Tis the Season of Bling!

Sequined Cami, Velvet Blazer, & Skirt: Lane Bryant
Spanx Tights: Nordstroms
Aerosole T Strap Heels: Marshalls

A day dedicated to sequins?? How much fun is that! I am pleased to join with the ladies of Everything Just So and The Rich Life On A Budget to bring out the sequins even though mine are a bit understated!

This past Tuesday night, I sat in on a phone chat with Deborah Boland and JoJami Tyler (the Glam Gals) from Fabulous After 40 about holiday dressing for women over 40. It was interesting to sit and listen to them give their counsel and also answer questions from 16 of their followers. I will confess that after listening for an hour, I had to get off the phone. But, one thing, they said after a visiting the mall they were overwhelmed with how much sparkle and shine was displayed for the holidays. “I haven’t seen this many sequins and satin since the 1980s,”said Boland. “Don’t be afraid to pick the place you want to accent and put your sparkle there!”

Sequined Bag: Thrifted
Bling Bracelet: Kohls

I enjoyed listening in on the conversation but , according to these ladies, today’s outfit for me is totally wrong! They said that we should avoid wearing black at all costs, because it does not flatter our skin. With this idea in mind, I have added more neutrals to my jackets over the last three years…browns, olive greens, navy blue and greys. But, I still love black. This velvet jacket is about three years old and I have not worn it very much…so I love an opportunity to put it on!!

They also said that this season, the form fitted, pencil skirt style is in on dresses and skirts, and the skirts with volume are out. In or out….I do like the skirt I am wearing today and feel very confident in it. I also like pencil skirts and believe that this season, there is room for both!!

A few ideas from the call you might want to consider:

1. Satiny, shiny fabrics show every curve and roll and should always be worn with Shapewear.

2. Target sells a version of Spanx, Assets by Susan Blakely, that has a looser (more comfortable) compression and is not as expensive.

3. It is easy to create a holiday look for what you already own…with great accessories…they recommended faux fur collars and shawls; leopard gloves; statement necklaces; and fun tights.

4. They love the current trend of draped dresses. These are “soft, feminine, elegant, and work well with every figure.”

5. These ladies love a Michael Kors gold, open-toed pump for a great holiday shoe

I just listened in as if eavesdropping on a group of women talking in a restaurant about what they will wear for all of the fun holiday parties….and though there were some things said that I might not agree completely with (such as, “nobody makes dresses with sleeves anymore.”), I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and wish I could’ve stuck it out all the way to the end.  Overall, I really like all that these ladies are doing...they are certainly busy and on top of things...working to encourage the over 40 woman...something we can all agree on!!

Now, head on over to JILL or ADRIENNE to see how women wear BLING!!! Then put on your courage and have some fun…….

Now for a special announcement:  As of today, I have been married to Mr. Wonderful for 27 years!! Thank you, Mr. B, for being such an amazing father and husband!  I love you!

Here's Mr. B holding our handsome nephew, Cole, during my daughter's rehearsal dinner!

Boutique Shopping and the ABCs

Today, I want to continue with the ABCs of Christmas Shopping….Avoid Big Crowds, that is, by supporting your local small businesses. This fun boutique is called a giftique…The Bless Your Heart Giftique at Sunset Ridge in San Antonio.  I really enjoyed visiting with the manager, Katy, about their jewelry, shoes, clothes, and fun atmosphere. Please look for those small businesses you can support this holiday season. I find many of them to be more reasonable with prices than we imagine…I think there is a misconception that all small businesses are expensive. Besides, why look like everyone else...be unique and shop boutique!

Also, today and tomorrow, I am bringing out the bling in honor of the holidays.  I will wear the quiet side of bling both days, beginning with this winter white sweater covered in sequins!

Sweater and Blouse: Stein Mart
Pencil Skirt: Dillards
Tights: Kohls

 Bamboo Christmas Flats: Ross

Red Belt: Stein Mart
Bracelet: Premiere Jewelry

I hope everyone has a winter-wonderland-Wednesday!!

Life Age vs. Actual Age

Jacket: Dress Barn Summer Clearance Rack
Orange JNY Sweater: Ross
Skirt and Tights:  Lane Bryant
Boots:  Ross

What is your life age? You know that gap between your actual age and how old you feel. When I turned 50 and had my “wake up” call, I think the age I felt at the time was closer to 60 and 70 and that was how I was dressing at the time!

I am in process of reading a book titled Inspired Design, a collection of essays by Image Consultants and Stylists from around the country. In her chapter, Looking Great at Any Age, Alison Vaughn writes, “Your image depends on how your LIFE AGE works with your personal style. The more the two are in harmony, the more together your image. Your LIFE AGE isn’t just about your chronological age; it includes how you look, act, think, feel and much more. This is the age you want to represent through your personal style. A woman wears her life age like a garment. It says more about her than she could ever say with words.” Now, my life age is really in the 40s…hence the name over50feeling40! I would say that now I have a 10-15 year gap between my age and life age!

Scarf:  Marshalls
Bracelet:  Langford Market

Alison is the founder and CEO of Jackets for Jobs, a nonprofit organization that provides employment etiquette, career skills training and professional clothes to persons seeking employment. Since opening the doors in 2000, the organization has assisted over 10,000 individuals. She has received accolades from Donald Trump, ABC’s The View, NBC’s Today Show, and Oprah’s O Magazine.

What about the rest of you, what do you think your life age is? Does anyone have a larger gap than I do??

Gigi walked in today with the most fabulous Tahari Pants she found at Marshalls....here is a full body look, then a close up of the pattern!

The Nuts and Bolts of Visibility!!

The fellow that owns his own home is always just coming out of a hardware store.

-Kin Hubbard

How true! I did not even walk into a Home Depot or Lowe’s before I was married with the joys of home ownership. But, I still never really enjoyed the experience until I met Sunset Ridge Home and Hardware Store. They have it right…the way to capture men and women and have both desiring to spend time among the nuts and bolts!!

This cozy, intimate hardware store is a go to place for beautiful wedding or Christmas gifts and unique home décor. You might not be looking for the exact washer to solve a plumbing problem…but if you are, find it quickly and then visit the many stations of beautiful décor and kitchenware.

It is one of my favorite VISIBLE small businesses in San Antonio! What is your favorite small business in your town??

Now, for Visible Monday I have pulled out some winter clothes that I do not wear often, because it is COLD HERE! That is big news and made decorating the house for Christmas so much fun!! We are scheduled to have freezing temps at night all week….sorry, to be so overjoyed at something many of you endure often…but for here, this is news and makes us feel like it is that special time of year. I was pondering the other day about how most Christmas songs must have been written by people who live up north, because they set scenes we rarely see in South Texas! Thank you for letting me gush over weather that is so rare for my neck of the woods!

Jones of New York Jacket: Ross, (about 5 years ago)\

Wow, thanks to one of you (a faithful reader) I just found this letter on the Sheyna website:

November 27, 2011
Thank you for visiting us. I am very sorry to let you know that we have decided to close Sheyna. While the team and I have met many wonderful people along the way, and had a terrific time building Sheyna, we have to face the fact that our business is not working out the way we had hoped. We considered keeping it going for a few more months to see if things got better, but that would be postponing the inevitable. And during the holidays, we didn't want to promise orders and have to later refund them and disappoint gift-givers and gift-getters who were counting on us. (Any orders or gift cards you have placed that have not already been fulfilled will be fully refunded within the next day or so.)
Your designs, your comments, your positive feedback, and your business have meant the world to us. Thank you for that.
If you have any questions about an order please email me at md at sheyna dot com.

Acting CEO and First Investor

Sheyna promised me a promotion and then did not notify me of their decision to close after I started the promotion.  So sorry everyone...I have removed the contest from the blog!!

Leggin’ Lovin’ and Small Business Shoppin’

I do love my leggings from Coldwater Creek. I bought them last summer on clearance for $19 and they are the best leggings that I have ever owned! In fact, this whole look is only $30!! The purple top was $7 at Ross a couple of years ago and the fun ballet flats were $3 at one of my favorite local consignment shops, Garment Exchange. I love this type of outfit for shopping, running errands, or going to doctor’s appointments.

I also love the idea of Small Business Saturday which is today! This idea was started two years ago by American Express to call attention to our local small businesses. I watched an interview on CNBC this past week with Edward Gilligan, Vice Chairman of American Express. Here are the highlights:

1. Small businesses are vital to the American economy.

2. Two thirds of all new jobs created in the last twenty years came from small businesses.

3. Small Business Saturday is meant to stimulate the local economy and bring new customers to their doorsteps.

4. Gilligan said, “If we can get people to shop small and help raise the confidence of small businesses, I do believe that over time we will help to create more jobs.”

I really like this idea, so I am going to introduce you to some of our fun small businesses around San Antonio….just every now and then over the next month!! On Visible Monday, join me to find out what is so special about a hardware store!! As I go hunting for these fun little merchants, I will probably wear these leggings…so comfortable!!

In All Circumstances...Give Thanks!

Did you know that beauty can be found in black and white...

And that some flowers flourish on rocks with no soil...

And that wine tastes better from grapes grown during a drought...

May we be thankful for the storms and the droughts…

The thorns as well as the roses…

The leaves that fall from the trees...

And the trials as well as the victories!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I am so thankful for each and every one of you!

Black Friday Blackout!

Wear Black...of course!
Black Jacket:Old Navy
Michael Kors Black T: Stein Mart
Lee Slimming Jeans: Kohls

I’ve come to the conclusion that Black Friday is all about the experience and not the prices. After all, you can find amazing prices online and even after Friday, so it must be the thrill of the chase. We have a family that has camped out for the last two weeks at the front door of Best Buy. They have received a great amount of media attention…in fact, I really believe Best Buy owes them an advertising fee.

Here's the Story:  Families Camp Our for Black Friday

Necklace and ring: Stein Mart
Apt. 9 Bracelet: Kohls

The last time I joined in the madness, about two years ago, I was standing with several hundred of my closest friends at KOHLS, sweating profusely, and wondering WHY? The joy was gone. So, I will not be there this Friday. I have to cook any way, a football game will delay our Thanksgiving one day…my boys are Aggies and I am a Longhorn, so somebody is not going to be happy at dinner!! If the meal comes out perfectly though, we might forget the rivalry.

Brand new Target shoes, tages still on: $1.99 at Goodwill! Yes, I wear them often!

Just in case some of you are curious, here is a link for Black Friday deals….let me know if you have any great stories to tell!http://www.theblackfriday.com/

Off to the grocery store!!

Handbag Heaven

I’ve spent an evening salivating over a pair of boots I saw at the mall…or pouting over an outfit I could not walk away with…but never have I given a second thought to a purse. Until now. Last week I discovered a purse that I just cannot stop thinking about….in fact, the whole line I saw was breathtaking by designer Betty Audish.  She has been creating handbags for ten years from exquisite Spanish-textured leathers.

My favorite!

Betty holds a fashion design degree from CEDIM in Monterrey, Mexico and developed the leather handbag collection in honor of her mother, Ofelia. She says her mother was a timeless, classic lady who was a huge supporter of Betty’s career which actually began in 1988 with clothing design.

Betty's sister helps her dispaly these popular bow clutches.

She does have advice for women entrepreneurs:

1. Do What You Love

2. Make sure from day one you hire bookkeeping services

3. Hire a good service for website design. She likes www.photobiz.com

4. Start small and focus on doing one thing really well

Currently, her favorite design is a crocodile bag she calls “Dulce” inspired by Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In her upcoming spring collection, her favorite is a python bag of matte mint called “Gloria.” In San Antonio, her collections can be found at Julian Gold, 4109 McCullough Ave. 78212.

Betty's Favorites:

Judy - Python
