10 Ways to Work the Optimism Muscle...Plus the Thursday Blog Hop!

Optimism is a muscle….work it every day! – Robin Roberts

I recently heard Robin Roberts say this in an interview with her good friend, Diane Sawyer.  She was discussing what she has learned through her illness, and how she is now experiencing more joy than before.  This was an interview about her new book, Everybody’s Got Something.

She is truly a survivor… lived through great difficulties and is still smiling.  I know what it is to be shut down by trials of life.  I experienced it more than once.  I gave others too much control over my emotions and self- worth.

During my mommy years, I was not always working the optimism muscle.  In fact, I had a propensity to be negative most days.  When I took the criticisms of family, the stress of children and their activities, and comparisons through peer pressure then mixed them all together one deadly cocktail was created.  Thank goodness I had a wake=up call.

Finally, I began to realize that I MATTER. This began a regular workout for the optimism muscle and now it is a part of me. Let’s look at what it took for me to turn things around:
1.       Live life one day at a time…I am going to make this a good day…no matter what.
2.       Understand that life is short, it is a gift not to be wasted.
3.       Expect joy every day…if we seek it, we will find it.
4.       Don’t let challenges become bigger than they are.  This just means that I do not allow something to get out of control.  I truly believe it is never too late to make a change.
5.       Start small…what is one little thing you can do right now that will put a smile on your face. Have you kept your radio on music others like?  Change the station today to what you want to listen to!
6.       Take time to look at flowers…the sky…your child’s face…artwork…animals…so much around us we often just rush by.
7.       When something devastating happens, don’t allow it to shut you down. Prayer and meditation is key.  There is still a lot of life to live.
8.       The best way to experience true joy is to help others around you who need it.
9.       However, sometimes negative, difficult people need less time in our lives.  If there are people who reject optimism and make you feel bad about you, seriously consider spending less time with them.  Sometimes this is a very difficult, yet necessary, decision.  Only you know what is possible in this area.

10.   Finally, recognize you are not a mistake…you are valuable…you are beautiful…now what are some things you can do to help you feel and look your very best.

Let me know if you begin to work that muscle!  For all of the I MATTER Posts, just click HERE.  And for Robin's new book...look

Why Do Publications Do This?!

This headline caught my eye when reading Sunday's local newspaper....AGE-PROOF BEAUTY, 8 Secrets to keep you looking and feeling young.

At best, this headline is deceptive...the article had next to NO advice to help us look and feel young.  In fact, all the article did was dispel old rumors...such as, you will not increase your gray hairs by plucking one! (Seriously?)

This type of weak reporting is why BLOGS are the best place to find your style and beauty tips!  Today, join me over on THE MIDLIFE BOULEVARD for five more concrete ways to look younger...no empty headlines with false promises there!

Book Review: All You Need Is Less

This book is a little convicting...OK, it is a lot, convicting.  However, most books informing us how to be more environmentally friendly usually invoke visions of my mother wagging her finger in my face.  All You Need is Less by Madeleine Somerville is not the voice of a preachy, angry mom...she has written a funny, relatable guidebook to help many of us make green living a reality.

From how to grow an herb garden to how to make ridiculously easy window cleaner, there are suggestions which we can implement today if we like.  I have never considered getting rid of dryer sheets, but she just may have convinced me and demonstrated exactly how to do it.

Did you know that Apple Cider Vinegar cures everything...seriously, everything...including repelling fleas??

If you are up for a lifestyle change which will make a difference in our world, order this book today!  I know I will be making a few changes!!  Just go to my sidebar if you would like easy ordering from Amazon!!
Happy Sunday, everyone!!

A Beautiful Time of Year!

"Life is full of beauty.  Notice it.  Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams."  -Ashley Smith

Hope your day is full of beauty!  Any special plans??

Goodwill: It's Heating Up, Part II

On, Wednesday HERE I showed you how I purchased some two and three piece outfits recently at GOODWILL-SA...broke them up and fashioned some different looks for this summer.  This two piece is another one...I like the jacket for a tribal, casual look.  Not sure, yet what I will do with the skirt..possibly wear it with a safari-type-camp shirt, and a woven belt on the outside and sandals.  Even if I just wear the jacket ...it will a keeper at $4.

One that keeps me cool anyway!!

Today, is our famous BATTLE OF FLOWERS PARADE to celebrate FIESTA.  This is the largest parade in America organized and manned completely by women!!

Our Fiesta attire includes FIESTA MEDALS from around San Antonio...so I just might wear my Goodwill medal to the parade!
Happy Friday!!  Viva Fiesta!

When I Matter I Enjoy My World...Plus the Thursday Blog Hop!!

Meet Jackie!  Or... also known as Mamaw and Meego to her grandkids!  Jackie wears a huge smile for many reasons.  As a very active 52-year-old, Jackie has nurtured a professional career for 24 years, while also nurturing five children from ages 30 to 3 and three grandchildren (with another on the way in October).

Jackie shows that she matters with great styling, healthy eating, regular workouts with a trainer; her faith, and keeping up with her very stylish, 30-something daughter, Tori, who is rocking the world of mommy bloggers on her blog, thesTORIbook!  Check it
out...worth the read!

Jackie and I both have learned that when we place ourselves on our own priority list and say I MATTER, we will be happier if we stay relevant...up to date...not old fashioned.
Reading...
learning social media...
learning technology...
enjoying life (museums, films, shows, concerts, family events)...
getting out of the house...
reading works by women our age for inspiration...those who are engaged in life....these are just a few things we can do to stay young.
Jackie surrounds herself with a large, vibrant family.  I am surrounded by family, but also constantly by the high school teens I teach and interact with throughout my day.  Enjoying and understanding today's youth, can actually keep us from feeling old.

Walk away from the weights which burden and age...and engage in a life which says I MATTER.  Put yourself at the top of the list...it's fun!

Eileen Fisher + Boyer New York = A New Look I Love!

Hi everyone, I hope you enjoyed your Easter, Passover, or simply Spring weekend!  As I wrote here on Saturday, I am battling an injury and a sinus infection...but it will not keep me from smiling!
I guess it is okay to give myself a treat...right?  I fell in love with this EILEEEN FISHER BONE SILK AND COTTON JACKET when I first saw it....so, when the sale price hit, I gave in!  The EF CREPE PANTS were purchased last summer in Chicago at the Eileen Fisher location in WATER TOWER PLACE!

Eileen Fisher collections are perfect for women of a certain age...beautiful and easy.  I am beginning to budget now for quality pieces in my wardrobe...especially since some of the basics are done.  If I plan right, I can pick up an item every now and then like this jacket.

Another line perfect for our age group, is the gorgeous jewelry from BOYER NY.  They sent me the COBRA NECKLACE with the magnetic, easy clip and the ART DECO CLIP ON EARRINGS....very comfortable for those who need a clip on!  I know I will wear both of these often! I have one earlobe which is about to sag too much for my other earrings. This would be a good line to shop for Mother's Day gifts...and I wore them all day at work with no discomfort and lots of compliments!  Now, through April 30, you can receive a 20% discount when you order...just type FRIEND in the code box at checkout!  Thanks Boyer New York!

I may be a little sickly...but still smiling!  How is everyone else doing? Have your avoided Spring allergies....BTW, thank you for all of the sweet comments about my hip injury...hopefully, I will keep plugging on!

Happy Monday, all!  Now, please go visit the fabulous bloggers of VISIBLE MONDAY!!  and MONDAY MINGLE!!

Stress Relief!!

The start to 2014 has been…let’s see what’s the best word….I guess…exhausting!  I injured a muscle in my hip over two months ago.  The pain has been excruciating at times.  I have a new appreciation for those who live with constant pain.  I had five doctor appointments and while it is MUCH better, the pain persists.

I am determined not to quit my weight training, so I continue on with a modified workout and new warm up and cool down stretches particularly for the hip.  And, let me be clear, it was not injured during a weight workout.  But, I did stop the in-between cardio workouts and have been highly discouraged that I had to slow down.

When I add pain management to a myriad of negative voices around me, it is a battle to maintain positivity…but a battle I am determined to win.  The voices hail from many changes occurring at the private school where I teach…living with two college students…living with a CPA during a stressful tax season…living down the block from a daughter learning to raise a toddler…and, as a journalism teacher, living with the dark side of the news.

This is why, a quite morning in my backyard was much appreciated.  No sounds, but the birds and a breeze.  No complaining…lamenting…arguing…or whining from any plants or the sun.  Just peaceful, glorious beauty and quiet.
I love my family, my job, my students, my profession and the fact that I have a group of friends to share a trainer with each week.  But, for one morning, the peace of a backyard and the hope given us from Easter celebrations…were exactly what this lady needed.

Stress Management keeps us young…and we should face it head on when we feel the heaviness setting in.  How do you handle your stress?

Happy Saturday!!

Marlo Thomas, Diane Keaton...Inspirational Reads!

Need a little inspiration?  Something to get your heart pumping and creativity screaming?  Then get a copy of Marlo Thomas’s New York Times bestseller, It Ain’t Over…Til It’s Over (Reinventing your life and realizing your dreams – anytime, any age).

“There’s nothing I love – and need- more than the reassurance that we can all dream – and start over again.”  -Marlo Thomas

Thomas has compiled 60 inspiring stories of women who (for different reasons) literally took ideas and dreams and made them happen.  “They were stuck. Some were stuck in dead-end jobs that made them feel lifeless inside.  Others were new empty- nesters – confronted, practically overnight, with a big, quiet house and a bigger, quieter future.  Still others had experienced a life crisis – a divorce, a layoff, the death of a loved one – and had fallen into a stultifying funk.”

I have had a hard time putting this book down…the cat bit me for water, my son begged me for dinner, and I screened phone calls.

We all can be inspired to take steps of courage …to act on ideas swimming around in our heads…to take a leap of faith.
I will share one story with you... Layla Fanucci, 56, had never painted a picture in her life.  But, she wanted a painting for her house and could not find exactly what she was looking for, so she bought some paint and began a masterpiece.  Her amazing story takes her from friends noticing her painting to one day actually selling one piece of artwork for $100,000!  “You know how runners talk about that amazing euphoric feeling they get at the end of a marathon? When I paint, I have that wonderful feeling the entire time,” she said. Hundreds of paintings and gallery showings later, she is a bona fide painter.
“We all have hidden talents,” she continues.  “If we find them, we need to work on them every day and let them flourish.  I often think of what I would have missed if I had not given up a steady, reliable salary and followed my passion.”

Her story plus 59 others have my jets soaring.  These women show us all things are possible and it is never too late to have a little fun!
MORE magazine also arrived this week and has a fun read about Diane Keaton's new book, "Let's Just Say It Wasn't Pretty," and another encouraging article called, "What it Means to Live Fearlessly."  Pick up the May issue.

"I think I am like most women.  In the mirror, most of us find a few disappointments. We each deal with them the best we can. We slather, we dab, we rouge, we nip, we tuck, we ignore. I don't regret that the face I present to the world is the one I was born with."
-Diane Keaton discussing her decision not to have plastic surgery

Find both books below, if you would like to order from Amazon....and be prepared to find some life on the joyful side!

Have a fabulous Friday, everyone!

I Matter When I Pursue My Passions...plus the Thursday Blog Hop!

Meet Colleen.  She is a super successful Mommy Blogger at SAN ANTONIO MOM BLOGS and the co-founder and overseer of our local blogging group (last count over 300).  She has two children nine and under, and has been married for ten years.  But, Colleen understands that her active blogging career actually makes her a happier mom. “I love being a mom, but writing and consulting reminds me of who I was before I became a mom.  Working allows me to stay in touch with the woman I was, while also helping me discover the person I am now.”

“The most important thing I do for myself is make sure I get enough sleep.  It’s not always easy and I don’t always accomplish it, but my body, mind and soul all thrive when I get eight hours.  Getting good rest also gives me the energy I need to be at my best for my family and my work.”

Colleen’s quote about staying in touch with the woman she was in order to discover the woman she is now should be on a plaque.  As I have written, the majority of my mommy days were done with me on a shelf.  But, after my makeover and a new found confidence.  I was ready to get out and get going.
Today’s lesson is simply this:  When you carry the I MATTER sign, you agree to take care of all of your needs again.  What is it that you love and have not done in a long time?  Start small and do it this week!
For me, that was writing.  Something I started in fifth grade…was a part of me… and I shelved it.  Once I left my house and began to cover stories for my blog again…I felt an amazing surge of joy.

It doesn’t have to be a job.  It could be a hobby.  It could be volunteer work.  But, I know there are some of you who have placed a passion out-of-reach.  Sit down and consider how you can re-enter and feed your soul again.
As Colleen has discovered, this makes her a more joyful, well rounded mom….one that says, I MATTER!

Thanks for stopping by, now please enjoy the Thursday Blog Hop and even hop on yourself.  Then tell us in the comments what you are doing that feeds your passions!

Happy Thursday, all!
