Bobbi Brown: Setting My Record Straight

At this point in your life, looking good is really about the less you do to yourself – less, but of the right thing. There are so many women who, when they get older, think doing more is what will make them look better….I’d rather see women fresh out of the shower because they look ten times prettier untouched than after they’re overdone.” – Bobbi Brown

I confess when I opened Bobbi Brown’s book, BEAUTY EVOLUTION: A GUIDE TO LIFETIME BEAUTY, I turned right to the chapter for women in their sixties!  I wanted to know fact from fiction.  It has taken too long for me to discover many of things my mother told me were simply not true.  This is another reason why I was happy to attend the Bobbi Brown Spring Fling at SAKS FIFTH AVENUE ….and once again bring my questions to the experts.  Only three months ago, I made the decision to leave the drug/grocery store beauty aisles and see what wearing quality makeup is all about…that is myth number one:

1.        Myth Number 1:  Cheaper makeup is just as good as the expensive lines…there is no difference.  Well, it took one day for me to discover this is just not true…sorry Mom. The Bobbi Brown coverage was so much better…my skin felt better…and it stayed on longer.
2.       Myth Number 2:  A woman my age should not wear foundation, because it settles in the wrinkles.  A rich, creamy foundation actually reduces the wrinkles with deep moisturizing.  It hasn't settled in the lines at all.
3.       Myth Number 3: An older woman should not wear a dark eye shadow.  Meet my new best friend, ladies…the name is SUEDE (There was actually a designer on Project Runway who called himself SUEDE!!)…but this cream shadow is fabulous and dispels another rumor…

4.       Myth Number 4: Cream shadow settles in the creases of the eyes and does not stay on. Not this one.  I do use the LONG WEAR EYE BASE UNDERNEATH.
5.       Myth Number 5: Older women should not wear blush.  Unfortunately, our skin thins and gets lighter with age and we do need it…just not too much.  I am now wearing a cream blush and a little powder on top.
6.       Myth Number 6:  Make up brushes are an unnecessary expense…just use fingers or sponges.  Sorry, once again, Mom.  The brushes cover better and actually save money.  We do not use as much product with a brush or a sponge...more goes on the face. (Keep them clean!)

I am pictured above with Kandy, a technician, who has worked with make up since she was 18, and been with Bobbi Brown since the early nineties.   Kandy is well into her fifties and loves to help women of a certain age look their best.  She was happy to put my myths to bed.   She told me I have a lot of purple in my natural lip, so I need to be very careful of the lipstick, but she helped me with a natural lip color…also, with a base of Bobbi’s Lip Balm.  She also took the eye brightening stick and used it on my deep lines around the mouth…sure enough, those lines were softened and not as evident.  She did a fabulous job with my eyes.  SUEDE was the lid color with a lighter metallic powder color just above.  I researched several lines and their samples before deciding to go with Bobbi Brown...but, so far, I am very pleased with my choice!

Here are some of my favorite products to date:

It's all worth it...and I am so glad I finally killed the myths. It is now a budget priority. I love my new makeup routine, and highly recommend it...

Have a fabulous Monday!!

  2. There are 2 items I buy from the drug store. My mascara and clear gel for my brows. Like you, I've learned to use higher quality products. Yes, the price is a higher, but these products last longer and do a better job at what they are targeted to do.

  5. Oooh, I so love Bobbi Brown. I have almost all of her books, with the exception of her newest one. I've also had a makeup lesson and application done with all Bobbi products. I felt like a million bucks. Yes, her product line is not the least expensive, but as you say, the high quality is sooooo worth it! Hmmmm....maybe time to get back on board. I only have a blush right now.

  10. So interesting and enlightening! Looks like I'll be heading to the department store instead of the drug store. I've heard others say the same thing, but wasn't entirely convinced (or too frugal). I have been making myself more of a priority lately and this is another way I see that I can do what is best for my skin and my appearance. Thanks for an inspirational article!

  11. I have been using expensive, quality makeup since I started using foundation in my 30's. It absolutely does make a difference! So glad you found something that works for you and your skin.

  12. I agree. I use some BB products and also Lancome and Clinique. Clinique is unusual in that the brand and its products have evolved along with their customers--I started with them as a teen and their line of skin care for aging skin is excellent. Lancome's Genifique serum is a daily necessity and their foundation is excellent. I've also used BB's foundation. You always look great!

I didn't know about the book, I'll be buying that...maybe today!! xx

  16. I'm a fan of Bobbi Brown as well, I am a steadfast consumer of the creamy concealer kit and the moisturising lipsticks! I am also desiring a bottle of her Beach perfume...smells EXACTLY as a beach would...

  17. I couldn't live without my Trish McEvoy concealer, Nars orgasm blush and Bobbi Brown eyeliner, taupe eye shadow and eyebrow shadow. Good makeup is critical as you get older, it's a bit of less is more in terms of color, but quality is really important, as you note. :)

  19. I am laughing at your "Sorry Mom" comments. :) I'm sure she meant well. I've never tried Bobbi Brown. I just might have to give it a whirl.

  20. I recently started using Bobbi Brown again. I love, love love her foundation and like you use the moisture rich foundation. I also like her concealer and found that 59 soon to be 60 needs both foundation and concealer. I go to the Bobbi Brown make up counter at Macy's. They were very willing to work with me and teach me some new make up tips. Thanks for sharing

  21. Great post Pam! I am still learning about makeup. I am very intimidated by it, and stick with very simple applications.

  23. Pam, Love Bobbie Brown. I like how you dispelled these myths. As someone who used to sell makeup, foundation always improves the skin and protects. I agreed a higher priced one is usually worth the splurge too. You look great. I love going every once in a while and getting new ideas and products, or I get in a rut.
    Have a good week!

  24. Love makeup. Love watching YouTube tutorials. Have learned a lot. I also love bronzer it add shape to my face. Using various "high end" products because I can try them on and see if I like them. What did the makeup artist say to do about the purple in your lips? How to overcome that?
