Why Do You Like What You Like???
This oriental jacket is from Nordstrom’s |
Do you understand why you like everything that you like? Why you love some colors and not others? Why you are drawn to certain pieces and not others? Do you understand yourself so well that you know exactly why you are moved toward the style you have?
If you do, then please share your secrets with the rest of us, because sometimes this area of style is truly puzzling. For example, I love Oriental clothing and jewelry. I have absolutely no idea WHY…..I just do. I recently purged my closet of all things Oriental, just because I thought I should go a different direction….then lo and behold, I went and bought something Oriental. I guess I was lonely without any of it…I really wish I had kept the jewelry!!

So, tell us….what are you drawn toward in clothing that you really do not know why you are????
Fun post and a great question. I am drawn to tunics with embroidered fronts. I have several of them. Why?……comfort, and I must admit it reminds me of days gone by. I also buy black v neck t-shirts. I'll add a sparkly necklace, throw on a scarf, or light weight top or just wear it plain. Basic black. got to love it!

This post makes me smile. I do the same thing all the time, shop for things I already own, or am compulsively drawn to. My thing is cardigans. I don't have an excessive amount (yet), but if they are at all a bit different from one I already own I will usually buy them. So J. Crew is killing me because they always find a way to make their cardigans slightly different from season to season and I can't stop buying them! Oh dear.
Great post! I like simple lines, neutrals and sleek silhouettes. I never wear anything boho, ethnic or too flouncy.
This is a fun post. What a great question! I have been rather conservative in my dress, lots of neutrals and tailored things. But I have always been drawn to ethnic and Bohemian prints but afraid to wear them. So years ago, I began to incorporate the color and pattern in my jewelry and accessories. Then I let myself get talked out of the pieces because they were "fashion" jewelry and I purged my jewelry drawer. Oh, what a mistake. Because now here I am buying the same kinds of things again. I need to remember what makes me happy. Thanks for another thought provoking post!
Love that kimono cardigan! FABULOUS!
That's such a great question! I know I like belts because they add color and nip in the waist. I gravitate towards bright colors because they're more cheerful. Although I do wear a LOT of black and I don't know why about that!
You look lovely in oriental designs! Perhaps tha's why?

I tend to gravitate towards neutral colors because I find them easier to style.
What a beautiful jacket! Love the Oriental kimono look for ss'11! Tres chic!

what a great question and here i thought you were going to be so helpful and give the answer, bummer!
it's so weird how that works, i am pink girl and my bff wouldn't touch anything pink, she loves red and i rarely wear it.

I love anything green, well almost everything. I like some bling, and I LOVE your sandals. They are definetly something I would wear. Also I am more into purses than shoes.
I love all things green….guess that's b/c I am a redhead and sometime, somewhere, someone said I should wear green…..so I do! I think most of the time I know/sense what style will look good on me.
Pam~I think I was posting a comment on your blog when blogger went down so this feels a bit like deja-vu, but that is a good question. And even if I decide to get rid of something, if I like it, it comes back. Or I go back to it.
good question, and i'm not quite sure why. i think, like food, it's a comfort thing for me. i tend to reach for things that make me feel good…like leopard, a great pair of jeans, the fluid-ness of maxi skirts…

I always go for pink and skirts.

When I go shopping, I always make a beeline for anything with an animal print: "Voom!" There I am. Oddly, I'm not that comfortable wearing animal prints except in small doses. So I usually wind up walking away, and I'm not sure why they attract me so much.
Good question! I am attracted to anything that is really different and edgy (if affordable), but only if it looks good on me. I am short and a bit chubbier, but I love wrap anything….dresses, blouses. I am mostly a purse and shoe girl cause with my current weight I am sticking more to monotones, but am drawn to pink, lavender, and girly-girl this year. I have no idea why. I think I am trying to embrace my curves this year no matter what.
at 49 i am starting to get a really good hold on this one. it has taken a lot of introspection, and doing my best to engage both left and right brain – the logical/analytical as well as the creative, free-flowing side.
as style tends to be more 'creative', i'm coming to the conclusion that anything you can do that engages your analytical side(make lists, compare/contrast, analyze wardrobe by activity/weather/occupation/style type) will really help by bring unknown elements to consciousness, and getting your whole brain involved (better than half a brain!).
this is so interesting to me, as it gets at personal style as opposed to blindly following fashion. good question! steph
