Susan Graver Style: A Sweatshirt to Love!

I really thought I had left sweatshirts behind me until I met this one, by designer SUSAN GRAVER, at one of my favorite resale shops, CLOTHES MENTOR!  Susan's designs are most often seen on QVC.  After finding this sweatshirt, I am going to watch her segments now!
First of all, it is in one of my favorite colors... autumn orange!  Next the design and seaming is wonderful...pockets, seams in the front and back, and this cool rouching on the sleeves!! It feels like a sweatshirt, but is anything but your average sweatshirt! I will wear this many times this year!

I chose to style it with a brown, knit scarf purchased a couple of years ago at STEIN MART, and my ELAINE TURNER leopard flats...which I adore!
This is my entry for HOW I WEAR MY FAVORITE COLOR to be seen on Wednesday, October 1 at

Cirque Jewels...Exquisite Jewelry!

This beautiful necklace is by jewelry designer, Shawn Behnam, owner of CIRQUE JEWELS  Shawn joined other artisans and designers four years ago to make unique, classic, timeless creations for the modern woman.
They fashion sterling silver, 18K gold accents, and unique semi-precious stones to create jewelry not found in other places with quality and economic understanding in mind.

What I found to be so beautiful, is how dainty and petite these handcrafted pieces are.   They are stunning.  This would be a wonderful company for gift giving…the necklace arrived in a beautiful package, and with a clean cloth, and even chocolates!

You might check them out at THEIR WEBSITE…you will love the time you spend there!

Happy Saturday, all!

Jenny Craig: Teaching Me to Run Short Races

When I saw this quote....I thought, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I AM DOING!"   Seeing the JENNY CRAIG WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM through has been a series of short races for me.  This week, I lost four ounces...my total is now sixteen pounds and four ounces.
I was hoping for more, but I know what tripped me up....
The last two weeks, I have been in the kitchen.  There is just something about autumn that makes me want to cook.  So I have!  I have cooked chili, Mexican food and pulled pork for my husband and college student-son.  Of course, it is hard to resist once it is cooked.
But, I am counting my blessings, that I still lost small amounts of weight.  I really want to run a better race this week...so the boys are on their own...no cooking this weekend!!
I will be sticking to the JENNY CRAIG FOOD PLAN.  I even get a BREAKFAST BURRITO this week...gotta love it!

Have and amazing Friday, everyone!

Finding My Own, Personal Retailer, Because I MATTER! Plus the Thursday Blog Hop!

I have an autumn ritual…I always find a quiet evening to watch one of my favorite movies, You’ve Got Mail.  I pretty much know every line….for me, a movie with romance, comedy, bookstores, New York, coffee, and seasons is practically perfect.

There is a scene where Tom Hanks is describing Starbuck’s customers and how our personalities can be discovered within the flavors and sizes we order.  I smile when he delivers the lines, because I know there is an element of truth to this.   Just like I know our personal style can often be seen within the retailers we care to frequent most often for our clothing.
When I decided to carry the I MATTER Sign, I went seeking clothing retailers which met these goals:
1.       They predominately carried the clothing which sent the messages I desired to send.
2.       They carried the sizes I needed and featured flattering designs.
3.       They were in my budget range.
4.       They made me feel good about me.
At the time, eleven years ago, I began to reinvent me, I knew I had to dress the body I currently had…and it was overweight.  But, I needed an immediate boost of encouragement.  To use weight loss as a reason not to shop, would have resulted in me remaining stagnant and in a depression.  In fact, I am just now really getting a handle on healthy eating and exercise and it was the encouragement of learning style and fashion which took me forward, but it took a long term commitment to see it through.
Back to clothing…I decided the messages I wanted to send with my new style... nowhere on the list was the word FRUMPY.  Unfortunately, many of the designs for larger, curvier women are frumpy…not fashionable.  I was able to nix several retailers immediately for their offerings for the plus sized....too many tents and lack of design.
That is why I eventually camped (almost literally) inside of LANE BRYANT.  The clothes were youthful, trendy, and fashionable.  They got me through many years of struggles until I finally entered Misses sizes again.  I love the designers of LANE BRYANT and what they offer women of many ages and plus sizes.  I also found great options at Macy’s in their designer plus size offerings and occasionally, at that time, Chico’s larger sizes.

You can save yourself a lot of time in the long run if you take the time now to discover YOUR PERSONAL RETAILERS…the ones who meet all of your style needs.  Then occasionally take your measurements, it will make shopping a better experience since fit is so important.

When you carry the I MATTER sign, it is worth it to discover what works best for your needs.  It will be as if those places exist just for you…getting to know the sales personnel is important as well!

Now, I am off for a Venti Nonfat Pumpkin Spice Latte…so what does that mean about me.  For sure, that I love autumn!

Who is your favorite retailer?  Let us know and then go enjoy the wonderful bloggers of Katie’s Favorite Things Blog Hop!  Have a wonderful Thursday, everyone!

Goodwill: Ralph Lauren and Affordable Classic Styling

I have written much lately about how quality, classic styling never goes out of style!  Some reply, "But I cannot afford the prices on top designer fashion pieces."  Quality is just not affordable...some say.  Well, I submit to you....It can be...
This $275 Ralph Lauren jacket was brand new...all tags on...when I found it at GOODWILL SA (Bulverde Road @ Highway 1604).  It is great classic styling which never goes away!

The striped cotton Ralph Lauren blouse was found at GOODWILL SA (Bitters Road @ Highway 281) and goes perfect with the jacket...there are so many ways I can wear these pieces.

The scarf is not designer, but can be paired perfectly with the jacket or blouse and has the same Ralph Lauren touch!  I always look at the scarves when I shop Goodwill!

Check out their GOODWILL SA FACEBOOK PAGE, and remember your donations and dollars are helping the local community!!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!!

What's On My Desk....and A Book Giveaway!

This September has been one of the busiest I have experienced in a long time.  This blog is quite active….and that is a good thing.  It keeps me running with fun opportunities I can bring before the audience and even with more audience interaction…I welcome all of the new readers and thank you for joining us.  Yet, all areas of my life are very busy…my day job as a high school teacher, parenting, grandparenting, writing, and relaxing…no wait, there hasn’t really been any relaxing!!

So, my desk is piling up and I decided to go ahead and share the books with you waiting to be read…because they each look very good and the author of the last one has sent an extra copy for one of you to enjoy!!

Let’s get started…..

I am really looking forward to reading, The Digital Mystique: How the Culture of Connectivity Can Empower Your Life - Online and Off.  Since this is the world I currently reside in the most, I look forward to the observations of author and digital media innovator, Sarah Granger.
"A digital native since 1982, Granger examines how digital media shapes our everyday lives in permanent and powerful ways—and then uses her expertise to help people of all experience levels learn, grown, and thrive by way of the internet, social media, and mobile devices.
Granger focuses on helping people understand their digital lives and offers advice that is helpful for those who might be new to the space—as well as those who are already engaged online. With a section specifically for seniors, The Digital Mystique would be perfect for your readers. I’d love to hear if you might be interested in a review, excerpt, or author Q&A for September. Let me know if you’d like a review copy or PDF of the book. I’d be more than happy to send!
As a widely published journalist and digital media innovator, Granger is the ideal expert to discuss how information technology impacts all of us. Her writing has appeared in ForbesHarvard Business ReviewSFGateThe Huffington Post, and BlogHer, and she’s been featured on CBS News, Good Morning America, and NPR."

The No-Nonsense Bone Health Guide is a book I must read soon...especially since I have Osteoporosis and currently take a medication this author says could have many consequences associated with it.
I do believe it is important for us to be informed of all sides of these issues in order to make the best decisions with our medical professionals.
Lani Simpson has specialized in bone health for more than 25 years, and has written this book for bones of all ages.  She researches which foods and medicines might hurt, and which ones will help bone health.  I just might sit down with this one later today...I think it just might be a must read!

Find it here on AMAZON WITH NO-NONSENSE BONE HEALTH GUIDE

Last, but not least, in this busy, crazy, over-booked world, we can all use a little humor and entertainment.  Enter  Many Paws for women...believe it or not, this is a pop-up book for midlife!!
It's a rush to your senses with fun graphics and prose about wrinkles, sagging, hot flashes, and all the challenges of aging.  This is a fun gift book or bedside companion!  Author, Susan DeGarmo has found a way to help us begin or end the day with laugh.  Susan wants me to make sure one of you enjoys the read.  So, please follow the Rafflecopter below.  I will annouce the winner next Friday.

If you just cannot wait...then find the order MANY PAWS ON AMAZON

I hope all of you are enjoying reading time more than me...these look like good ones.

Feeling Old? The Eyes Have It!

When I saw the results of a recent study taken by Vibrant Nation of midlife women, I was not surprised at the results.  What are the top factors that make us feel older?  The top three indicators were our clothes, hairstyles, and the need to wear glasses.
I have been wearing glasses consistently for about ten years, so I completely agree our glasses make us feel older.  My husband fought the need to have readers so much, he would use my glasses to read the menu when we went out to eat.

In fact, the research showed that most women will borrow a friend’s glasses, go mostly to restaurants where they know the menu, or order a special the waiter highlights.  One woman even confessed to taking the menu in her handbag to the restroom where the lighting is better.

The impact of needed glasses had this emotional impact on the study participants:  Wearing glasses made them feel....
32% Annoyed
20% Older
12% Frumpy
5%   Embarrassed
I think most of us would confirm we have felt these emotions when our focus goes blurry.  The majority of us are experiencing what is known as presbyopia. We are most aware of the deterioration when trying to read labels or electronic devises. Presbyopia is a condition which

·Impacts the eye’s ability to focus
·Progresses over time
·Can occur in people who are already wearing prescription glasses or contact lenses for distance
· May lead to the need for bifocal or multi-focal contact lenses

The good news of modern advancements is that now there are multi-focus contact lenses which make it possible to say good-bye to reading glasses.  (And as a new wearer of contact lenses, my husband loves this! He is a huge fan)  He does not have to look for readers left lying all over the place and he no longer has to borrow my glasses.

BAUSCH & LOMB has introduced Pure Vision 2, Multi-focal Contact Lenses for Presbyopia which may eliminate the need for reading glasses.  This advanced lense

·Features an innovative 3-Zone Progressive designed to improve near, intermediate, and distance vision
·Thin, rounded edge design
·Available for extended wear up to 30 days
·Simply put, these new lenses provide clarity where it counts – in the real world.

You can learn more and get a free sample at www.goodbyereaders.com, or from your eye care professional.  I am going to check it out!  It is time for my bi-annual eye appointment anyway.

Taking Risks Means I MATTER! Plus the Thursday Blog Hop!

So excited to be back with I MATTER THURSDAY!!  This is where we remember we all should be at the top of our priority list!  If we take care of ourselves, we can do more for the people in our lives…family, friends, employees, bosses, etc.
I have been thinking a lot lately about taking risks.  Midlife can be a fearful time…we realize life goes quickly and perhaps our opportunities are sifting grains of sand in our hands. It is a pressing time to make changes and pursue our passions.  It takes courage to go forward and usually requires some level of risk taking.
Recently, I was so inspired when I met midlife business owners, Jody Cochran and Nicole Nugent.  One year ago, they stepped out with courage and began the boutique of their dreams here in San Antonio.  It is called BAKER TATUM…the name actually comes from their maiden names!
These two friends participated in the neighborhood Garden Club and discovered their love for plants, and beautiful home furnishings. They loved unique planters and pots and also believed plants made the best gifts for just about any occasion.  They dreamed together, planned together, and took the plunge together without any real retail or business experience between them.
But, this unique boutique has been a big success.  Not only will you discover stunning table décor, beautiful monogrammed linens for your guests, stunning jewelry design, and uncovered antique treasures, but you will also find a work area to create your own gifts whether it be succulents or orchids, wrapped in beautiful boxes and papers.  In fact, at a recent gathering for local bloggers we were able to dive right into the potting soil and moss, and fashion are own garden creations.  For those not yet ready to plant their own, of course, the ladies will make your gifts for you and have them ready for pick up.
Jody and Nicole love the neighborhood feel they get from a location right next to our infamous Bird Bakery, and the ease of a location near their homes.  They have learned together and did not allow lack of retail business to discourage them.  Customers can see immediately by the shop décor, the welcoming aromas of glowing Nest candles, and their friendly service that the ladies have tapped into some key points for success....exquisite tastes being a huge part of it.   “When shopping for inventory,” explained Jody, “we make certain no one else in town is offering the same and we check ourselves to see if we are willing to buy it for our own homes if it does not sell.”  They do not stock a lot of inventory, but keep the unique pieces moving…so far, this plan is working.

When we carry the I MATTER sign, we should be constantly looking for opportunity.  Are we doing work which brings smiles to our faces...brings fulfillment to our souls?  It is never too late to take a risk…just ask BAKER TATUM (ON FACEBOOK)…they are having the times of their lives!
Now, please, for even more inspiration, go visit the wonderful blogs of Katie's Favorite Things Blog Hop!  And have an amazing Thursday!
