Leather Garments: Are Fakes OK? And Winner Announced!

Since I became a blogger, I love to open my email!  What will over50feeling40 have for me today?  Whether it is a new advertiser or reader
request, I always find something there of interest.  One reader  wondered, “Is it acceptable to wear fake
leathers and furs….or does that cheapen our style?”
Boots:  Ross
Gloves: Stein Mart
Great Question!  Personally,
I believe it is acceptable to wear fakes in order to save money as long as the
fakes are good ones! There is no material more beautiful than a soft, buttery authentic leather. But for some of us, the purchase doesn’t come easy.   I have always heard
that the way federal agents find counterfeit money is to study the
original.   By doing that, they are more
likely to find the fakes.  That is why I
study original leathers….then I find it easier to shop for fakes…the more authentic
they look, the better.   I only own a
couple of authentic leather garments…the others are the more affordable
fakes.   Living in a warmer climate also
makes it cost effective to buy the fakes, because we do not get to wear
leather jackets and skirts that often.  I
have not had success in thrift stores with leather…the ones I have found are
either in despicable shape or made for really tiny people.
Today’s outfit is one way I mimic the look, but please know
there are some really cheap fakes out there and they can look horrendous…shop
with care and remember….study the originals in order to know how to shop for
fakes!

  1. I wouldn't have guessed right, just looking at the photos. You look fantastic.

I did score a leather skirt at GoodWill that I'm excited to wear now that the weather's turned cool, or actually, downright nasty 🙁

  2. Oh my, Pam – you look a million dollars!!!!!!! Now THAT'S how to wear leather – you've got it just right by mixing brown with black. And I'm all for fake if it's a good faux leather in a good style, I've just bought myself my first black leather jacket (fake) – I've spent years searching for the perfect one! I can't get over how you're rocking this look!!!

  3. I've seen some pretty darn good looking fake leathers lately, so I say if it looks good and feels good, go for it! The jacket is a nice fit on you.

  4. I think fake is fine, epsecially when it's an accessory. Plus, I've seen so many awful boots made of cheaply tanned leather, the material doesn't seem to be the deciding factor when it comes to whether a product looks good or not. A lot of times I pick up bags at Forever21 and go "Are they using real leather now??" The bags even smell like leather!

  5. I have very few leather garments and they are all real leather but I have no problem with fakes. it's just that i'm not into leather so much. but i agree with you if it's fake it has to be the best quality!Have a great week!

  6. Pam, you look fabulous! No one pays attention to the details quite like you do….you always look meticulously put together and it's impressive and gorgeous! Regarding leather, I almost never wear faux leather anything. I don't see anything wrong with it, but I just have this thing about the real thing. I don't even wear fake fur (ha ha, I actually have NO fur right now!!).

  7. I think you're radiant in your faux leather! I'm with TNMA in this arena. Thank you so much! I can't believe that I have these beautiful bracelets to look forward to. Will be sending my email ASAP.

  8. You look beautiful as always. I do wear some faux leathers; but I have been fortunate enough to find some lovely authentic leathers too, at thrift stores.

Faux or real…'leather' is such a beautiful fall essential.

  9. I love your outfit, you look great!! I really like your style!

Real leather and fur is a big, big NoGo for me – I don't want to be responsible for the killing of animals and wear them! This thought is horrible to me! And I think it is never ever it style or chic to wear dead animals!
