Oh, My Aching Feet!

Progress Report On My New Healthy Lifestyle:

I ended summer walking every day and with my eating under control, but I have to admit the last two days have been tough.  Upon entering my second week of teaching, the work hours got much longer, more junk food was available, and fatigued, my  self- control hit a wall and shattered.
But, it has only been two days, so I plan to get back at it on Wednesday.   During the end of summer, I faced all kinds of obstacles with my walking.

A coyote in the neighborhood...acting funny!

I was charged by two big bucks and a doe  (so sorry there is no video!)

My new very early morning hours have me walking in deep darkness, and it is hard to see obstacles.

Finally, my feet and one knee began to throb with pain for days.  My husband, who has become an avid runner, quietly said….YOU NEED NEW SHOES!  I am someone who loves to shop and purchase new clothes…but not for exercising.  I do not get the point of having expensive workout clothes…I would rather spend it on REAL clothes!  I confess I also felt that way about shoes.  But, walking on concrete hills quickly wore them down.

Mr. B sent me to the NEW BALANCE STORE.  There I entered a cloud of nostalgia where shoe salespeople cared about waiting on you, measuring your feet, and bringing you scores of shoes…as it was when I was young and SERVICE was important in retail.
They placed me on a treadmill and watched me walk….put my feet on an infrared gadget to see when I put the pressure the most when I walk…then made recommendations based on my level of exercise.  It was great and I felt like I was walking on a cloud!!  More than a difference…Mr. B was right!  Service is still the best asset in retail!   I was actually informed that I would need new shoes every six to eight months and they showed me how to tell when the shoe was breaking down.

For now, no more knee pain and my feet feel much better….tomorrow, I am  on the ROAD again with a few regrets for eating those cookies and one piece of pizza…oh, yes, and the breakfast taco!

Thank you, NEW BALANCE!!

  1. Think you better take a long a big stick to fend off all the wild animals!! :-D Glad you made your feet happy again.

  2. I cheer your new walking shoes, Pam - I think you made a brilliant move! Happy, safe walking : >

  3. Yeah for new shoes! I know that I am in the market for a new pair and I'm impressed by the analysis NB has done. I'm wondering if walking with a whistle might not keep the wild life at bay. Happy walking and sticking with your plan.

  4. Good shoes are absolutely imperative if you're going to walk regularly. There are lots of ways to economize on our wardrobes but this is one area where spending the money is well worth it. I'm really impressed by the service and analysis you received at the New Balance store!

  5. Pam
I live north of San Antonio and get up at 4:30 am to get my run done before I head for work in San Antonio. Yes it is dark and I carry a flashlight with me. And at times I've heard coyotes as our subdivision is surrounded by a ranch. I too have a long day -- leave at 7:00 am and return home around 5:45 - 6:00 pm. I definitely understand long days. So whenever you feel that you are the only one up early to exercise, remember there are many others doing the same thing.

  6. I am also trying to walk for exercise and being the same age as you, experience the same aching joints, but will keep going as it is worth the effort! Good to know I am not alone.

  7. Wanted to add I live in South Africa and due to safety reasons have to walk on a treadmill, but imagine myself walking along the beautiful S A coastline with a map, blogging about it as I go along

  8. I feel your determination and know you will be back to your healthy lifestyle once again. I'm going to have to check out the New Balance shoes. I'm in need of a new pair.

  9. I love New Balance shoes and second that they do wear out! I am joining you with your daily walking determination although mine is going to include a dog.

  10. Once you know what your foot fit issues are it's easy to peruse the discount racks and spot shoes that address your issue. I'm a pronator and I look for soles with different material at the arch/heel, they put different density material there and it supports your foot/leg as you strike. Note the style name on the box and when you need new ones google around to see if anybody has them for sale.

My workplace doesn't have a lot of snacks around, we'd have mice in a heartbeat, but I pack my snacks and stick to them to avoid hitting the vending machines in weak moments.

  11. Your post and the comments are inspiring. Early morning blogging has taken me away from my A.M. walks. I live in lower Manhattan
and used to walk along Battery Park where I coud wink at the Statue of Liberty. (Give me your tired . . .) I am going to begin again knowing others across the country and the world are walking with me. I may even get new shoes!

  12. I'm looking forward to starting walking again this fall. I am going to check around locally to see if we have anything like the New Balalnce store here!!

  13. I need to get back to bike riding. Walking puts a lot of strain on my knees and biking is much easier on them. I had a heck of a time finding shoes that worked for me for walking. Oddly enough the ones that worked best for me were the Keen Venice shoes. I tried NB, Nike, Reebok, and others and had no luck. I am glad you found the right shoes for you.
It is a challenge to find time to walk when you work. I used to go right after work. I found that even though I was so mentally fatigued the walk would unwind me and make it easier to sleep.
    Good luck!

  14. Nice shoes! (And this reminds me that both my pairs of walking shoes are very very old and very very worn... but it's so much more fun to shop for heels!)

  15. I have been dealing with feet problems for over a year now and they are FINALLY starting to get better, so I'm very glad you did something early on! It looks like you have super high arches just like me, so I would also recommend finding an arch support that works for you.

    Take care :)

  16. NB are my favorite. Wish we had one of those store. I would love to get 'evaluated'.

  17. Pam i am with you on spending money on not cute items, but i am with the husband on this one
you have to have good walking shoes and replace them often
    sad, but true!

  18. I am totally motivated by new [cute] exercise clothes, new exercise music and new exercise shoes. Especially new exercise music.

Thanks so much for joining in our conversation today! I appreciate your time and love hearing from you!
