Finding My Own, Personal Retailer, Because I MATTER! Plus the Thursday Blog Hop!

I have an autumn ritual…I always find a quiet evening to watch one of my favorite movies, You’ve Got Mail.  I pretty much know every line….for me, a movie with romance, comedy, bookstores, New York, coffee, and seasons is practically perfect.

There is a scene where Tom Hanks is describing Starbuck’s customers and how our personalities can be discovered within the flavors and sizes we order.  I smile when he delivers the lines, because I know there is an element of truth to this.   Just like I know our personal style can often be seen within the retailers we care to frequent most often for our clothing.
When I decided to carry the I MATTER Sign, I went seeking clothing retailers which met these goals:
1.       They predominately carried the clothing which sent the messages I desired to send.
2.       They carried the sizes I needed and featured flattering designs.
3.       They were in my budget range.
4.       They made me feel good about me.
At the time, eleven years ago, I began to reinvent me, I knew I had to dress the body I currently had…and it was overweight.  But, I needed an immediate boost of encouragement.  To use weight loss as a reason not to shop, would have resulted in me remaining stagnant and in a depression.  In fact, I am just now really getting a handle on healthy eating and exercise and it was the encouragement of learning style and fashion which took me forward, but it took a long term commitment to see it through.
Back to clothing…I decided the messages I wanted to send with my new style... nowhere on the list was the word FRUMPY.  Unfortunately, many of the designs for larger, curvier women are frumpy…not fashionable.  I was able to nix several retailers immediately for their offerings for the plus sized....too many tents and lack of design.
That is why I eventually camped (almost literally) inside of LANE BRYANT.  The clothes were youthful, trendy, and fashionable.  They got me through many years of struggles until I finally entered Misses sizes again.  I love the designers of LANE BRYANT and what they offer women of many ages and plus sizes.  I also found great options at Macy’s in their designer plus size offerings and occasionally, at that time, Chico’s larger sizes.

You can save yourself a lot of time in the long run if you take the time now to discover YOUR PERSONAL RETAILERS…the ones who meet all of your style needs.  Then occasionally take your measurements, it will make shopping a better experience since fit is so important.

When you carry the I MATTER sign, it is worth it to discover what works best for your needs.  It will be as if those places exist just for you…getting to know the sales personnel is important as well!

Now, I am off for a Venti Nonfat Pumpkin Spice Latte…so what does that mean about me.  For sure, that I love autumn!

  4. This is so true about finding a retailer that expresses your message! Currently, one of my favorites is Talbots since I basically spend the investment dollars on my wardrobe for work. Since I have the basics pretty much covered, I am also giving more attention to my casual/weekend wardrobe. Since I try more trends with casual wear, I tend to go for less expensive, so Penney's had met that need. Also love Chico's and can't pass up their jewelry and sales! I never have any guilt feelings if I spend less on trends. For jeans and wardrobe staples, I do shop for the better quality jeans in Chico's, Macy's, Nordstrom, again Talbots, etc. I never thought much about it till you asked the question, I just go! We have a Starbucks here at the hospital where I work and I'm going to treat myself to the nonfat Pumpkin Latte today - thanks for the inspiration! I've never had one and it's time! Karen

  8. You are so right about Lane Bryant. Although I am far from curvy, I had a look at their site as I was curious. Great stuff. I think you hit a pot of gold when you decided to dress nicely for your bodyshape at the time. And that it made you interested in losing weight as a further interest in how you can look. It sounds weird but I just know you are right. That is how it works.

  9. "You've Got Mail" is one of my most favorite movies. And, I love your "I Matter" message. It's so true. I'm inching closer to that big 50, I'm overweight and most of the time I do feel frumpy. I always find cute plus sized clothes at Kohl's and Dress Barn. I need to check out the Lane Bryant's that's close to us. Awesome post! So glad I stopped by. I will be back.

  10. Ah, "You've Got Mail..." One of my all-time faves. "I Matter" is a philosophy we all need to embrace. Sadly, as women we are often told at a young age that others' needs should come first. With consistent messages to counter those outdated belief, I know we will shift the paradigm--in time. Thanks for hosting this lovely link up! T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com

  11. I love your "I matter" sign. Currently, my favorite retailers are... Mango for one. I like a lot of their clothing designs and have made fairly good experiences with their quality. And then there is Max&Co., where I go into the shop directly, where the sales personal knows me and where they are really there for you when you visit. It is my guilty pleasure.
