Why Don't I Lose Weight?

Regular readers of this blog know I have changed to a healthy lifestyle of eating and exercising.  While I know I have lost inches since I began last spring, I also know that I have only dropped about 8-10 pounds, depending on the day I weigh.  I have been very frustrated as I walk and walk, and eat mostly healthy foods as to why the weight is not coming off a little faster.
After I first posed this question, Kathleen Morrison sent me her book called Weight Loss In Steps....which directly answers the questions as to why all of us fabulous over 50 women lose weight at a much slower pace.
At least, I walk and will keep it going.  She recommends walking!
This little 28-page book just might be the most power-packed eating plan to come along.  I say "just might be" because I have not tested it yet....but I plan to.  It does require some courageous decisions about eating.  I have to be realistic...in my immediate future is hosting a wedding shower, Thanksgiving, Christmas, hosting a rehearsal dinner and then a family wedding...all before the clock ticks 2013.  (But, because of reading her book, I am going to load up on celery for all of these events.  I had no idea the power of celery until this book...I thought it just gave you something to crunch during a diet.  Celery has amazing health benefits and, Kat writes, should be eaten every day!)
The beauty I find on my walks make it a vital part of my day!
So, in January, I am going to give her plan a try.  Just to drop kick  me into some healthier eating decisions.  My desire for weight loss is mostly because I still need to keep blood test results going the right direction and get out of potential heart disease, Alzheimer's Disease, and osteoporosis trouble.  She may be right and most of the secret lies in salt and sugar...two areas that will be tough for me.

You can check out Kathleen's Blog: Wrapped Beautifully; her FACEBOOK page; or order the book from Amazon.

  1. I'm surprised at how salt has slowly decreased in my diet.....I'm a confessing saltaholic! I do ok on sugar too.....not total abstention , but a definite monitoring and "only if I REALLY want it" which, for me, is pretty infrequent. Pizza is my downfall....and bread! Glorious bread!!!!! So I understand your dilemma. After being in the fitness and weight loss industry for many years, I've come to the conclusion that weight loss isn't a solution but a symptom....of either a healthy or unhealthy diet and lifestyle. For example, if your blood numbers come down, it's not the weight loss per se, it's the new healthy habits you adopted. I think if we would take the emphasis off weight loss and put it on healthy habits, that would be more helpful. It would also mean that I have to accept that I'm not meant to be a size 6!! :). You've hit on something I feel very strongly about! Thanks!!! Btw, you've never looked better! You look slim, taut, and glowing! It doesn't get better than that!!!! Hugs gorgeous!! Serene

  2. looking at your photo i think you look great! you look slim!

i've always been struggling with my weight.
have a great day and i just loved your blog!!~

  3. There is always something new about nutrition.
    Great to know.
You are very wise, lose weight, but enjoy life.

  4. Weight struggles have been with me for years. I finally had to pretty much convince myself that I didn't like a lot of foods. It helps but I do crash and burn on pizza and anything starch! Thanks for stopping by and keep up the struggle. When you are doing it for yourself the rewards outweigh the agony!

  5. Please keep us posted about how you do in trying to cut back on salt and sugar in 2013. I probably need to do this as well so maybe you can inspire me. I would add weight training to your walking regimen. Weight training will build muscle, which will speed up metabolism. Keep it in mind! XO, Jill

  6. I'm going to check this out-thanks Pam!!
My docotor says the numbers i need to be the most concerned about aren't on my scale--it's my sugars, cholesterol and such. As long as they are good she isn't too concerned about how much i weigh at this point.

  7. I have a lot of little tricks I use to keep my hunger at bay. Instead of using cream in my coffee I use a little vanilla protein shake. The protein helps keep my hunger at bay in the morning. I never eat at fast food restaurants, try not to eat after 6pm, and I walk a few miles a day. I eat a healthy diet but don't place any restrictions on myself. I can honestly say I weigh less now at 52, than I did when I was 20. It can be done.

  8. You have a great blog! I will be looking for this booklet! I have enjoyed my visit and am your newest follower,

  9. The best way to lose weight is to eat protien, salad wiith no dressing and fresh fruit. That is it. Then find something healthy to cheat with such as dark chocolate with less than 4 grams of sugar. Anything that has more than 4 grams of sugar is a no. Then find a fun activity. Something you want to excel doing. Fencing, horseback riding, ballet, anything that gets you out of a chair and FOCUSED to the point that you do not even think about food. Yeah right, I love ballet but still constantly think about food. It is just finding ways that work for you personally and like you I read everything I can get my hands on and experiment experiment experiment.

  10. What a coincidence to come across your post as a friend and I were just talking this AM about weight, how it changes and how blinking hard it is to take off a few pounds. even with exercise and reasonable good eating habits. I'll check out the book.

  11. First of all throw away your scale. Seven years ago, I maxed my weight. Over 5 years I lost weight by, eating my main meal at lunch and not eating it all. For dinner, I finished my lunch or had a bowl of cereal. I ate whatever I wanted, just much smaller portions. I also began to swim 5-7 times a week. We had a pool, so it was convenient. I know what I started out at, but over the next 5 years I lost 60 lbs. I built muscle mass, which I didn't even notice until I saw a picture of myself.
So, anyways, the point is you are probably changing fat mass for muscle mass. Don't give up, you can do it. And I started this when I was 52.
Keep at it, you look great, and I love your blog. Blessings Paula

  12. I watch my portions, I exercise, I don't lose weight...menopause...no thyroid...my meds....UGH, so many things working against my will and hard work. LOL Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things hop xo P.S. did you enter my latest giveaway?

  13. I love celery, but with cream cheese or peanut butter. You are so lovely, but I understand wanting to live a more healthy lifestyle. I actually struggle with losing too much weight. I think we all have our magic goal weight, whether it's adding or losing the pounds, and getting there seems like walking across a desert. I'll be following your progress and tips with great interest.

    Please pass the celery!

  14. I used to always fail in my diet plans until I considered hypnotherapy to help me in my weight loss goals. People may not be aware of this alternative method but it really worked for me.

  15. Check out the book "Wheat Belly". Genetically modified foods are making us fat and killing us. Also, read up on the value of iodine to change your body composition and the importance of vitamin D as a hormone and a vitamin to regulate your systems. Eat raw and natural foods as much as possible. Raw vegan lifestyles have much to offer. Take good care of your teeth and get rid of your root canals as they are poisonous to the body. True health is possible with some changes. Bless you.

  16. I switched to vegan diet to lose weight for our manila to boracay flights . I t worked for me and I’m still pursuing my diet plan..
