Signs of Summer 2012

Maybe in my past, the Frappuccino sign would have drawn me in…but, as Donna Summer once sang…I’ve Got a New Attitude!
My summer is more defined by water and green tea…unsweet, of course.  A student gifted me a Starbuck’s card so I can drink their green tea for a little while.
Also, the only shopping I am doing is sponsored shopping at Goodwill.  I am really trying to put any sale shopping on hold for now (at least a month) until I can get my body into better shape and fit into the clothes I bought last year when I was lighter.  I am slowly going the other direction now....progress, baby steps!

I told my husband that I wanted to get moving more and he suggested I wear a clicker and see how active I am.  He said that he imagined I walked about 6,000 steps a day.  His personal goal is between 17,000 and 20,000 a day.  He has a very slim male friend who walks that amount every day.  So today was the first day for the clicker, and I blew my husband away by doubling the amount.  I will say that I did not teach today and it will be harder to move that much on days when I work. Mr. B is challenging me to just walk one step more every day and build on my progress so that I can “up my game.”  Today, I did things like park far away from the stores where I was running errands, and walk down to the mail box.  It was not as hard to reach that number as I thought it would be…of course it included my morning walk in the neighborhood!
These are the signs of my summer.  What signs represent yours??  Happy Saturday all!!

New Books For Those Who Love Celebrating Style!

I am so excited to tell you that Ines de la Fressange is releasing a 2013 Parisian Chic Planner on July 10th!  I just reserved my copy on Amazon.  Here is what the book description from Amazon says:

"Ines de la Fressange shares fifty-two new secrets in this elegant and humorous weekly planner that is the chicest way to organize your schedule in style. Following up on the success of their New York Times best seller Parisian Chic: A Style Guide by Ines de la Fressange, the same author duo has teamed up to write a year’s worth of weekly fashion tips in this new daily planner. Ines de la Fressange shares fresh style and beauty tips, as well as her light-hearted guidelines for enjoying life to the fullest. From January through December, she offers specific pointers on how to dress like a Parisian—including everything from how to add pizzazz to a simple jeans-and-t-shirt uniform to what to wear on New Year’s Eve—and no-nonsense do’s and don’ts that will have you smiling and looking your best throughout the year. This weekly planner is an elegant accessory in itself, featuring a deep red faux leather cover with gold foil stamp, rounded edges, a ribbon page marker for easy place holding, creamy offset aquarelle paper, four-color printing, charming drawings by Ines, and an address book. This is the must-have engagement calendar for any woman who wants to add a touch of Paris to her handbag and to stay on top of her oh-so-chic lifestyle."
I make sure I carry a hard-copy planner every year.  I just have never warmed up to computer or I Phone planners.  So, I am really looking forward to this one!  For all of you Parisian Chic fans…check it out!

Also, popular professional style blogger, Sally McGraw has just published a book and can be found here.  Sally is one of the best at communicating the mess

Have a wonderful Friday and Happy Reading!

My Summer Focus: Health Watch

Last night I went to a lecture about the power of eating vegetables and fruits.  Ok, I know this is something we are told our whole lives, but listening to the actual research and statistics of the difference that diet really makes was sobering.

Dr. Richard DuBois, the speaker, is a board certified specialist of infectious diseases from Atlanta, GA…he has been practicing there for over 44 years.  He has been included in the list of Best Doctors in America every year since 1994 and was chosen by his medical colleagues as their “Physician of Choice” for life threatening infections and HIV.

I guess the good thing about being a Baby Boomer is the fact that our mantra,“we don’t want to age,” has prompted so much research and testing by many industries.  Some his statements which really struck me were

*Sixty six per cent of cancers are diet related
*The majority of problems with fatigue are due mostly to mitochondrial DNA damage (he explained this)
*The largest deficiency for women over 60 is Vitamin D, and America has more rickets than we have ever had due to lack of Vitamin D
*The most important supplements to take are Vitamin D3 and B12.
*Most heart attacks occur after eating a high fat meal
*One of the most dangerous problems within our bodies are due to chronic silent inflammation
*There are forty new cases of Alzheimer’s in the US per hour

The research had everyone talking
Needless to say, it was a sobering talk.  My husband and I are finally (I guess it is never too late) looking at making big changes in diet, exercise, and choice of supplements. I think we all know that fruits and veggies are important, but statistics of how important they really are got my attention. Like I said, this is the summer for focusing on health.  Baby steps and progress!
Now, make sure you eat fruits and veggies today, and look over the other blogs from KATIE'S BLOG HOP!

Fashion News and Views

I cannot believe we are already approaching mid-week and even coming upon July 4th…the summer is moving right along.  There are several stories which have caught my eye lately, so I thought I would share with you random headlines from the news you might have missed.
No, this photo is not from the Marshalls television commercial!  Dallas actually has a boutique on wheels!!  I would like to thank Donna, an over50feeling40 reader, for sending the link!!

One of our fabulous local ladies, Pamela Taylor, is turning Dress for Success in SA into an even bigger success!

No eating disorder scare for me!
There are just too many Mexican Food restaurants in SA!!
Apparently, the over 50- crowd has problems with eating disorders…here are two links to that story….

Finally, as you begin to shop with fall in mind, remember the Pantones Fall 2012 Colors…there are some beauties here and several of my favorites.  The Pantone website has fun interviews with designers, stylists, and artists.  It is informative to spend some time there!!  For example, here are Nicole Miller's thoughts on the fall colors!

That's all for now!  Hope you enjoyed the update!

Changing Roles!

This month last year I was Mother of the Beautiful Bride, and now I am Mother of the Handsome Groom!!  This past weekend my eldest son got down on one knee and asked his girlfriend of five years to be his wife…ahhhhhhh!  They went to high school together….college together….and now they will start a new life…together.
Yes, there were spies!!
I love her mom (a reader of this blog) and her whole family, so what better way to start than to all go look at a wedding venue.  As I showed you last year, San Antonio has some fabulous wedding venues, in the city and throughout the neighboring Texas Hill Country.  We went to the beautiful LOST MISSION.

It was beautiful with old San Antonio charm, hill country setting, and one venue with a charming chapel and substantial party room.  I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the pictures…maybe they will let me go dress shopping with them, and I can show you the rejects…have to protect the winning dress!!  One venue down and many to go!

We are  so excited to welcome this sweet beautiful young lady into our family!

Mother of the Bride and Bride!
Have a Happy Tuesday, everyone!  Live it with JOY!!

Summer Trend Savings...Of Course at Goodwill!

Trends…I know from reading other blogs, some of you like following trends, some of you hate it, and some you just like to use those guidelines from season to season as a way to update your wardrobe.  Where ever you fall in those groups, one thing is for sure, you do not have to spend a lot of money to follow trends from season to season.  With a few fashion magazines, some time for shopping fun, and Goodwill, you have all that is needed to follow the trends!
Among the popular trends for this season, magazines have featured lots and lots of bright colors; tuxedo jackets with black and white foundations; polka dots; and colored denim including red, cobalt blue, and lime green.  These were the trends on my list as I headed out to Goodwill, and I found everything!  This is a fun treasure hunt I look forward to and I am always amazed at the money I can save!

I think Not!!  In fact, the studded flats I purchased at Goodwill were brand new, so comfortable and I wear them

See what you think….how did I do?  Are you keeping up with the trends this summer?  If not…. (for lack of funds)… you might try Goodwill!!
