together more often and I really believe it has brought father and son closer.

I need for it to be this way for now.  Since I was sick, I have stalled a bit....but I will persevere. For health reasons, I must lose more weight.  It is my time...now or never!  So, these two guys are fine on their own until I feel like I have reached my goals...a healthy weight and changed habits for good.

Yes, I am going to cook holiday meals...but my goal is to be down by a total of 25 pounds when Thanksgiving gets here....okay, I put it on the record...now we will see if I do it!  Please ask questions when you have them...it helps me know what you are processing about these posts!  And thanks for hanging in there with me JENNY CRAIG.

Now, in honor of Halloween, I bring you a resident of my backyard...have a fun and safe evening everyone!

*I was provided a free trial program, and free Jenny’s Cuisine® items. Currently, I purchase their food at a special rate.   However, the opinions and writing are entirely my own.
Members following the Jenny Craig program, on average, lose 1-2 lbs per week

Renee Zellweger says I MATTER....and Katie's Thursday Blog Hop!

Wow, did you see the claws come out last week?? I do love working with and writing for women, but, let's face it, there are mean girls all around...not just in high school hallways. When actress Renee Zellweger appeared at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards with a perceived "new facial look," social and entertainment media went wild.

Suddenly, critics portrayed her as a washed up actress bowing to the pressure of Hollywood competition.  I am certain there were some (perhaps, fresh out of cosmetic surgery themselves) who were letting Renee have it for nipping and tucking. And actually we do not know for sure exactly what she did...if anything.  She was raked over the digital media coals.
But, later, Renee would tell reporters, this amazing phrase...”I’m glad.”  Glad people had noticed there was something different??
"I'm living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I'm thrilled that perhaps it shows," the actress told PEOPLE.  "My friends say I look peaceful."

Though the actress, 45, thinks the chatter around her looks "silly," she added that for the first time in a long time, she's learned to slow down and focus on herself. In her 30s, she explained, she "took on a schedule that is not realistically sustainable and didn't allow for taking care of myself. “Rather than stopping to recalibrate, I kept running until I was depleted and made bad choices about how to conceal the exhaustion," she said. "I was aware of the chaos and finally chose different things. “Now happily dating musician Doyle Bramhall and focusing on causes that matter to her, Zellweger, who recently participated in the Walk to Defeat ALS in L.A. in support of her friend, said she's in a new place in her life -- and it shows.” I did work that allows for being still, making a home, loving someone, learning new things, growing as a creative person and finally growing into myself," she said. "People don't know me [as] healthy for a while. ... Perhaps I look different. Who doesn't as they get older?! Ha. But I am different. I'm happy."
In other words, she picked up the I MATTER sign! And I applaud her.  I am here to encourage women to realize they matter…how they interpret that, and what they decide to do in response is their choice.  As it was Renee’s.
We should not sit here as judge and jury over what any woman does to make herself feel more confident, strong, healthy, and joyful. She obviously is feeling great about the direction she has taken.  Shame on the ones who called her names and judged her decisions....without even understanding specifically what those decisions were.

I choose to color my hair…but I respect and applaud those women my age who do not.  We each need to decide what helps us feel and look our best where we are right now.  You go Renee!  I support your decisions to say...

I MATTER!

San Antonio Shoemakers and a Serious Talk About Feet!

San Antonio Shoemakers (SAS) has taught me much recently and caused me to ponder how I look at my feet.
Let’s face it, fast fashion has done a huge disservice to our feet.  Of course, shoes are fun…creative…amazing accessories.  But, bottom line, ladies, we must be able to walk in them.  Luxury shoe lines have offered comfort and style…however, most often, at exorbitant prices.   Thus, we see women who walk to work in sneakers and carry stylish heels to put on in the office.   So, finally across the board in fashion, more and more women are living life in comfort shoes…flats, sneakers, brogues, loafers…the classic shoe styles offered in many ways.  Podiatrists are sending a loud message…most foot issues which develop in midlife and beyond are caused by foot abuse in poorly constructed and improperly fit shoes.

Another thing we have allowed the fashion industry to tell us, is that a luxury line is defined by pretty ads, shiny store fronts, memorable logos, and European origin.

I have learned luxury lines are best defined by:
1.       Heritage and the involvement of different cultures (and YES, luxury can be MADE IN THE USA.
2.       Craftsmanship and quality control
3.       High end detail
4.       High Value
5.       Credibility and trust

By this last definition, SAS is a luxury line in every possible way. Sure, it is found in San Antonio, Texas and the front of the property is a classic, old fashioned general store (as I showed you yesterday), but the product you receive is all about luxury, comfort, and classic style.  These are shoes meant for our active lives…perfect for travel and stylish wear... whether on the streets of Paris or Texas.  Taste, craftsmanship, customer service, and quality are always in style.

I visited SAS on a weekend when the main factory is closed, but I hope to return soon for one of these tours.  In order to demonstrate the care and quality which goes into each hand crafted shoe, I watched third generation employee, Samantha, make a pair of children’s shoes.

It was fascinating, and though she says she knows not how many shoes she personally has made, you could see the care and time Samantha takes for each little foot.

All of SAS shoes are crafted from the finest Italian leathers on the market.  Italy is one of those cultures which exudes luxury, quality and value and to team with SAS is one way the brand says, "This is luxury."
Craftsmanship is another marker and to watch these shoemakers at their craft gives understanding as to why it takes weeks to fashion a pair of shoes.  The detailing is in hand stitching and careful molding.

I have heard so many women lament that no one sits down and truly measures our feet any longer.  And guess what, my beautiful tour guide Norma (second generation employee) helped me see that I have been wearing the wrong size shoes!   Actually, I am not surprised.  She took careful attention to the sizing of all five of the styles I selected to try on.  My feet were so happy…and lately, they have been miserable!
This is the reason why…at this moment…you must go into one of the 200 SAS locations to be properly fit and cannot purchase online.  The experience of the fit is a primary component of this quality line.  And, currently, these classics do not go out of style!  The brogues and loafers with your jackets and sweaters will keep you feeling your stylish best all season.  I will be seen all over the city in my SAS menswear inspired leather flats….and loving it…when the feet are happy, the rest of me is happy!!

Finally, for those visiting or living in the city…the SAS General Store is a great place to find the markdowns.  There is a section of the store for shoes which are slightly blemished on the leather…for each pair I picked up, I could not find anything wrong with them…it is really slight…but helps you afford more of these comfortable, luxurious shoes.  Now, I want to get my husband, son, and grandson a pair!!

Has fast fashion killed your feet?  Let’s get a conversation going….

In order to link up with Sacramento's Share-in-style, I needed a Halloween themed outfit...found it in the SAS GENERAL STORE...go HERE FOR SHARE-IN-STYLE  and MONDAY MINGLE to see more fun fashion!!

A Visit toYesteryear...And A Tease for Monday!

I spent Saturday morning at the GENERAL STORE OF SAN ANTONIO SHOEMAKERS (SAS).  They had me charmed from the minute we pulled onto the property...located next to their shoe making factory.

This huge store is like walking on to a movie set of western life-past...including vintage transportation from buggies to early cars...antique popcorn makers...and even an ice cream parlor and candy store....with old favorites in bins just ripe for scooping.

I sighed upon entering the door...cookies had been placed in the ovens and popcorn was popping in preparation for five tour buses which would visit that day.  The aromas were delicious.

They sell popcorn and a rich cup of coffee for a nickle and soda in a bottle for a dime. All food products and merchandise sold are 100% American made.

In fact, one of my favorite stories was of a retirement community which makes the specialty purses they sell in the store. The purses are fun and creative...and the makers, appearing on a video next to their wares,  are precious.

But, the charm of the atmosphere...the inviting aromas...the wonderful products sold from gifts, to accessories, to shoes, to books, and more...are all wrapped in the warm friendly smiles of the employees.  I was greeted with genuine joy from the minute I walked in the door... and struck with how everyone seemed to be really happy to be there.

Many of the employees are second and third generations of  other SAS employees...this is family to them...this is home.  They readied for the tour buses as if preparing for visitors to their houses.  And you could sense the excitement. Yet, I was told this is a normal day for them.  They are accustomed to being a part of tourists plans to our city.
Inside this old original mule barn are many stories...but when you get down to it...the real story is all about the shoes!
And tomorrow I have a lot to share with you and something for you to consider about your shoes.  I hope to see you then!  Have a great day, everyone!
