Low Self Esteem: A Problem or Not? Plus Thursday's Blog Hop!!

Vacation time is often a time of reflection and inspiration for me.  I am not moving quite as fast to fulfill all of my responsibilities… so, when questions are posed online, I have time to ponder.   This week in one thread (CAROL CASSARA), the question was discussed as to why women still struggle with low self-esteem; especially, in an age where more opportunities are available to women than ever before.
As a high school teacher, I still watch young girls struggle with it…they continue to look for validation from boys…many continue to refuse to look forward toward a career…and more than ever before, they struggle with comparisons especially watching other girls on social media who often, they believe, have better lives.  Though I believe there is improvement, the problems still exist.   So I am more passionate than ever to be a spokesperson for I MATTER.  While I am glad I finally got my act together, I also do not want others to wait as long as I did to wake up!  Life is short…don’t waste a minute of it.
It takes strength and courage to get out of a funk and go forward.  But, we all have that strength inside…though some of us may have to dig deeper.   I see many women who remind me of myself in my 40s.   I stopped caring.  Voices around me (mostly family) were not encouraging and caused me to shut down.   Stresses of life at that time seemed overwhelming.  Let’s face it…when you have to live with both your own mother and mother-in-law for a time, it’s grueling.   I worked hard to care for everyone else, but me.

The little I MATTER sign is sitting in a box today on the way to a resale shop!  Every day, it seems, I am clearing out the junk of the past…refining and designing who I am today…a strong, confident, joyful woman.  I am not defined by other’s opinions or comparisons to other lives (yes, adults do that too)…or media messages… or what I see in the mirror.  More than ever before, I am confident of my abilities and the value I bring to the marketplace and my community.  Yes, it takes work to feel good inside and outside.  It also takes quite meditation and prayer.  But, it is still important to help other women from high school upwards to see that they have value, worth…and that THEY MATTER.

What do you think…do women struggle just as much with low self-esteem as in the past…or do you believe low self-esteem is no longer an issue?

Just Ten More Days....

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
-John Lubbock

The month of July has been my time off from teaching.  But in just ten short days, I return to the school campus!  It always goes too fast.  So, I want to use my last ten days wisely....here is my plan!

Even if I have to go alone, I want to see The Hundred-Foot Journey"
with Helen Mirren.

It will be released just as I return.

See the MATISSE EXHIBIT AT THE SAN ANTONIO MUSEUM OF ART!

Time is running out!

Have the remaining mornings with coffee on my patio and my flowers.

I am beginning my fifteenth year of teaching in a room with no windows to the outside...so sad!  Some days I do not know if it is sunny or not!

Maybe...hit one more sale or thrift shop before returning.

There are just a few items I still have my
eye on...some really great prices continue!

I have met so many friends for lunch this month...I know that can be a "diet" challenge...but there is one left I really need to get with before lunches are once again difficult!

Finally, I have appointments remaining for nails, toes, and hair! So I will return polished and confident.  Any other teachers out there?

What are you planning for the remaining days of summer vacation?

Have a happy Wednesday!

J Jill: IKAT Textile Celebrates Culture...Plus A Scarf Giveaway!!:

My dear friend, Kerry, said, "Let's go eat Thai food for your birthday!"  And, of course, I replied...I AM SO THERE.  When planning what to wear, I immediately turned to J JILL'S BIG IKAT PRINTED SHIRT!!

Since we were visiting another culture for food, this J Jill collection was perfect to visit another culture for style. IKAT is one of the world's oldest traditions in textile decoration and is traced back to 15th Century South America.  And I do believe J Jill has the softest linen and it wrinkles less than any I have worn.

So, off we go to eat Thai food at THAI TOPAZ!

Delicious food...great atmosphere...sweet company...and beautiful clothes...who could ask for anything more!  Thanks to Kerry and J Jill!

Now, here is the really exciting part!  One of you is going to win an  IKAT INFINITY SCARF FROM J JILL!!

Just follow the Rafflecopter...I cannot wait to see who wins!!  Today, I am linking with the fabulous ladies of MONDAY MINGLE!!  Check them out!

Happy Saturday everyone!

Jenny Craig: Takes Me Back to the Basics

Learning lessons the hard way...I always have to do it the hard way. Not sure at my age why I still struggle with the food-thing!  I was raised in a house which celebrated EVERYTHING with food. Plus, if someone had a bad day, it had to be assuaged with food!  All major events included major food and cooking!

So, being a good programmed Texas, Southern girl, I decided I would stray from the JENNY CRAIG FOOD PLAN to celebrate July 4th and my birthday!  Both, bad decisions....because on both days I ate high fat, rich foods and on both days I was sick at my stomach for 3-4 days afterwards.  I also gained a pound back after my birthday and could not weight train one morning from the nausea!
Now, the good news.  My stomach has changed and I owe it all to JENNY CRAIG.  I cannot tolerate the bad foods I have grown so accustomed to eating any longer. So, no more celebrations my way. I am going to stick faithfully to this eating plan until I get'er done!

That means celebrations the Jenny Craig way!  The picture above has become my Saturday morning celebration breakfast of CINNAMON FRENCH TOAST.  I love it and it is my weekly treat...though it is on the approved eating plan.  No more changing...back to the basics...and back to the success I have when I am on Jenny!  This is where you will find me sitting tomorrow morning!

  Have a delicious Friday, everyone!

*I was provided a free trial program, and free Jenny’s Cuisine® items. Currently, I purchase their food at a special rate.   However, the opinions and writing are entirely my own.
Members following the Jenny Craig program, on average, lose 1-2 lbs per week

I MATTER and RELAXATION!....Plus the Thursday Blog Hop!

What dark room is housing my little I MATTER sign this week?  I pulled out the sign at the end of a recent massage session.  Alright, everyone, true confessions time.  For years, I was afraid of massage.  I thought it questionable and I did not have the courage to allow someone else to do this to me when I was not fully clothed…perhaps I was a prude…or tainted by old stereotypes…but whatever the reason, I am so glad it is in my past!
When we carry the I MATTER sign, we should be willing to do whatever will keep us healthy... and in my personal lifestyle, that includes massage.  I have always had tight muscles and difficulty relaxing. Good friends convinced me I needed to join them on the table!  Benefits of massage for me have been relaxation, release of stress, body preparation for workouts, flexibility to prevent injuries, de-toxify my system, and sleep assistance.  I am not able to do it as often as I wish; however, it is now approved in my health care plan...you might check that out in your own plan.
If you have never gone for a massage before, here are a few things to remember:

1.       In most places, you can request the gender of the therapist you prefer.
2.       Talk to them about your concerns and any problems you have been experiencing such as migraine headaches, pulled muscles, lack of sleep, etc.
3.       You can tell them if you prefer light, medium, or deep tissue massage.
4.       You decide how much clothing to keep on or take off.  They are very careful with coverage and respectful of your privacy.
5.       It is not best to go right after eating.  Better to have an empty stomach and eat later.
6.       Afterwards, drink lots of water the rest of the day.

There are many ways we pamper ourselves…I know the list is long…but I highly recommend massage be on your priority list or gift list.  You will not regret it!

My husband really blessed me this year on my birthday…just had to share the card!  Have a great week and make sure you visit the blogs of Katie’s Favorite Things Blog Hop!
