Rehearsal Dinner: Texas Style!

Happy New Year, Everyone!  I am still recovering from a very active wedding weekend as Mother of the Groom!  Celebrations are always a great way to begin a New Year!

I thought I would close out this year by taking you to our Texas BBQ Wedding Rehearsal.  It was a very intimate evening in a private home.  My husband’s father had hosted a rehearsal dinner for my husband’s best friend (Mr. G) years ago, so Mr. G wanted to reciprocate and invited us all out to his Lazy G Ranch for a down home country cookout.  It was an amazing evening from grilled chicken smoked in his secret sauce to a Smores bar around a fire pit.

Magazine-worthy decorations and spicy cooking were perfect for a cold, Texas night and we really had a wonderful time.  The menu also included jalapeno poppers and Texas Pecan coffee.  For the poppers, just take hold of your jalapenos with rubber gloves, cut in half, take out the seeds in the middle.  Fill with cream cheese, and wrap with bacon strips.  Cook at 425 degrees until bacon is crisp…yum!
I told you HERE I was going to be wearing Soft Surroundings all weekend.  This sweater was the western chic style I was seeking and I really loved it with my Coldwater Creek leggings and boots.  I hope you enjoy the pictures ; and I hope your celebrations this holiday season have been joyous.  I will return with some of the wedding soon!!
My favorite outfit of the evening,
besides the bride (of course). Love the Skirt!

Fashion Resolution: Resolve to Always Look Your Best!

This is my last fashion resolution for the week…next week, I look forward to discussing personal resolutions which include annual goals for this blog!!
Today, I just want to encourage you to take time and look your best no matter where you are headed.  I have written before about the importance of fixing up for running errands.  Today, I want to encourage you to always look great for your significant other and take time to date!!  Despite all the chaos around us this month, Mr. B and I have made it to a Spurs NBA Game and to the opening day of Les Miserables.

This is one outfit I enjoyed when we were out and about.  It includes a tunic blouse from Lane Bryant with a touch of bling on the collar, and a Chicos Travelers pants and jacket…very comfortable for sitting in stands or theaters.
I hope all of you have a wonderful New Year’s weekend and ring in 2013 with laughter and joy.
This lovely couple…my son and his high school and college sweetheart…will be wed on Sunday, so the weekend is packed.  I will return next week, hopefully, with some fun pictures and new posts.  I look forward to seeing you then.
Happy New Year!

Fashion Resolution: Experiment With Beauty Products

Jasmina Aganovic

Another suggestion for a Fashion Resolution might pertain to our beauty routines and chosen products.  There are so many great lines available, I encourage you to do your homework and see what is best for the after 50 skin.   I would like to recommend one line, Bona Clara.  Founded by a young, intelligent woman, Jasmina Aganovic, the line of age specific beauty products is designed to enhance all stages of a woman’s life.  Jasmina was willing to answer a few questions for the over50feeling40 audience about her unique line:

1. Please tell us a little bit about yourself!
I am 25, live in Boston, and my parents and younger brother all live in South Florida where I grew up!

2.  How did you happen to enter into the beauty industry and how old were you?
I was always passionate about the beauty industry... always grabbing the latest Allure. I actually didn’t consider this as a career choice until my junior year of college. I was put on a really interesting project that sparked my interest!

3.  Tell me about your strategy for developing product for different ages...how did that come about and how is it working?
The idea started when I was doing some research during my undergrad years. I was working with antibiotic formulations and using human skin as a test model. My results varied so dramatically by age that it planted the first seeds of: "why aren't more brands talking about this?" I worked in the beauty industry for a couple years after graduation, and that was where I saw how hungry for information the typical beauty consumer is. I saw a huge place for an educational beauty brand in the market. Our goal from the beginning has been to teach women about the changing needs of the skin by age.

4. Some women believe that skincare is completely hereditary and it does not matter what they do...they will age and look as mom and grandma did...please address that type of thinking.
I smile when I read things like this. Genetics are of course important and play a role (we are all envious of the woman with miraculous genes)... but they are not an excuse for helplessness! That mentality is the same thing as assuming that women with nice thick hair are the only ones that should bother styling it (or doing anything at all!). When it comes to skin, there are many things that we can do to enhance the appearance of our skin and overall quality of our lives. Wrinkles, for example, while caused by decrease in collagen and elastin, can also be caused due to dehydration. A great moisturizer can fix that! Another example: Our skin regenerates slower as we move from our 30s to 40s meaning that it looks a bit duller - a great exfoliant can solve that and give you back a rosy glow!

5.  Some women believe cheaper products work just as well as more expensive ones...please address those ladies.
There is no rule of thumb here, unfortunately because everyone’s skin has different needs, complexities, etc. What I can say, however, is that many companies that produce lower price point products use lower grade essential oils and actives. Furthermore, they use cheaper preservatives like parabens that have been a bit controversial as of late.

6.  Why is your line better than anything else on the market?
Bona Clara is a line of products formulated specifically by age. Not only do we offer high quality luxurious products, but we aim to be an educational brand first and foremost. Majority of the beauty brands out there choose an ingredient and build a story and marketing campaign around it. This cycle is repeated for every brand and ever product launch. We take a different approach, we start with the biological needs of the skin, and build potent formulations with tried and true ingredients that fulfill all of those needs.

7.  Finally, just tell us the top three things women over 50 should do to age gracefully?

Hydrate! Look to hydrate the skin from every step in your routine (ie: opt for a creamy cleanser). The moisture barrier starts to breakdown in the 50s, making moisture retention one of the biggest challenges.
Gently Exfoliate! Any exfoliants should be small and gentle on the skin. This is because the skin is more fragile and prone to micro tears. Opt for exfoliants with small granules and high amounts of citrus enzymes, which can work away at dull skin without too much rubbing.
Smile!  Makes everyone look 10 years younger  :)

Some of you know how much I love her last words…Smiling cures so much!!  I hope you have a great Thursday, everyone.

Fashion Resolution: Fun With Color and Prints!

Hello, everyone…I hope you are staying warm, safe, and joyful on this day after Christmas!  We had a wonderful family time and now we are on the fast pace toward our son’s wedding this weekend!
My awesome children!
In thinking about a New Year, I thought I would mention setting some fashion resolutions for your wardrobe. 2013 could be a really fun year and time to step out of your comfort zone.  I started using my Parisian Chic 2013 Weekly Planner, written by Ines de la Fressange and Sophie Gachet (which fits nicely in my purse!).  They write about New Year’s Eve:

*And, if you’re ever going to dare to wear that kooky dress, now’s the time, because none of your friends will remember anything in the morning!

Well, maybe we should push ourselves to go a little farther this year with color and prints on more than just New Year’s Eve... and when all are sober around us!   Goodwill is the place to begin….you can go out of your box and not spend vast amounts of dollars doing so.  If you like it….add it to the wardrobe….if it is a one- time look…re-donate it and treasure hunt at Goodwill once again.

As I was purchasing this vibrant red blouse, a woman looked over from another counter and said, “Oh, I almost bought that!  I really liked it, but just did not have the courage to wear it!”  She appeared to be middle aged, so I gave her my card and encouraged her to join in the fun for 2013!!
Remember, now is the time when people clean out the closets to make end- of- year- donations….Goodwill’s are well stocked!!
Where would I wear this?  I think it is perfect for entertaining at home…a fun dinner party with friends or even lunch on our cultural Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio!

I also picked up this colorful tunic which I know I will wear for spring and teaching summer school!!
It’s time for some fashion fun and Goodwill is a treasure-chest waiting to open!  Would anyone like to share fashion resolutions with us??

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Stocking Stuffers, Grumpy Shoppers, and One Great Smile!

Oh my goodness, it’s a jungle out there!!  The traffic is crazy with shoppers and party goers and revelers….and more!  Two ladies almost wiped me out in the Kohls parking lot and then when I got inside I was met with the grumpy, the irritable, and the down- right nasty.   I really do not understand why people feel as though being rude will help them get home any faster.
Then, while standing in line, I began to focus on one checker.  She was smiling and greeting customers at her counter with a hand shake.  Merry Christmas…immediately diffused the grumpy at that counter.  One attempted to complain to her and she just smiled and said, “We are happy to get you accommodated sir!”
Her attitude was contagious and you could tell a distinct difference on her side of the checkout area as opposed to the other side where tired checkers were ready to spar with any customer over the slightest complaint.  I wish I could’ve shot a video…she was schooling everyone else!
So, be careful if you have last minute details to attend to and keep smiling…it makes a huge difference!
Monogrammed Paper Napkins for Casual Entertaining
Here are my favorite treasures from the stocking stuffer shopping trip!  Both my daughter and soon-to-be daughter-in-law are setting up new households, so I found these fun, inexpensive items at Tuesday Morning, where Gigi sent me!  I could have gone really crazy there…so many ideas at reasonable prices.
Rubber Gloves and Scrub Brush for the Fashionistas' Kitchen!!
Happy Saturday, everyone…just three days until Christmas!
Gigi knows all the fun places to shop...including Chicos, where she found
this great leopard tunic sweater.  I love it!!

The Power of Traditions....With A Little Denim & Velvet On The Side

It’s almost Friday before Christmas and our house is buzzing like it hasn’t since my children were young.  We are all together this year with the anticipation of a holiday wedding and our first grandchild coming in early 2013.

I am attempting to make it a special Christmas, but with all that has been going on, I thought, “Well, they are all older now.  We’re holding the big celebration on Christmas Eve.  I don’t think I will fill the stockings.”  Seemed reasonable to me…but when I mentioned it to my pregnant, 26 year old daughter, she basically freaked out!!  She wanted her husband for his first Christmas in our house to experience the entire traditional package from stockings to the special breakfast I have always made for them  (Monkey bread and applewood bacon!)
I heard on the radio this morning about a study which revealed Americans look more forward to the traditions than the gifts.  That made sense to me, so after much consideration….I am out to shop for STOCKING STUFFERS for five over-twenty-somethings!!

Here is a look I have enjoyed for a few years….velvet and denim…with a little bling on the side!  Gives a nice holiday touch while doing the last minute shopping.  So, ladies, how about those stocking stuffer ideas…bring your best…remember, they are adults!

Have a Fabulous Friday!!

This Just Might Be Your Miracle...

There are those of us over 50 who struggle for the perfect Christmas gift….especially for a significant other.  But, I have an idea which might be a huge surprise and big blessing.  It is specifically for those who are suffering from thinning hair or hair loss.
Fibond really surprised me, because it honestly looks too good to be true.  But, I researched thoroughly and it appears to be the real deal.   I have not however tried it, but I do believe there is enough encouraging information here, it is worth your time to check it out.  It just might put a smile on the face of that loved one who has been depressed over hair loss…and,of course, that might also be you!
Imagine using Fibond just for the next high school graduation!!  Right?    Here are some facts straight from their website and if you go to the website, you can find video testimonies HERE!

Before......
After...in a manner of minutes!
Fibond is not a paint or a shoe polish product like those developed in the 80's. It's an amazing breakthrough product for men and women that suffer from hair loss. It has changed many lives and given back confidence to thousands of men and women.
Fibond is not processed animal fur or some unnatural chemical fiber made up in a lab. Its hair building fibers are natural ones that bind to your own hair to instantly make it look thicker and fuller. Made of all plant resin, these fibers act in a similar way to the keratin compound that is human hair.
Fibond fiber technology was carefully formulated over many years to statically charge the plant resin, creating a strong bond that is totally undetectable and won't come off in rain, wind or perspiration. It's completely undetectable even if someone is just inches from your hair.
Fibond instantly bonds to your hair, giving you a natural looking thick and full head of hair until you shampoo. It's safe to use with other hair products and works for both men and women.
Fibond is recommended by doctors everywhere because it is completely natural and safe, unlike other methods like hair transplants that can be painful, noticeable and dangerous. If you're worried about hair loss and balding, Fibond will change the way you look and feel about your hair.

I believe this could be important information to some of you and I hope it helps!  Now, please, on Thursday visit the other bloggers from Katie's Favorite Things Blog Hop!!
