Self Care Means I MATTER...And the Thursday Blog Hop!

This beautiful lady is my colleague, Glennis.  She is amazing...full of so much joy and life.  She takes care of her large family, her students, and serves at her church.  She understands the importance of self-care if she is going to take care of all of those in her life. (We were at Goodwill shopping for a special event coming up in life....and I will be blogging about that later! She looks pretty fierce in this black sweater dress we found...right??)

What does SELF CARE mean to you?  Does it mean you eat right…exercise…attend regular checkups…go to the dentist…or all of this and more??
I have confessed before I went through a period of caring for so many others, I neglected caring for me.  I have learned in the last eleven years the vast importance of SELF CARE…of setting boundaries so that I do not neglect myself.  However, there are some who believe setting such boundaries is selfish, greedy, mean, and shows lack of concern for others. Well, with all things, there must be balance.  This is where caring the I MATTER sign is important…and where we can see that we actually do more for others when we care for ourselves.
In her book SECOND CALLING, Dale Hanson Bourke writes,

“Self Care is having concern for others but not at your own expense; getting enough sleep, good food, and exercise to remain physically healthy; finding mental stimulation to keep mentally alert; spending time with people who like and respect you; and not expecting one person or group to meet all your needs.”

She also writes, SELF-CARING PEOPLE:
. Do for others because they want to; not to get something in return.
. Act without fear of what others will think because they get satisfaction from the action itself, not the reaction of others.
. Share love and are able to accept love in return.
. Are able to care for others because they recognize and find the love and attention they themselves need
. Know they are neither marvelous nor insignificant
. Understand they are important but not indispensable
. Allow others the dignity of making their own mistakes and claiming their own successes
. Accept themselves and others as they really are, with their faults and strengths
Have you set your boundaries….or are you carrying the burdens on your back of so many other people that you neglect yourself?   Those burdens can lead to depression, fatigue, and poor health.  Those burdens are joy zappers.  And I will warn you... some of those closest to you will not understand when you suddenly pull back.  But, you know, I have learned that it actually helps others for them NOT to rely on me for everything.
Then, we can love life and do so much more when we take time to say I MATTER.

Have a great Thursday and make sure you check out the great

  1. Perfect message and thank you for sharing and hosting today, too!! :)

  2. First of all, that sweater dress is fabulous! I've said it before, you have an amazing Goodwill store where you live! This post is very timely for me. As my mother's health declines and I have taken over her finances, arranging for more and more care (and doing some of it myself), I realize I have shoved myself to the back of the list of those to care for, and it has made me angry, which is NOT good!! I need to find my balance (that I have had throughout my life, self-care was never a chore for me). Your posts are particularly encouraging to me Pam. I need the reminders, especially at this time in my life! Karen

  3. Thanks for sharing this message, Pam. Your friend is gorgeous and I love that dres!

    Happy Thursday! Lou Lou Girls

  8. Wonderful post - as always! I always equate self-care to the demonstration of the oxygen mask on the airplane. You put your own on before you help someone else. The meaning, to me, is that you can't help someone else if you are unconscious! Similarly, you have to keep yourself healthy in order to keep being of service to someone else. Simple mathematics! :)

  9. What a great definition to remember...caring / having concern for others but never at your own expense. Thank you for this wonderful, important reminder, Pam!

  10. Thanks so much for stopping by and thanks for the party!!

  11. Your friend does look beautiful in that dress. Good for her and you! Your words are very wise--I think I need to learn more about self-care. My favorite means right now is alone time and reading.
