Foundation #4: Dressing Youthful….for Visible Monday!

“Fairy Tales can come true…they can happen to you…if you’re young at heart…”

Yes, Frank Sinatra sang to me as I wrote this post. This line from the song actually would have been a perfect fit in Tom Hank’s new movie Larry Crowne. Without spoiling it for you, Larry Crowne is reinvented and rejuvenized by a group of college students….kind of like I am each day when I face high school students. It’s a fact spending time with youth will help you to feel young.

But, we are really here to discuss the fourth pillar of my own personal FOUNDATIONAL FIVE
shopping guidelines….Dressing with YOUTHFUL in mind. When I look in the mirror, I make myself find the balance in appropriate age dressing. I look at the piece I am trying on and ask….DOES IT MAKE ME LOOK OLD? DOES IT MAKE ME LOOK TOO MUCH LIKE I AM TRYING TO BE YOUNGER? I want to find the balance and do not want to be accused of being either too young or too old with my style. This week I will turn 58…now I find myself a lot closer to 60 than to 50!! So, my age questions are going to be different from many of yours. I would love to be accused of looking 40…but I do not think I will ever look 30 again…so I am not going for that. What I want?…is for people to be shocked when they find out my age!! Again, please remember this is one of the five questions I now ask when I shop or style a look. Yes, age is a state of mind and the good thing is I DO NOT FEEL 58! I really feel younger and hope to hold on to that for a very long time.  Now, a word about this color…I know I wear it alot!  Someone commented yesterday that the color is drab.  I just happen to love it…mostly because of what it does to my eyes!!  These are my foundational five™… and the colors are ones I select for me…if it is drab to you…then that’s OK…don’t wear it!  I encourage you though to find the colors you love and you think look best on you…the colors which increase your personal confidence.  That is what drab army green does for me…I am always more confident when I wear it!

Yes, there were a few issues
with the camera today!!
I wish you could see
the metallic gold strips
in the cardigan.

You bet I feel visible in this Calvin Klein outfit…it makes for a perfect date outfit with the hubs. I love the sequins on the sweater and the fit of the sweater. I love the cardigan with its touch of sparkly gold stripes on top of my favorite color. I will probably wear the cardigan to work but with a more work appropriate blouse underneath. Look for it restyled this fall! The sparkly sweater and cardigan are Calvin Klein from Marshall’s….and you have seen my Lane Bryant jeggings before. Now hum a little Sinatra and hop on over to Patti’s site and see all of the VISIBLE MONDAY looks!!

  1. Gorgeous. All shiny, flowy chic. Love!

Still drafting my Foundation 5, Pam! I don't know if I'll ever be so streamlined, and so disciplined, that I can satisfy all 5 with EVERY item I buy. But I might be able to use the 5 to style every outfit, though…. You are my role model and inspiration here!

  2. Pam, this is a beautiful outfit and a great post that we can all relate to. I love to feel youthful while still embracing the taste that develops with our age. You do it perfectly. Thanks for participating in Visible Monday.

  3. Pam, you look wonderful in this outfit and I would say it fits all your F5 guidelines.
I would not say that your colors are drab at all. You look like Pam in what you wear and that makes it perfect! You are a wonderful example for all of us and for your students.
I am finding that with retirement, I do miss the interaction I had with other people. You are fortunate to love your work.

  4. I need to SEE Larry Crowne, but we go to the theatre so rarely these days–hard to find films that appeal to our age group. Agree that working with students is bound to help one feel younger–and I find myself watching their style and trying to incorporate small bits of their looks into mine–as a sort of code to them.

I like these colors on you–brings out the beautiful chestnut (?) color of your hair.

I think women our age need to keep pressing the boundaries of what the mainstream considers appropriate for us.

  5. Pam, I actually really like that color! It suits you! And NEVER would I have guessed that you're 58. NEVER!!! From what you've mentioned before, it certainly looks as though you are just improving with age! By the way, have you seen the movie, Young at Heart with Frank Sinatra and Doris Day? It's sooooo sweet! I LOVE him, but to be honest, I'm more drawn to Dean Martin than I am Mr. Sinatra. But they're both WONDERFUL! Oh! And Nat King Cole too!!! Hugs gorgeous! ~Serene

  6. First of all: are you really almost 58?I'd never guessed. Second: I'm agree balance is the key. Know your age, your body, where will you wear that outfit, what you'll doing while…it's complex, but enjoyable. It's the play of fashion. Third: I love to be at your sidebar. Thank you so much Pam 😉

  7. I love this sweater on you, it's super sexy! And I always love sequins, I never get tired of them. I hope you can get the Peridot nail color at the Chanel counter. It's really a beautiful, unusual shade. I can see you wearing it!

  8. Wise choice to go with your own color pallette~those colors look great on you–what others may call the "drab" colors. You look great in brown too, I noticed. I think color, and what looks best on you is one of my foundations. Love, Paula

  9. The cardi seems like a great piece to own and the color is great, I like the senquin tank and the way you wear it,age appropriate but still it gives shine to the outfit. i like how you've pilled the bracellets
