What I’m Reading …The Power of Style

This is setting up to be the perfect evening for reading, and I am about halfway through Bobbie Thomas’s book, THE POWER OF STYLE.  Thomas has been the Style Editor for The Today Show on NBC since 2005, but it is her background in counseling and psychology which gives this book a unique perspective.
I am living proof working on the outsides helped me grow strength on the insides.  Confidence is powerful and powerfully attractive.  By working on my outsides at age 50, my confidence began to return and soar.  According to Thomas, “Being stylish is not about having a certain body type or bank account.  It’s about embracing your individuality and radiating that spirit in your work, relationships, and everywhere else.”

Style doesn’t mean we all look alike…individuality is a key component.  She includes this quote I love from Lynn Harless, “It’s good to be different. No one ever stood out in a flock.”

Just for kicks, I went to Bobbie’s website where she opens a page for anyone to download a picture and ask for first impressions....so I said, OK I'M GAME!  We get to pick the criteria for others to log in their first impressions….I have people saying I am in my 40s, 50s, and 60s…I will just focus on the positive!!  You might want to check it out HERE
I am looking forward to her chapters on color and fit…hopefully will finish it this evening.

Ok, remember warmer weather is when more yard sales pop out and they can be so much fun!  I love a morning hitting the yard sales and topped with a fun luncheon at a new place!!  A few years ago, I showed up at a yard sale just as the homeowners were closing and filling bags for Goodwill.  When they saw me looking at the scarf in this picture, they told me I could have it!  SCORE!  Yard sales always bring unexpected surprises.

HAVE A FABULOUS WEEKEND!  And please tell us what you are currently reading…..

If I Can Do It, You Can DIY It!

I am a pack rat when it comes to old jewelry...I do not easily discard.  There are some pieces I still have from my 20s!  Last weekend, I was in a cabinet and came across  seashells gathered at the Texas Coast on a family trip several years ago.  I had done nothing with the shells...but I started thinking about necklaces I have recently seen on the blogs and in some stores.  My creative juices were running wild.
A drill, some leather strips from MICHAELS, old necklaces not worn that often, and the shells provided for an easy accessory update.  I simply drilled a hole in the top of the shell, ran a leather strip (this packet offered a white, bronze or gold selection) through the shell and simply tied it to the necklace.  VIOLA...easy, so easy!!

Now, have fun with your shells everyone!!

Then have a fabulous day!

Of Puddles and Clearance Racks....

For eight hours yesterday....it rained...and it rained...and it rained...and it rained.
It rained so much, San Antonio was on the national news.  A huge portion of town was under water...homes destroyed...cars floated away...and three lives lost.
We really needed it after a long season of drought.  It is just sad that it all came at once.

On a brighter note though, I had planned to ask you about "clearance racks!"
I picked up this colorful print top last year in Target on clearance for $8!!  I like it and it is a perfect light weight for our warm summers.  I never let a clearance rack go unnoticed!  I often find a treasure or two from clearance.
Mr. B is the opposite.  He says that everything on a clearance rack is there for a reason...the fact that it is on clearance tells you that it was not wanted...by anyone. So, he runs from clearance racks...while I run toward them.
So, which are you?  A Mr. B clearance hater...or a Pam clearance lover??

Have a wonderful holiday and please remember to honor our troops on this Memorial Day!

I am linking up today with the wonderful ladies of MONDAY MINGLE!!

Easy Accessory Idea

It's raining this Saturday morning...I absolutely love sitting here in the dark, watching the lightening and listening to thunder.  Such a great way to awake on my first morning of summer.
Last summer, there was hardly a drop...we have been in a drought for along time.  One of the area lakes is practically gone..so waking to these sounds is glorious!
I wanted to share with you this beautiful necklace/scarf Gigi is modeling!  This would be so easy to make...with the right piece of jewelry and the right scarf!!  She loves the bohemian style, but this could be done for any style.  I just thought it might get your creative juices flowing as you begin your day!!

Don't forget to thank anyone you meet in the military this weekend and honor the real intention of the Memorial Day holiday.  We have so much to be grateful for with our military men and women...and so often take them for granted.

Have a fabulous Saturday, everyone!

Summertime, Summertime, Sum,Sum, Summertime....

I am officially on summer vacation...Woo Hoo!! Though I have a busy summer ahead...I am still glad to see another school year behind me!!  Now, I realize my OOTD looks much like yesterday's, but I wanted to end the school year in one of my favorites.  I love this knit jacket, with the jeans and jewelry!!
I will be spending a week in Chicago with Mr. B soon...returning to teach summer school speech...then taking six week's to write a book!!  If I am ever going to do this, the time is NOW! So many of you have encouraged me about this book!  In the middle of the summer, I will turn 60...worth some kind of celebration...RIGHT??

So, what is on your calendar this summer??  We would love to know!!  Finally, a fabulous reader, Lise, sent this sign to me and I love it so much I printed one to leave in my classroom to face first thing next year!!  She is one of many new readers from Generation Fabulous...welcome to everyone!  Thank you for your sweet emails and comments...I'm so glad we will be spending time together!

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!!  Expect something wonderful....

Button Up! Then Meet Me By Video!

I do agree, a great jacket can be one way to lose an instant ten pounds...at least look that way!  But, it seems most stylists will say to button the jacket for that more slimming look.
But, I have always preferred to wear my jackets open rather than buttoned.  So, I am coming to you, oh wise readers...which do you prefer??

Opening A New Door

Today is my weekly column for GENERATION FABULOUS.  I have been very open on this blog with my life in an effort to encourage other women during that fun middle age time of life.  But, there are a few doors which have been unopened. Today, I open the door a little wider to what led to my wake-up call at age 50.  This is new information, I have not shared before.  Please click HERE and read the post...I appreciate your comments!

Also, my prayers and heart are with Oklahoma today.  I was born and spent my early childhood in tornado alley in Wichita Falls, TX.  It is frightening.

I hope everyone else will have a safe Tuesday!

First Garden Party of the Season!

Garden Party...Backyard BBQ...Outdoor Cookout...whatever you call them, we love to party outside in Texas.  I am sure that is surprising since we all know it is really hot down south!  But, we will go anywhere for Country Music, sweet tea, and grilled food!
Saturday was our first one to attend of 2013, and it was a sizzler.  High humidity in the upper 90s...but good food and good friends.

I am not certain why I chose black, I was just in the mood.  This TRAVELER'S vest from CHICO'S was the star of the outfit.  Running a close second...a necklace I purchased at Stein Mart last year!

There was one other attendee in black, but mostly my friends brought out their color and crops!

I have friends who prefer to wear a cute maxi to outdoor events in the summer, but none were seen at this party!

What is your favorite style for an outdoor party??

Hydration for Skin...Makes Sense to Me!

Do you want to look like a beauty queen?? Well, maybe not.  But, I do know that the reason many of you come here day after day is that we want to look and feel our best!
Since beginning to blog, I have been privileged to interview several skincare specialists and one of the connecting threads between all is the importance of drinking water.  Drinking water brings no fountain of youth promises...remember nothing stops aging, it is going to happen like it or not.

However, flushing toxins from our bodies and remaining hydrated will give us a healthy, youthful glow.  There are controversies on the web about everything and this topic is one.  Some do not believe drinking water will help your skincare at all.  It just makes sense to me that it would.

I bring you a variety of products for your consideration.  We all have different skin types and different heredity, so you just have to see what works best.  There are excellent skincare products available...and here is one more....HTY GOLD!

They sent me their INTENSIVE BODY PACKAGE which includes body serum and a rich, silky body cream.  Yes, at night you feel all greased up...but when you awake in the morning, your skin does feel incredible...completely hydrated.  It is truly a treat for your body and a way for that "after the spa" feeling day after day.  You would pay this for one spa visit...this will give you the touch of many spa visits.  I do recommend it and I am thoroughly enjoying mine!

Now, I have to go put on my tiara and watch my high school seniors graduate and head off into the world!!

Have a wonderful Saturday everyone...drink lots of water!!!
